In general, historically physical typings mostly don't self-resist, while historically special ones mostly do. Which makes sense to me. It's easy to see that water won't do much to water, fire to fire, electric to electric. Whereas there's no reason ground shouldn't hit other ground, or fighting other fighting - and one of the few things that can really put a dent in a rock is another rock.It always bugged me how Ground doesn't have a resistance against Ground and Rock doesn't have a resistance against itself either. If they fixed that then those typings would certainly be more viable.
Water otter just does look over designed. It's the first starter with a logo on it, and the logo just doesn't make any sense. Do they think we're stupid? We can't tell that it's an otter if it doesn't have a shell on its stomach?
Agreed. Heatran has weakness to Ground and water as well, along with fighting. He's still good, and I'd argue a 4* ground weakness is worse then a 4* water weakness, although less strategically abusable. The fighting weakness hurts too. Overall it just takes the right stats. If you think about it Fire/Ground only actually has two weaknesses. Provided decent BS and EV investment, and backed by 4 resistances, it's not too shabby.
Sure, it's weakness to Water and Ground, of all things. Personally, I'm more than satisfied with it. You're bound to have some weakness right? I'm okay with having it be ground, just couple him with a nice levitator/flyer, many options there.
And as pointed out above, you can see water attacks coming from a mile away
Given a decent enough bulk naturally and maybe some EV investment, I don't see how a Fire/Ground can't be built as a tank.
Of course, if it does turn out that the pig is Fire/Ground, I can see a case for making it into a pure Physical attacker instead. Immunity to Will-o-wisp and Thunder Wave is awesome.
We don't know if the shell shape is a logo. For all we know, it might be a functional part of his body...it seems to be bulging out too far from his chest to simply be a color element. Maybe its a hard lump that he smashes shells on. Maybe it's a little pouch that he puts things in. Maybe it will grow to become armor and cover his chest when he evolves. Point is, you might as well say that Bulbasaur's bulb is a logo, and that's just not true.
I actually had a hard time figuring out what Mijumaru was until someone pointed out the shell thing. Sorry if that makes me "stupid", but it's the truth. Sea Otters aren't the only water-dwelling mammals...I was thinking he looked more like a beaver or a muskrat.
Even if the shell is a logo, plenty of Pokemon have arbitrary design elements. Why does Pikachu have big red circles on its cheeks? Why does Espeon have Ampharos' red gem in her forehead when none of the other Eeveelutions do? And what's the deal with those bright gold circles on Umbreon when he's supposed to be a Dark pokemon? These things don't have any obvious purpose, but they don't need to. They just add a little flavor to the design. You can think whatever you want about Mijumaru, but he's not nearly as stylized or over-designed as something like Garchomp.
you are asking for a mini-uber then, infernape got high speed and good atacks but he cant take a hit, if you want something, fast, strong and bulky then its just not fair.
I might as well not say that Bulbasaur's bulb is a logo because it's not. I don't know if we're looking at the same picture or not, but Mijumaru clearly looks as if its wearing some sort of children's pajamas with a big stupid logo on it. And yes, a logo is far different from Pikachu's cheeks and other animal markings. You might as well have put a nike swoosh on the otter.
Stuff like this pisses me off. What's special about Charmander Bulbasaur or Squirtle apart from the fact that you grew up with them? It's people hating on the new generations of Pokémon that make me look back and question my own gen. You could just as easily say Charmander is some designless fire lizard thing, Bulbasaur is a whatthefuck I don't even know with a plant thing on it's back and Squirtle is a gay wee turtle. Of course we don't say that because a) it's wrong and b) there's no bandwagon/meme brigade to stick up for us and help us out.
95% of us hate the water type, but there's still 5% who really like it and that just solidifies my notion that anyone who says these new pokes suck would probably say they sucked no matter what they looked like.
120/110/95/20/80/105. How's that for a spread for the FE fire pig? Speed, bulk, and good physical attack - at the expense of abysmal special attack. Sure isn't mini-Uber.
i'd still go for it. going User vs User would be great either way imo. Just to have that option.
Edit: And btw.. on one of the pics of the starters using attacks.. the fire pig at it's base form... is at a level 50 with 136-138 full HP. thats a pretty obvious giveaway of a wallish Pokemon, or am i wrong? Either way.. now you know a little bit of the stat.
Its exploitable weakness is that it's stopped cold by any physical wall without a fire weakness. Provided it doesn't get Swords Dance or Grass Knot (neither of which I consider thematically likely) Hippowdon destroys it.@Cantab: He better have some extremely exploitable weakness
I think the fire pig will have decent defenses but I think attack is going to be it's highest base stat, I just can't see him being special based, and I don't think he's going to be defense based either, if he ends up being a big burly fire warthog then I'm hoping for something like...
100/105/95/60/75/100
Though it's probably guaranteed to get outclassed by infernape unless it has a damn good movepool or secondary typing, because fire types die anyway.
This post made me so very happy. How is a Nike Swoosh similar to a shell? One is a symbol for a shoe corporation, the other is...a shell. You're going to have to give me your definition of logo, because right now I'm just not getting it. So, Pikachu's cheeks are natural animal markings? OK, show me a mouse with giant bright red circles on its cheeks. What about the big metal X on Metagross' face, or the triangles on the bellies of the Lati twins? Are those logos?
I agree with you that Mijumaru is the worst looking of the starters...Tsutaja all the way for me! But maybe we are looking at different pictures of him, because I think the shell is a physical growth on his body. The way the two lines on it curve inwards make it look three-dimensional, and the way Mijumaru is resting his hand on it makes me think it's some kind of pouch that he's about to open. I guess its all a matter of perspective.
As for the whole pajama thing...I think I can explain that. Sea otters have black paws, dark brown fur, and light brown (almost white) fur on their faces. When you look at one, it almost seems like it's a much more lightly colored animal wearing black pajamas...kind of like the classic "tuxedo" adult penguins have.

GameFreak's designers chose to exaggerate this by making the head stark white, and they based the body on blue rather than brown in order to emphasize that it was a water type. I can't say I agree with their choice, and I wish they'd given Mijumaru a bit more of a furry texture, but they did base their design on reality. Real sea otters even have a patch of lightly colored fur on their chests, close to where Mijumaru's shell would be. I think this photo shows that pretty well...

Also, predicted stat spread for final form of Pokabu, if it's a boar:
HP: 121
Attack: 121
Def: 73
Sp. A: 71
Sp. D: 73
Speed: 75
Fire tank with Megahorn and recoil moves.
