The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

I disagree with this since that most of the Saints' recent wins have been by less than 7 points.
It went into overtime with the Redskins.
THE REDSKINS.
I'd say the Colts are #1 since they have the more balanced team (Saints' defense has played terrible in recent weeks.)
Still, the Packers won, so I'm happy.

Well I meant more like referees arguably handing the Colts 2-3 games, but the same could be said for the Saints/Redskins game so "whatever".

Sp glad someone else agrees the Colts have been handed games. I thought it was just me and Deion Sanders. >.<

All those Packers and Ravens penalties were ridiculous. >.<

and to the ugy who was irritated by two Joe Flacco ints in a row...it was just as bad watching Donald Driver fumble...WHICH DOESN'T HAPPEn! and then seeing a ball bounce off his leg and getting picked off the next play they get haha

No wonder the packers have the best Defense in the league...the other team gets all their yards on penalties. >.<

No the same can't be said about the Saints and the Skins. Skins have themselves and only themselves to blame. Hang on to the damn ball and MAKE 23 YARD FIELD GOALS

saying the steelers are losing because polamalu is an excuse. great teams overcome injuries.

You say this because your team hasn't had to deal with major injury issues. Your attitude changes when you lose a major contributor like Polamalu. And don't even try to compare Benson's injury to this, because you lost him for a single game, and a running back is far easier to replace than the best SS in the game. Anyone who knows football knows that Troy Polamalu is a game changer, and when he is hurt the defense greatly suffers. Remember what happened when Carson Palmer got injured? I bet you weren't saying "great teams overcome injuries" then.

Yet great teams overcome bullshit penalties... i'm just sayin.

Lol, and once again with Super Bowl XL. That shit is so tired it's not even funny, get over it please.

As with any statement, there are always going to be exceptions. I am a firm believer that great teams overcome "questionable" refereeing, but naturally there are always a few instances where it's impossible to overcome (wasn't there a game last year involving the Chargers relevant to this?). This I am willing to concede to, but I don't think it happens nearly as often as people complain it does. A bad call directly decides the outcome of a game maybe once every few seasons, but people like to whine like it decides every game. Every team has to deal with human referees who make mistakes, and I strongly believe that almost all questionable calls can be overcome. So your touchdown gets called back because of a holding penalty. What prevented you from scoring on the next play? So a bad pass interference call gives your opponent good field position. The referee isn't making your defense stop doing its job. I think people spend way too much time blaming their losses on referees and less time evaluating what their team did wrong. I'm a Steelers fan, and my team has lost 6 games by a grand total of 21 points. Could I go back and evaluate each game and find bad calls by the refs that went against us? Absolutely. But it won't change the outcome of the game, and it won't make me feel any better. My team will still be 6-6. I get frustrated when refs fuck up a call and it puts my team at a disadvantage. 5 minutes later I'm over it. I can't blame any of my team's losses on anyone but ourselves. Every game could have been won, every bad call overcome, but my team just didn't get it done.

Of course, it's much easier to blame your team's shortcomings on the referees than to admit your team isn't perfect. I, like everyone else, have been guilty of this more than once. I just wish some people didn't make such a habit of it.

It's the coach's job to evaluate what their players did wrong regardless of what questionable breaks they did or didn't receive. Us fans can go on complaining about said questionable calls. :*

Eh, I'd rather discuss with people some deeper aspects of football. It'd be cool to talk to someone about mechanics and coaching, to break down a team and analyze their strengths and weaknesses, what types of strategy they should use to best utilize their talent, and how to develop said talent. Not sure if I'm in the right place for that though.

Refereeing has to decide something like 1/5 to 1/3 of college/NFL level matches in a way that it should not. The only league with anywhere near proficient human refereeing is the MLB, where of course "technically" refereeing decides every game, but referees are actually really consistent with computer testing of pitch interpretation and make better human judgements that are necessary!

Of course, NFL refereeing is nowhere nearly as bad as the NBA refereeing, which is fucking scandalously bad.

P.S. maybe more infuriating is the fact that the broken NFL overtime system has possibly singlehandedly decided the course of both the Giants' and Falcons' seasons in favor of the Giants, screwing over the Falcons in an utterly unfair way. Grrrrrrrrrrr. I feel this has not received nearly any attention.

yeah the first chargers v broncos game last season. it's unique because that one mistake unarguably and clearly decided the outcome of the game. at least the chargers rightfully ended up winning the division anyway.

Its pretty obvious Polamalu has a great impact on the Steelers D... When Ed Reed is out for the Ravens, teams actually throw to that side. When polamalu/Reed are in the game for their respective teams, teams try to avoid that side as much as possible

If I ever listened to WaterBomb, I would say "Your defense should stop them". I understand this. But I still think that both offenses should get a chance... both teams have three elements... why do they only get to use two.

So I agree.

lol, I like you!

I can't say I'd be opposed to a change in the way overtime works. I don't sympathize with people who say their team has lost BECAUSE of the current system, but I do believe changing it to allow both offenses a chance would be a nice addition. Wasn't there a statistic somewhere that said the team that receives first in OT actually only wins 47% of the time?

that stat was for overtime games this year, and yes that is still pretty bad

Maybe the NFL should have a time limit for the 1st team (the one that recieves the coin flip), and if the go over it the other team gets a turn?

Sure, we cannot know if they lost. Some amount of time they would go on to lose anyway, but other times they would win. Thus it is obvious that some teams do lose merely because of not receiving the ball first. You cannot preach in absolutes about something that is factually "grey".

All I am preaching is defense. Sudden death is not an automatic win for the team that receives first. I realize the NFL has put huge amounts of emphasis on offense in recent years, but a team has to have at least an adequate defense if they want to contend in the playoffs. EVen a team like the 2007 Patriots, with tons of offensive firepower, still had a solid defense. The reason they aren't changing the system is because, if they did, teams would focus less on defense because they knew their offense would get a chance. This would encourage teams to focus more on offense while not caring so much about defense. This is simply a philosophy I disagree with on a personal level. I love defensive football, since I played that side of the ball. I'm sure there are millions of people that would love to see every game be an offensive fireworks display. That's just not what I want to see.

that was some of the worst playcalling i've ever seen from the steelers

also i slept during the majority of the second half. the game was that bad
