i went because i wanted to have some fun battling in a tournament setting. and even though i didn't have a great team i could have won the entire thing with, i still had a blast. isn't that what it's really all about?

Ya know, honestly I think you're right. While I did have a team that I think could have gone far, if not won, the whole point was to battle and engage with other players. I'm not mad I drove eight hours and didn't get in. I'm just glad I got to go and experience it. There's always next year, which will hopefully have a different (and more fair) selection process.

sucks you didn't get in bro. but yeah, at least you didn't let that stop you from enjoying the thing. out of the group i went with, only two of us made it and we both lost it in the second round. even if we didn't get in (which i wasn't even really expecting to anyway) it still would have been worth getting up at 5am on a Saturday.

Is anyone organizing a road trip/carpool to ST.Louis? This would be the perfect time to do so as its two weeks away!!

Perfect for those who did'nt get in at any qualifier like my self

SERIOUSLY? (sorry for caps) Yes! Now all I need is a way to St. Louis. *jumps up in the air and screams "Thank the Lord!"

i just got home from Nashville.

i made it but lost in the second round. i never got around to actually raising a team so i spent the ride to Nashville this morning sorting through my PC boxes in Diamond and Platinum looking for anything around level 50, and ended up with a shit team with nothing even EV trained. i somehow managed to win the first round against some girl with an Eeveevolution team, but lost the second round to some dude in a red Element shirt with Gyarados, Salamence, Snorlax, and something else.

fun as hell, got lost in the hotel a couple times, found a Jack Daniels gift shop, and hung out around Opry Mills for a bit before heading back to Clarksville.

Hey did you see a guy dressed as Ash there? Just curious

yeah, was that you? we were walking and saw an Ash on the level below us and tried calling down to him/you? about how badass we thought that was.

Well, I just got back from my trip about half an hour ago. Although I didn't get in, I have no regrets. The only way you're gonna get in is if you suck it up, make the drive and show up. I did just that but the deck was stacked against me today. For the record, the last Pokemon wristband given out was Salamence, #377. Go figure I got a super fast Pokemon, Aerodactyl as mine. ;)

I had a ton of fun hanging out with TAD, OmegaDonut, IPL, MattJ, Calvin Chan, Chakka, and a few others. I just wish that we had more time to hang out. I'm definitely looking forward to St. Louis now.

I also approached Mike Liesik, the guy who organizes all of these. I shook his hand and thanked him for what he's done to improve upon the tournament from last year. He appreciated it but said that much work needs to be done and that "we (the players) deserve so much better". He plans on taking the VGC all the way to the level that the TCG went, with local tournaments, guaranteed entry, more tournaments, and possibly more people per tournament. Right now though, it's baby steps. As an aside, he met with the developers of the new games last week. He said that they did indeed discuss the changes that HG/SS will bring to the tournament but they went even further. He said that they discussed the 5th generation and how that will affect the tournament style of play (I'm thinking that he is getting them to work things such as sleep clause into the next games).

I wish I wasn't so far from St. Louis so I could come support the Smogon people that have qualified. It would be mega bad ass to have a HUGE supporting base from Smogon there to cheer them on.

Great work guys. I'm kinda hoping you can show the world we're not all elitest assholes that can't have fun. (As they all think.)

Nashville first

So i played in Nashville yesterday. It was my first tournament, and i'm kind of a newbie to real competitive play.

Anyway i won the first 2 rounds. (i'm sure the first guy was really good), and the second guy was ok too, but i think he had the weakest Zapdos i have ever seen. I lost to a rain dance team in round 3, and missed the bracket rounds. The guy was pretty good but got 3 paralyzes on 3 thunderbolts, and then one of them i didn't get to move. Sorry i don't know any of their names on here, but they know who they are.

Overall it was a blast, and i learned alot. I had an abomasnow/other guy plan as my 5th/6th dude for rain dance teams which i planed to switch too after round 3 if i made it because i knew some of the players at that level would be more likely to play raindance teams. But the main thing i learned is at all levels the competition was pretty high, or at least my first 3 round oponnents were solid.

It was a blast, and i look forward to playing more competatively in the future. Also it was my first time competatively playing doubles which was a blast. I think it's a very fun format. I wish it was like best of 3 or something then it would make having the 5th and 6th dudes matter, and less chance for random hax to matter.

anyways it was fun. Good luck for those of you going to St. Louis. Also congrats to the finalist.

Congrats IPL and Omega :) Nice to see it all worked out, hopefully I'll get to see a video of the final soon.

Good luck to you all an OmegaDonut good game in the 3rd Round match we had. OmegaDonut you are that asian guy right? o_O just want to make sure.

Hi all, I just got back home from Nashville about 10 minutes ago. I will have an extensive warstory of all of my journey's events fairly soon. For now I will say that I had an awesome time hanging out with FiveK, Chakka, OmegaDonut, IPL, MattJ, a few other guys I don't remember the usernames of (Green 1-up shirt guy, for example), and Calvin Chan (unknowingly, I must admit I did not know it was him until about 2 minutes ago when I read 5k's post) the whole day. It is unfortunate that I did not get to play, as I told ipl on wednesday night "The biggest dissapointment will be if I don't get picked, because if I get picked and lose I have nothing to blame it on but myself." However, fivek is right, the only way I was ever going to get in was to make the long journey and try my luck. I had a great time regardless and the long drive was definitely worth it. I showed ipl, 5k, and a few others my team, so I will include that in my warstory. There is a very small chance that I will attend St. Louis to join the random pool as well as hang out with some smogoners, but if I do so I will use a different team anyway. Congrats once again to Allen (IPL) and Mike (Omega) for making an even longer trip than me and getting first/second. You guys are certainly very skilled battlers and had great teams as well. Good luck in St. Louis to you two and all of the other smogoners as well!

Oh, and in addition to doctorboyfriend's photos (I tagged myself in those just now), my dad took a few as well which will be included in my warstory.

Also, where is the video of IPL's semifinal match? He got extremely lucky at the end as his opponent used TEETER DANCE with CS smeargle, confusing his teammate, which proceeded to hit itself, saving IPL. I can probably be heard bellowing OH MY GOD or something along those lines as his opponent's infernape hits itself. While we're on the topic of weird teams, we saw butterfree make it to round 3, fly latios and fly articuno on the same team, flamethrower rhyperior, and many others. Again, dissapointing to see these teams make it in, but I had a great time nonetheless.

DRILL PECK IS A SOLID MOVE! Don't forget using Toxic against Heatran though. Who would've known Steel types are immune to Poison?

Anyway, I'm looking forward reading your warstory. The one thing that I will do differently for St. Louis is bringing along a camera. I can't believe that I came all that way without it. :( Regardless, you guys got a bunch of them and I can't wait to see them (especially the "special" shots with Palkia that Omega and I took of each other).

Hahahahaha I just remembered "drill peck is a solid move" right after I posted. Didn't we see someone use Fearow as well? I think Calvin said that was probably the drill peck guy. I completely forgot the genius who used toxic on heatran though xD. It kind of sucks that IPL and Chakka had to play in the round of 8, rather than the round of 4. IPL's semifinal opponent was definitely worse than Chalkey.

Nashville's crowd was hilarious. I loved the finals match of ipl vs Donut, the crowd was amazingly funny.

Unfortunately, you can't hear me or fivek, as we were standing a bit too far away from the guy who was recording. We had some pretty good times commentating the matches, and I was nailing predictions left and right. Everyone loved Omega's shinies, too, which was fairly amusing.

hee hee hee ...

Nashville's crowd was hilarious.

I went up to some random kid who looked lonely and said, "Hi. I'm Matt from St. Louis. Nice to meet you." And he was like, "Uh. Uh. Uh. I'm so nervous I forgot where I came from..."

0_o

I'm not even exagerating... I finally figured out he was from somewhere in Georgia, but he never figured out his name. He did get in though so props to him!

So maybe I should stop making all these little posts and formulate sonething coherent? Spoiler Alert: I didn't get in. Still, that didn't stop it from being the best trip I've taken in a long time! :D

For starters, we actually left the house ON TIME!!! 0.0 We usually end up leaving 2-3 hours late for family trips which throws a wrench in the whole trip right from the start! :/

Secondly, we enjoyed wonderful weather the whole way down and back. We drove with the windows down the whole time!

It was SUPER KEWL to meet several of the posters from Smogon who have helped me with advice, answers, IV battles and the like. It was nice to put a face to the poster. I must admit. No one looked like what I imagined!!! :D It was ESPECIALLY REASSURING to meet the guys and find out they were just normal cool guys like anyone else. I got along with everyone really well. We should have thought to exchange #s and meet up though. OOPS!

Last, but not least I had an awesome time just exploring the Mills Mall down there (we've got a similar Mills Mall up here in St. Louis for those of you coming to Nationals). I LOVED the aqurium restaurant, my daughter loved the Carousel, and my wife bought a bunch of clothes, so we all enjoyed ourselves.

I know it stinks for those of us that didn't get in, but I really hope that all of those that went had as fun a time as I and my family did! :D

See you all at St. Louis!!!

Oh yeah and fivek...
thanks for the battle! :D
