Well, the main reason chests were out in the open and not in their owner's house is because some people hadn't made houses yet. :/
First off I would like to apologize. I had taken some iron ore from a chest near that little brick bridge. I didn't take all of it though. It was out in the open and looked like a public chest. Next time I find a chest out in the open, I will ask if its OK, kay guys? Problem solved. What I'm gonna do is place some cobble stone in front of my doors. That way the intruder will have to break in. I will also place a water pit on the other side that they cant jump over.

It looks like you have to hand feed them, so it being automatic is very unlikely.
We'll see how it works out.
Maybe if spawning is THAT limited, Minecraft might start having an economy over demand for food?

Watermelons are slow to get and each slice only restores 1 heart or something like that. Mushroom stew doesnt stack.
