Cincinnati only put up 30+ points against Green Bay. Their offense only scored 17 against Pittsburgh (6 were defensive). Their Pro Bowl QB threw for 178 yards, their Pro Bowl WR caught for 54 yards, and the NFL's 3rd leading rusher rushed for 76 yards. Out of the 3 games they've played so far, they've only put up "powerhouse" numbers in 1.
I don't really want to argue with you because you're actually a reasonable guy, I just needed to correct that first statement and politely disagree with the second :)
Ah, thanks for the correction. For some reason I thought they scored 33 points. Still its an improvement from last year.
And as a Carolina fan, I have to say, I did temper my expectations coming into the season. I followed this team throughout the summer, things just did not go right during the offseason. Starting with the Peppers issue, all the way to training camp, I just felt that things were not lining up in the Panther's favor. The draft gave me a bit of hope, I thought they got some good players. Then Kemoeatu went down for the year. Then they lost every preseason game, often by blowouts. The injuries kept piling up. I tried to dismiss it going into the season, hoping the running game would carry us, and Jake would stay out of the Panther's way. Then the Eagles game happened. Then the defense wastes Delhomme's effort against Atlanta. Then STEVE SMITH OF ALL PEOPLE wastes the Defense's effort against Dallas. (despite giving up 200 rushing yards, they did hold the team to 13 points.... or should I say, the cowboys held themselves to 13 points). I would've have been fine with 1-2 going into the bye. The Panthers can recover from a 1-2 start. They can't recover from a 0-3 start. Dallas gave Carolina opportunity after opportunity to win that game. And they did not capitalize.
Here is what I've gathered from the Panther's so far:
1) The defense has been seized by injuries. They miss Kemoeatu ALOT. They need Chris Harris in the line up. They need to find a new Free Safety, the only thing worse than Charles Godfrey's coverage is his tackling. They need a new Strongside Linebacker, Nai'l Diggs is way over the hill and James Anderson isn't much better.
2) Delhomme has "recovered" per say from the Arizona and Philadelphia games, but he has lost his arm strength.. something he'll never recover. He can no longer throw the deep ball and he can no longer fit the ball in tight windows. Think Chad Pennington just with a little, and I mean
little, bit more arm strength and a lot less accurate. It will be time to move on soon. And Matt Moore is not the future.
3)Holy Shit Jeff Davidson NEEDS TO GO. If the game is tied after the Panther's first drive, he completely abandons the run. He calls plays as if he had Drew Brees at QB. WHY IS DELHOMME THROWING 30 TIMES WHEN ITS A 6 POINT GAME!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? To make matters worse, its well known that the Panthers have lost most of their games when Delhomme passes more than 30 times.
This Bye Week couldn't have come at a better time.
The good news is that their next 3 games are Washington, @Tampa Bay, Buffalo.
The bad news is that after Buffalo its (not in order) @Arizona, @New Orleans, Atlanta, @New England, @NY Jets, @NY Giants, Minnesota, New Orleans. With Miami and Tampa in between somewhere.
More bad news: The panthers are in the bottom half in every major statistical category except pass defense (a result of teams running down our throats all game)
Even more bad news: No first round pick next year.
