I'm too strapped to get it immediately, but I think I'm gonna ask for it for Christmas. Can't wait though.

i can't afford to throw away 12+ hours a day at the moment (which is what will inevitably happen when I get this game) so i will probably have to wait until the Christmas holidays. looking forward to it though!

So, since I see people going nuts over this everywhere, I got a question.

If I wasn't too fond of Morrowind, and haven't played Oblivion, will Skyrim change my mind on the series, or would it be waste of cash?

I just don't get into it at the start. Do stuff around Seyda Neen, maybe some stuff next town, and get incredibly bored. I dunno, maybe I should try it a but further.

Also, I ain't fan of the combat at all. Feels... stiff? There's something awkward about it, but I can't really point exactly what.

It was really fucking hard to get into Morrowind, but I thought Oblivion got pretty boring too. Hopefully Skyrim is as good as Fallout 3.

Oblivion definitely had a stiff, punching bag quality to the fighting system, but now everything is much more fluid. Weapons also offer more flexibility; they have their own attacks, but they might have different attacks when wielded with a different weapon or shield. Even the bows have a mélêe attack now. And as far as movement in general, it's much more realistic. The strafing feels natural and they have removed things from Oblivion such as bow-backpedalling

All in all, I really don't think that not playing Oblivion will detract from your experience, and Morrowind was 2 generations back, so Bethesda has definitely improved since then

Hi guys. I've never played an Elder Scrolls game before, except briefly Oblivion on a friend's console. Will I still think Skyrim is amazing? It looks great, and I think I'll get it, but I don't want to miss out because I'm missing background or something.

aaaaaaaand that's the third time that video's been linked in this thread.. we're still on page 1 :evan:

You don't really miss out on anything, it's a completely new story and the flavour around the world does a good job of teaching you about the history of the land.... you'll need to look around though. If you've played Fallout 3 or New Vegas, the way you move around and look/picks stuff up is very similar to that. I don't pay a great deal of attention to the lore of the land but am enjoying it thoroughly!

Hehe got my skyrim today :D, but its a shame that they butchered the character creation step and all dark elves are forced to have skinny heads (without mods anyway) :/. Is there any advanced option during character creation or am I stuck with a skinny head? I want my blue redguard :(

Dude, Oblivion,Fallout 3 and New Vegas have terrible and boring stories.I've past all three and have gotten all the achivements for them(excluding FO NV Add ons) and done pretty much everything in them, but I could not tell you what the main story in either of them was about.I know little, the basics but couldn't tell you Anything about the story that you couldnt learn in the first 30 minutes of playing. The first thing i do in these games is finish the intro missions and comeplety forget about the story until around 30 hours or so.In fact, i dint start the main quest in Fallout 3 until I had reached the level cap.

Basically, the best thing about these games is the world and the side missions. The main story in all 3 games blow and you don't need to know a thing about the world/setting itself.

Just explore and enjoy the side missions and forget about the story until your ready to put the game down and ready to move on.

That's what I do at least.

I got the game at 10 am.Why isn't there an option for normal fans..?

Tbh, I was never a big fan of the character creation step. Not that it wasn't done well itself; it just seemed like I spent forever crafting my ideal Breton, only to never see his face unless I went out of my way to see it. Even in the menu, I focused more on whatever I went in there for, not my character's face.

Morrowind can be hard to get into, because the character itself seemed so rigid (tried to play it a couple of months ago, was disappointed). Oblivion was a step up, but there were too many exploitable features in it (making yourself almost invincible without armor and backpedaling come to mind). While I don't think the storylines of the games were too boring, even in Fallout 3 or New Vegas, I do hope that there's incentive to follow it in Skyrim.

For the people that own it: would you say the early game experience is a step up from previous Bethesda games so far?

whoops there goes a day
Read: this game is like, amazing. I never got oblivion, but had morrowind on pc.

Yep, the intro is very well done and and does a good job at getting you started.I've only played 3 hours, but I can already tell that the game is far better than oblivion.

My brother was watching me play and even he was impressed and says he wants to play it.This is an amazing achievement considering the only rpg he has ever played is pokemon and he until this point openly hated rpgs.Hes the shooter, xbox live only type of guy and this is the first time in his life that he wanted to play an actual rpg.

note: dualcasting is fucking awesome, being able to maintain a duel fire/shock long enough to take out a group of enemies is sweet
Went with High Elf / focusing on the mage for this char

I think I would like parts of this game, and detest other parts.

I like having really well crafted worlds that I can just go exploring in.

I hate feeling like I'm missing something or that there's a 'wrong decision', so decision tree games tend to make me feel annoyed.

I'm not sure how I would feel about the combat system.

I went with the lizardman, partly because I always pick the freakiest looking option, and partly because breathing underwater is useful.

I dunno if its because I am starting using spells for the first time in a ES game, but combat seems way, way easier.

But enjoying it so far. My mind isnt really blown yet, but it is definitely a step up from oblivion.

Dude what? I thought the story in New Vegas was excellent. I was immersed, intrigued, and entertained the entire way through the main quest, and most side quests I did seemed to connect to the main story in some way. In my opinion, New Vegas is the best "open world" game I've ever played. Yes, better than Fallout 3, better than Oblivion, etc.

Breathing underwater is useless. There's always potions to help you in the event that you need to stay underwater for a long time(and that's unlikely). And there might be an item that gives you permanent water breathing, like oblivion. The reptile race is the most useless race in the game.

Fallout NV was my favorite of the three. For several reasons.First, the unique weapons actually look different, unlike F 3 where they just did more damage.Second, the challenges are awesome.Third, the speech and barter checks took chance out of the equation.Best decision ever.I also liked the addition of stronger enemies than standard deathclaws since at level 21-22 your pretty much a god in F 3.All in all, FO NV is just an improved FO 3.But nothing to do with the story.Though I did like the fact that there were several choices and the main quest forced you around the world.

Mages are awful in this game. I have no idea why I thought it would be a good idea to use a High Elf. I'm constantly dying because I run out of mana after killing 1 or 2 guys, and then the remaining enemies are faster than me while I'm backpedaling and trying to regenerate my mana. After 2 hits I'm already dead. I should have picked a Nord or something and just used enchanted weapons.
