As you may have noticed, TPCi has begun running OP events for the Pokémon video games. Our goal is to develop these events into a strong OP system, with both grassroots support and large, premier tournaments. Management has decided that the Event Marketing team should lead this charge, and has created the Video Game Event Planner position to oversee all aspects of these events, including development of OP, event scheduling, and logistics. I accepted this position a couple of weeks ago, and have been working on transitioning my TCG OP responsibilities to the rest of the team.

I’ve spent the last 5 years working with Dave and Pete to develop the Pokémon Organized Play program into what it is today; one of the greatest OP programs in the TCG industry. During this time, I’ve interacted with a large portion of the community, either online or at events. It has been my great pleasure to work with you all and to see the constant growth of this program.

Responsibility for non-Premier tournaments, Pokémon League, the Professor Program, and any other items that I was working on will be absorbed by Dave, Pete and Brad until such a time as the company fills the position that I’m vacating. Please be patient with the OP team during this transition period, as there’s a lot going on at this time of year for everyone, so priorities may be rearranged to compensate for the loss of staff. I will remain available as a resource for the OP team, should they need me, but my focus will be on the video game program.

It’s entirely possible that video game OP and TCG OP will cross paths frequently, so I’m sure that we’ll have plenty of opportunity to keep in touch. I’m still a TCG player at heart, so I’ll always have a soft spot for the TCG OP program. I will continue to attend large events, such as US Nationals and the World Championships, though my role at these events will be focused on video game OP. I look forward to seeing you all there!

As the quote said, Mike Liesik, who was in charge of so many things in the TCG aspect of pokemon, and the person who started the Video Game Championships, has left TPCi's TCG Section and joined onto the NEW VIDEO GAME ORGANIZED PLAY team.

This wonderful news! seeing that now along with the TCG, the video game will now have a consistant Championship series.

At long last, what we all have been praying for for so many years, so coming true!

DISCUSS!

Awesomeee.
Unless it's going to be exclusively 2v2. Then, booooo.
What I really want is to see some good 1v1, 6-on-6 championship matches.

=D

I don't see that happening at all. Maybe 3v3. 6v6 battles will probably end at midnight. Unless Japan changes their format to singles, were stuck with doubles.

It's because they just want to make the matches quicker, but try to make sure hax won't have too big of an impact on the game (which it'll do anyways).

It's just a balance between two extremes.

And sweet! Finally, I'll have an incentive to EV train! (I play Shoddy, I'm reasonably good, but usually don't have much to EV and such.)

Awesome, let's hope for more locations as well. This will make me feel much better if I don't get into the Top 4 this Saturday, there will be another chance next year.

This seems like interesting news, especially since the only tournament I've really liked was the GameStop PBR Tournament endorsed by Nintendo. I'm wondering how the video game OP will work though: Will there be seasonal tournaments in major cities like Dallas or New York? Truth be told, I don't play the TCG, so I'm looking forward to how this turns out.

I think They do 2v2 because it is quick.
Look at our standard metagame, most non-shoddy matches take like 10-30mins(longest battle I've ever had was like an hour), while 2v2 takes like 5-10min.

Well, In the TCG, there are 2 ways to get to worlds:
Make the top 16 in Nationals
Top 16 in overall tournament ranking

For the TCG they use a ELO ranking system:

http://www.go-pokemon.com/op/tournaments/docs/2008-2009/Ratings_and_Rankings_FAQ.pdf

TPCi's TCG Rating system said:
Battle Road Autumn/Spring Tournaments: 4K
City Championships: 16K
State/Province/Territory Championships: 32K
Regional Championships: 32K
National Championships: 32K
Basicly what this means is if you win a match in a regional, it is worth more toward your rating than if you win a match at a city, but you also lose more rating at a regional than a city.

They are good documents, and is worth the read.

Now i would like to see this kind of system implemented into the Video Game Aspect of OP. This would give us more local tournaments, no flooding of some other events, and may even get rid of any attandence cap for the tournaments.

Thoughts?

It will more than likely be 2v2, since Japans main metagame is 2v2, and arguably 2v2 takes a lot more skill than singles does. I don't get why people hate it anyway, especially since most people haven't even played it. We will have to wait for a doubles sim for that I guess.

Anyway great news Ultimatedra, since I can't make this one in the futue I hope to make some.

I'd find this interesting if my mental well being wouldn't at stake while playing in a serious Pokémon battle in front of a huge crowd of people, having a stronger desire to win than usual in the meantime, because one loss means I'm done. Or if I was any good at double battles.

Why is it always doubles?
Why can't I just be able to use Pokémon I hacked within the legal limits? Why do so many people get enjoyment out of using Spiritombs with Wonder Guard? Why am I asking so many questions?

As it is, regular Wi-Fi and 4 vs. 4 online double battles on Pokémon Battle Tech-Demo is stressful enough. But entering a tournament wouldn't be very fun, aside from going sight-seeing while I'm at the place where the tournament's being held.

Complaining like this isn't usually in my character, but I'm so very frustrated about the dependency to hack in my game while hacking is probably against their policy, and my severe lack of any good enough Pokémon to use that are convincing enough to not look too hacked.

that's cool, local tournaments like TCG would be nice, as I;m pretty sure no one in 20 miles of me is as good as I am, I don't live near many players

This is excellent news. It means that there will be something for me to win every year! (:P) Mike is a great guy, and I am glad he is taking over the video game OP. He will do a great job.

Indeed. I don't see why Nintendo loves 2vs2 so much.

I mean, yeah, it is fun, but it's not the standard.
Says who? Lmao. Ask Nintendo, and I think they will say otherwise. :\ Smogons rulings are not the worlds rulings.... *sigh*

Anyway, this is indeed good news! It's nice to know that things will keep on happening here, and that they will be consistent like they are over in Japan. Absolutely great news.

Ahahaha, we "stole" Mike Liesik from the TCG, how awesome is that? For anyone who's never played the TCG, this is a very, very good person to have on our side. We finally have a great ally for the video games.

Finaly? he was the one who suggested JAA,VGS, and VGC. he was the number one supporter for the video game, and now he has time to give this game it's full potential.

Great! Now lets just hope theres some of these in Australia, hopefully in Melbourne. I'm preparing my team and it will be good... and I will win...(hopefully)

I would honestly love to see Singles finally the same level of official competitive play that Doubles has, even though it probably won't be like Smogon's version of Singles.

At least in-game, Double Battles are more of a gimmick than anything else. That was his point, I guess.
