Gen VII: Pokemon Sun and Moon Discussion MKII

So after all of these new Pokemon being focused on competitive viability, the Pokemon with an excellent typing offensively and defensively gets shafted with an absolutely trash ability that's NEW. All it needed was an immunity smh.

Unless Game Freak expects some kind of weird Passho Berry set, or if it has massive defenses, I can't see that working at all.

It's a castle. Of course it will have good defenses. And unlike bastion, it doesnt have a 4x weakness thats super common. Pallosand being a wall weak to Knock Off is going to dent its role a bit, tho...

Well it does have three immunities already but a water immunity would have been amazing.
Imagine being immune to Volt Switch, resisting U-Turn and then being able to laugh at Hydro Pump from Rotom-W.
That would have been cool.

Stufful is easily the cutest thing to come out of these games, don't tell me otherwise.

Possibly a Luminous Moss (raises SpDef 1 level when hit by a Water attack) would work, assuming it gets Recover. I mean probably it won't be viable in OU, but might in BattleSpot. Weakness Policy could also work, allowing you to K.O. the user of the Water attack; maybe the raised Defense will be worthwhile against the rest of the opponents' Pokémon.

This does all assume Palossand has pretty good defenses, which I think is a very reasonable guess.

EDIT: Do you think it's pronounced "Palace-Sand" or "Pail-O'-Sand"?

I know we were joking about it and all... but I'm actually starting to get a little annoyed that they're revealing so many Pokémon so many quickly.

Don't get me wrong, I love most of what's been revealed so far - including the new one. But at this rate we're gonna know a large majority of the dex and it's just not going to be as much of a discovery and adventure.

Yeah, the number of evolutionary lines they've revealed so far for Gen VII is very close to the total number of evolutionary lines in Gen VI. I mean usually the odd generations tend to have more, but who knows if that will hold this time.

Okay, so I just got home and here's what I have to say about the new video.

Crab pokemon is weird. Not really digging that design at all. Don't like the eyes.

I'm really liking the sandcastle mons, especially now that I'm seeing them in action. I'm not entirely sure about its ability though. Does it's defense rise after it loses a certain amount of hp? Or after its hit by a certain type of move?

I take back what I said about Bewear's pre-evo a while back. I initially said it was cute. It essentially looks like a smaller Bewear, with a creepy smile and a butt plug.

Edit: Actually decided to read the top posts so yeah it's most likely a tag, but a butt plug is funnier to imagine

NEW POKEMON: (Because you thought us getting a new Pokemon yesterday was enough? HA! GF seems to be determined to let us know what a majority of the dex would be before the game is released. For those not counting, this is 39 new Pokemon (not counting unknown evolutions like for the Starters or alternate forms), that's already half of the Gen VI dex)

Crabrawler: The Water/Fighting Mantis Shrimp many have been wanting? Not quite...
Pure Fighting may seem odd for a crab, until you learn it's based on a Coconut Crab which is a land crab that can't breathe underwater. Personally I would have then made it a Ground/Fighting (a type combination not done yet) but let's focus on what we have on hand.
Speaking of the Mantis Shrimp, if you know anything about it you'd wonder if maybe Crabrawler was at some point meant to be one with its description of hating to lose, climbing the social ladder, and punching anything it gets irritated at. The Coconut Crab is just well known for climbing trees to eat coconuts (it does had a strong grip, but I think that's natural for most crabs). Oh, and they're hunted for consumption which goes along with a rather grisly tibit of Crabrawler's description:
Crabrawler’s pincers are sometimes torn off during its bouts—and they are said to be delicious.
So are we going to get a part of the story where Team Skull are cutting off Crabrawler's pincers to sell? Oh, BTW, depending on what a Coconut Crab has eaten their meat could become poisonous.
... it's driven not only to aim for a higher position than its fellows in terms of social standing, but literally to aim for a higher position in the landscape. Perhaps as a result, it’s sometimes found clinging to tall people or to the walls of buildings!
It clings onto people? How big is this thing? 2 feet. Alright, not that big by Pokemon standards but still I don't think anyone would not notice something that big hanging off them, especially with it being 15 pounds. "Gee, my pants are dragging down and I'm suddenly heavier, gotta lay off those big breakfasts".
Hyper Cutter is alright, it'll probably have a high Attack stat and would need to worry about Intimidate otherwise. However I'm going to guess we'll be seeing more of them using Iron Fist. It has plenty of moves it can learn, my guesses would include Drain Punch, Dynamic Punch, Focus Punch, Mach Punch, Power-Up Punch, Ice Punch, Comet Punch, and Mega Punch. Though its not Water-type I still don't think it'll learn Fire & Thunder Punch, Hammer Arm is more of an arm swing, don't see this thing getting any air time with Sky Uppercut, not ghost enough for Shadow Punch, and Dizzy Punch is just an odd case. It MIGHT get Bullet Punch, though probably not. Honestly as long as it gets Drain, Mach, Ice, and I also suppose Power-Up Punch it'll be okay.
Finally its appearance is alright. I think a problem people are having with it is the face, while not bad it's cartoony which then makes the entire appearance appear so. It also has a simple design which while alright makes me think this guy has an evolution coming (maybe into a Water/Fighting Mantis Shrimp?... Probably not).

Sandygast & Palossand: Think twice before burying someone, because you could be then burying them again later.
At least that's what its original/what we thought, but as it turns out its just the grudges of those who fell into battle (which could either mean normal battles or to-the-death battles, no quite sure) that possesses the sand. A little less horrifying, but it brings it back by mentioning they control people via their shovels. Specifically Sandygast has any kid who grabs its shovel bring it more sand to grow while Palossand can just control people to make it into a sand castle shape while using is shovel like a radar dish. So it's less Phantump family and more Honedge family. Also despite being small they're quite heavy, but I guess that's why quick sand is so dangerous.
If a Sandygast loses its shovel, it may put up a tree branch, a flag, or another item in its place. These Sandygast are wanderers in search of their own shovels.
I now kind of want alternate forms of Sandygast and Palossand using these items instead of a shovel.
The tunnel-like mouth of a Sandygast can suck the vitality from people and Pokemon. Apparently it’s a test of courage in the Alola region to put your hand in a Sandygast's mouth.
... next why don't you climb into the hallow body of Dusclops or Cofragrigus, have a yelling contest against a Mismagius, throw out a toy in front of a Banette, let Drifloon give you a ride, chop down a tree in a forest with a Trevenant, take a deep look into the back hole of a Shedinja (don't post that DexBuster comic), have a staring contest with a Sableye, hug a Frillish, and of course try wielding any member of the Honedge family. If you somehow keep your soul after doing all this, congratulations, you didn't win a Darwin Award though you really should have.
Already talked about its type and appearance when it was first shown via CoroCoro, so I guess what's left is disappointment its Ability. Water Compaction at first sounds like a cool Ability, immunity to Water-type moves for +2 Defense... except it doesn't give you Water immunity, and these two are weak to Water. Why? Is it because you get a +2 boost instead of a +1 like with Flash Fire, Sap Sipper, Lightning Rod, Motor Drive, and Storm Drain? I think more people would have preferred the Water immunity and a +1 increase instead of a +2 increase with no immunity. The Ability is useless due to its weakness, like I suppose in a Double Battle you can use Soak on it and try making it into a pure water tank in exchange for STAB on its moves but that's a bit much to do when you could use a bulky Water-type instead. Hopefully this thing has a Hidden Ability (that's easy to get) otherwise GF kind of messed up these Pokemon's potential.

Stufful: Not as punny as Bewear.
Really nothing more to add. There is that new bit of reveal about its design having a tag on it bottom... I don't get it. Is it a living plush toy? How? At this point I was perfectly fine accepting it was just a natural creature who's body is composed of a fluff material. Fine, we had weirder biology. But then you had to compound the error by giving it a tag. Okay, what does it have a tag? No, I'm not going to overlook this one, what purpose does the tag serve? The tag is something not part of the toy, its something added on to give some general info about it and maybe how much it costs, its something additional put onto the toy for selling purposes. Thus a natural creature which just so happens to look like a plush toy shouldn't have a tag. Yet here it is. Uh, these Pokemon maybe needed some more time in the designing stage.

I like Crabrawler. It's lazy eye looks hilarious and BIG MEATY CLAWS (Wish it was Water/Fighting though but the reasoning behind it being only Fighting is decent)

The sand castle mons look really nice in their in-game models, it's a shame that Water Compaction is pretty useless on them.

Stufful looks pretty cute with that smile, and I don't care if the thing on it's butt is a tag, I will always think it's a butt plug.

Crabrawler looks like Glass Joe from Punch Out. Definitely has some charm.

I'm surprised at how many people seem to not understand Crawbrawler's eye. It's blatantly obvious that it's a bruised/black eye like it got punched; the boxing theme gives it all away. Just weird to me how many people seemed to overlook it.

Honestly as long as it gets Drain, Mach, Ice, and I also suppose Power-Up Punch it'll be okay.
As excited as I am for this Pokemon, this post made me realize that Crabrawler may be similar to Conkeldurr, except probably not as bulky, since the crabs tend to all be frail. So what will it have to make it stand out? Apparently this video had it OHKOing a bunch of strong Pokemon, so higher than average Attack? Technically Conkeldurr has that too, with a base 140. Ability? Conkeldurr has Iron Fist as well. And they're both pure Fighting types. Now suddenly I'm seriously curious about what this Pokemon will bring to the table. I'm not saying that it will be an inferior Conkeldurr, because honestly in this case I trust that GF will give it something unique to give it its own niche as a Fighting type. But I really want to see what that unique thing is.

Edit: Here's the other video:
(@ 7:52)

Do we know which moves he uses from the animations? (I know Stone Edge). Also, I know that they didn't show HP bars at all since it's just a teaser montage, but, if we pretend that all of those attacks were OHKOs, can we estimate his base Attack stat based on the known stats of the other Pokemon?

Pokémon we already knew existed thanks to Corocoro leaks:

Sandygast and Palossand

I absolutely love this line. And Water Compaction is an interesting ability that does compensate for its Water weakness and is a great idea for a Sand Castle Pokémon.
I'm a little sad, though, since I'm torn between using Palossand and Mimikyu as I love both of them. This is why I'm getting both Sun and Moon: so I can have a second playthrough with these amazing 'mons that I have to pass up the first time.
Also, considering the Dex entry:
Its sandy vortex swallows them up in a heartbeat! Pokémon dragged into Palossand leave traces of their ill will behind. It’s thought that this negative energy may be the starting point of new Sandygast...
If I get a female one (or it is genderless), I'm naming it "Kayako".

Stufful

It's even cuter in motion! And he has a little tag like a stuffed animal! DAW! Someone get me a GIF of it's attack animation NOW!

New 'mons:

I really like this one. I only wish it was part Water (though there are many Water/Fighting-types out there). Yeah, I know what it is based on, but it comes more from the sad lack of interesting Water-types this Gen has. The only one I'm interested in Pyukumuku so far.

I've said it many times: this generation has amazingly awesome designs. Generation VII might just be my favorite set of 'mons if it keeps this up (and gives us some better Water-types).

Stuffed toy or not, the tag doesn't work.

You need to develop a sense of whimsy.

Better yet, copy Meteor Mash, and call that the Monster Mash. Hammer Arm can be Monster Smash!
As someone whose favorite holiday is Halloween and whose favorite type is Ghost, I approve of this idea. Though I would change Hammer Arm into Graveyard Smash.
Those moves sound like they would be a Graveyard Smash.

*complaints about Water Compaction on Palosand*
I like it. Yeah, it doesn't get rid of a Water weakness (watch, in Generation VIII or later, they'll buff it), but it does alleviate it.
Also, not every single Pokémon needs to be the most competitive thing ever(TM).

You're not the boss of me!

(It's funny since it wasn't the one you meant)

Stufful is literally a super strong teddy bear. Tag and all.

I don't know how anyone could not love this thing.
I know!

I want to like Stufful but it's smile is so creepy. It barely fits on its face when it opens its mouth and looks so weird to me. Plus I really don't like the tag, because while it is cute, the graphics engine doesn't do it any favors. I don't know if it's just me, but it doesn't look like a paper tag in game, looks way thicker than a tag. Couple that with where it's placed it just.. looks weird to me again.
