Pokémon Black/White in-game discussion

Although it's not necessarily anything super spectacular, I was pleasantly surprised with this random Solosis I just caught:
Modest 26/x/19/31/18/0
The defenses are a bit lacking but I was really surprised to get the perfect special attack and speed for a randomly caught Poke. I plan on using it as an offensive TR version in the battle subway. Now to SR for my Adamant Terrakion!

@megaman: Hidden power checker is in the pokecenter in Mistralton City

The encounter rate IS higher, or I'm extremely unlucky. I don't remember wanting to smash my DS in DPPt or HGSS (a small amount of annoyance, but not too much). I never used Repels much before BW.

Great breeding material at any rate though right? And definitely more than good enough for in-game use.

I honestly wonder if anyone even uses that goth-psychic Pokemon in Black...I know I haven't, though that's because I think it's ugly as hell lol. Even its movepool doesn't exactly scream good...

I really like gothitelle, her/his animation is so fun to watch ^_^... but her movepool isn't good, well by psychic standards anyway. Seeing as how it's pokedex says some random crap about stars, you would think it would get cosmic power; or better yet moonlight.

Just beaten the E4 on Black, now in N's Castle with the following:
Carracosta (Seatle): Lv47 Waterfall/Smack Down/Crunch/Curse
Galvantula (Zaptula): Lv47 Slash/Thunderbolt/Signal Beam/Gastro Acid
Cofagrigus (Spiroffin): Lv47 Grass Knot/Shadow Ball/Will-O-Wisp/Hex
Serperior (Smugleaf): Lv48 Strength/Leaf Blade/Giga Drain/Coil
Vanilluxe (Ice Cream): Lv48 Uproar/Ice Beam/Taunt/Flash Cannon
Scrafty (Roughie): Lv50 Dragon Claw/Crunch/Chip Away/Hi-Jump Kick

Only changes to moves was Dragon Claw over Sand Attack on Roughie the Scrafty. Anyways, my E4 run was pretty much the same as everyone else who had a Scrafty: Scrafty Domination. However, it wasn't exactly that easy...
I entered the League with my Pokemon at Lv47 across the board, & decided to do the hardest member first: Marshal. Let's see...Cofagrigus lead, defeated Throh with the tried & true WoW-Hex combo, helped by Mummy of course, then Sawk came in & haxxed Cofagrigus to death, then killed Serperior, Galvantula, & Scrafty...In that order. Enter Vanilluxe, & beat Sawk by hax. The same could be said for Conkeldurr, who was 2HKOed by Ice Beam, doing nothing in return due to a missed Rock Slide. Last was Mienshao, beat Vanilluxe, & Carracosta (Curse me failing to heal Carracosta before entering...). Luckily I used a Max Revive on Cofagrigus on the turn Carracosta died...So the Coffin; my last hope, used the tried & true WoW-Hex combo & won me the battle.
The rest of the battles were rather easy, thanks to Scrafty. I battled Catilin next, & soloed her with some help of Potions. Grimsley was easy, but Serperior helped alongside Scrafty for this round, taking care of Grimsley's Scrafty & Krookodile (After he killed Scrafty), while Scrafty took out the other two. And Shauntal was soloed by Scrafty, with Potion help (And hax).

Now for N's Castle. Any flaws that I should address? Should I use Reshiram in the final two battles? Other than that, good luck me.

EDIT: As far as my thoughts on the E4 are concerned, they are of a reasonable difficulty, somewhat challenging, particularly if you don't have the right tools, but they're not that hard; Scrafty just easy modes the E4, that's all.

Restarted Pokemon Black, this time I picked Snivy instead of Tepig
I have had a good feel of the pokemon, this time I play, but without using any Medicine inside battle. Outside is ok, so I cant abuse it in the Elite 4 and Gym Leaders.
So far Im outside the 2nd gym with:
Servine lv17
Panpour lv17
Drillbur lv15

I plan on having Drillbur as my powerhouse, Servine as my tank and I will drop Panpour very soon I guess. Maybe for Litwick and above.

I've been trying to catch a nice natured Joltic, and every once in a while, the pokeball shakes in mid-air, and only shakes once on the ground before it's caught. Is there any specific reason or timing to hit the a-button to get it to do that?

Nope, its called a Critical Capture
It works like Critical Hits do, however Crictical captures, if it happens (rarely) it has a really high chance of capturing it. I think. Just read the article on Serebii

How rare it is not tested though, myself I have never witnessed one yet (that or I didn't notice/miss it). In a week or so I'm planning to get the "real" White or Black and start a more "serious" play-through.

Did anyone else feel that Emboar was useless? Mine just seemed to lack hard hitting fire moves.
Not in the slightest. I picked Tepig and never regretted it. Emboar is slow, but Flame Charge helps it in that regard. And Arm Thrust may not be the strongest Fighting move, but I can't really complain about the attack that OHKO'd Lenora's Watchog.

In fact, my entire team worked out beautifully for me.

Emboar is magnificent.

Pansage was a bit "ehh:" around Pinwheel Forest, but then it learned Seed Bomb and evolved, and from there on it started becoming total epic win.

Woobat started off a little bleh, but that was remedied rather quickly upon its evolution. Very fast, and Calm Mind helps out greatly.

Zorua started off so weak, I thought it was hopeless. It basically lived off of the exp. share. I decided I'd wait and see how it did as a Zoroark before I dumped it. Excellent decision on my part. After it evolved and learned Night Slash, it started kicking some major ass. 2HKO'd Drayden's Haxorus with Foul Play, too.

Klink was a little slow to start as well. It was rather underwhelming, even against other Klink, but as my experience with Zoroark taught me, patience pays off. And it certainly did in this case. Once Klink gained a few levels, caught up with the rest of my team, it did really well. Moreso upon evolving into Klank- swept Skyla's entire team. I held off on evolving it into Klinklang so it would learn Shift Gear earlier. Despite having no fighting moves, Klinklang did magnificently against Ghetsis's Bisharp. Shift Gear, then repeated Gear Grinds did it in.

Basculin was amazing once it caught up with the rest of my team. Just amazing. Adaptability Aqua Tail is the best thing to happen to anything. And the worst thing to happen to my opponents.

And did anyone else have absolutely no trouble with levels at all? All I did was not avoid any trainers, plus semi-regular Audino grinding, and my entire team of six was past level fifty by the time I fought Drayden. And the Elite 4! Oh, they were pushovers! Complete and total pushovers! N wasn't much of a problem, Reshiram only took about three Ultra Balls. Now Ghetsis, he was a problem. Damn no-weakness Eelektross in particular. Emboar managed to take out Cofagrigus, Simisage OHKO'd Seismitoad with Seed Bomb, Klinklang took out Bisharp as I previously explained, I forget exactly how I dealt with Eelektross, but I know I used Emboar against Bouffalant. I was in class at the time, I had to make sure the teacher didn't see me playing.

Anyway, I've already EV trained some Generation V stuff (Meinshao, Scrafty, Volcarona, Haxorus (a Mystery Egg Axew, no less!)), and got them to level 100. I've also bred and EV trained a Drizzle Politoed and a Drought Ninetales, and am in the process of getting those to level 100.

I'm also considering EV training a defensive Shelmet. It's not as implausible as it sounds, either. Shelmet has higher defenses than Accelgor, and that's not even accounting for the Eviolite. Not to mention, it has Hydration and Rest.

Oh, and I caught a shiny Swellow last night. Shame it has a Modest nature, though.

EDIT: Critical captures, got lots of them. They don't appear to be too rare.

Shelmet does have better defenses than Accelgor, but why use it? a bulkier Spikes lead? I'd rather abuse Accelgor's awesome speed to lay Spikes than a defensive approach of Shelmet. It has pathetic attack and special attack so you can't use those either.

Regarding critical captures... Whilst going through the game I noticed at least one, but whilst I've been RNGing Cobalion I haven't noticed any at all; and that's hundreds of balls I've thrown at it (since I'm using Quick Balls). Maybe I'm just getting unlucky, but it definitely seems a lower rate than that of a normal critical hit.

AI is always fooled by the Illusion thanks to their lack of common sense. Hence, it'd be fun to disguise yourself as like, a Conkeldurr and never have your illusion smashed, unless your opponent uses a flying-type move.

I saw that when I use a pokémon immune to the foe's moveset (it was a Sawk, multiple times), it didn't attack me and just used Bulk Up. So, what about disguising as a Shedinja? Might work many times.

Klink's probably gonna stay trashy for a long time - his movepool is just that bloody barren. Cofagrigus might not be the most powerful poke, but in-game he's pretty neat to have around to sop up hits and dish 'em back out.

Considering we were just talking about "setting our own challenges", I think using s trashy Pokemon is justifiable. =P

Zoroark isn't immune to the moves that hit Sheddy, and the AI is programmed to switch out against a Sheddy if none of its moves could hit him. That was what happened in my SS at least, because I was using a Shedinja for in-game purposes pre-E4 and well, Jasmine swapped out her Magnemite 5 times out of 5 attempts. :/

loving the games
i haven't yet managed to "properly" complete my Japanese black or my English white, mainly due to two separate challenges that i am doing with two separate parties

i have however completed the game by “other” means

my fave team, which is what i'm using on my japanese white atm, is:
Samuwott
Darmation
Leavanny
Galvatula
Krookodile
Zweilous
all at 50, and i haven't even got the lucky egg yet(am just outside chargestone cave)
however, this is down to the nature of the challeng that i'm doing with my friend
i am also aware that type wise, this team is poor

Why bother with type wise...?

At the Chargestone cave with Level 50 pokes, you are just asking to stomp the game. You are even higher levelled than Cobalion, for goodness sake!

yeah this generation.. you can raise your pokemon levels very high, very early. gym badges allow it.

Lv 70 after badge 5. or something like that.

From what I've heard, Scrafty can rock all but one of the E4 by itself. I started using one, because fighting and dark on the same poke opened up a slot on my team for something else.

I cought myself a Joltik already, but I'll backtrack a bit (well, actually a large bit) to catch a Scraggy. What Ability is best on it? I suppose Moxie, but I just want confirmation. Final team will be:

Serverior
Seismitoad
Darmanitan
Scrafty
Galvantula
Reshiram

Is this team good?

i will say that the game becomes less enjoyable when you SERIOUSLY outrank all of the pre-e4 legendaries.

i'm loving the bugs of this gen, specifically galvantula, leavanny, and scolipede, which i am using on my semi-mono bug run on my white to last me until i can start the entirely different challenge with different people

if anyone actually cares about these "challenges", pm me and i'll tell you about them
