Smogon Simple Questions & Suggestions Thread

The entires for each move are in the format of Generation LearnMethod
Generation will be what generation (1-8 for now) that move can be learned in
This is paired with a specific letter indicating how the move is learned:
  • L indicated the move is learned by level up, its followed by what level the move is learned at (8L5 means in generation 8, this pokemon learns this move at level 5).
  • M indicates the move is learned as a TM, TR, or HM (8M means learned via TM/TR in gen 8).
  • T indicates the move is learned through a tutor (8T means learned via move tutor in gen 8).
  • E indicates the move is an egg move (8E means the pokemon can obtain this move through breeding in gen 8).
  • V indicates the move can be obtained through a virtual console transfer (8V this pokemon can obtain this move in a virtual console game and then can be transfered to gen 8).
  • S indicates the move is learned through one of the events, see the eventData array for all events. The integer after S is the array index for the event in question. (8S10 means this pokemon learns this move through a special event/distribution, and the specific event details can be found in the eventData array for this pokemon at index 10).
  • R - R meaning Restrictive. This handles any special cases like the various Rotom forme's moves.
Awesome! Thanks! This is perfect for my project!

Trying to fix bad Starters!

Starters in definition are "the Pokémon the trainer chooses at the beginning of their Pokémon Journey and the main protagonists of the Pokémon Series of games".

Now being the Main Protagonists of the Game they're in makes you think that they are very strong, but even though some of them are incredibly strong to the point of Uber Level some of them are weaker than your average 3-Stage 400-500 BST Pokémon, So why do they suck well-.

The Problem

Now the reason for this is because of how a Pokémon Functions or their specific "Niche" some Pokémon have a niche they can fulfill, for example Wall Breakers, Defensive Pivot, Sweeper, Suicide Lead, Defogger, etc., having a role or multiple roles help develop a Pokémons Viability and justify using them on your team, but seeing this title will probably spoil the fact that Most Starters do not have a Niche in the OU tier and end up on lower tiers where they can actually find a purpose, which is kinda sad and depressing when you find out that your favorite Starter which the one you go on with your journey with is in NU, so I will try to fix them.

Fixing Process

Now when i fix a Starter I will mostly be aiming for it to be on the OU tier which is the the highest tier that regular Pokémon can be played at without stumbling at Box Art Legendaries.

My method of fixing these Pokémon will be by finding them a Niche that they can fulfill successfully this done by giving them new moves, abilities and shuffling there Base Stats, so without further ado let's get fixing shall we.

Meganium has only one role which is being a cleric (a role it already has high competition with Audino) by having Aromatherapy and the other notable moves it has is Dragon Tail, Giga Drain, Synthesis, Petal Blizzard, Leech Seed, Swords Dance, and Seed Bomb, this Pokémons moveset is just pathetic the first thing I'll add is Calm Mind as boosting move that pairs well with Giga Drain, the second thing I'll add is giving more coverage so things like Focus Blast, Power Gem, Ice Beam and Weather Ball which will pair great with it's new ability Chlorophyll now when I give abilities to Starters I want to give them ones the fit in thematically and this ability is very common for Grass Types why not give it that, but the problem with giving this ability to it is that it will face competition with Venusaur which is why I gave it a new move to give it a different niche than a Sun Sweeper and that is Solar Drain a 80 BP move that heals the user for 75% of tha damage they dealt this move will help it establish a Niche as a Bulky Sustainer paired with Leech Seed, and Calm Mind to not only heal more but also tank more special hits, now for the Base Stat changes I decided to buff it by 10 points to be the same BST as Typhlosion then added more points in HP, Def, SpDef and SpAtk to help it at its Niche More.

So is it capable of having a Niche in OU? Do you have anything you want to add? I'll be happy to read your replies and hopefully make my skills at fixing Pokémon better since I do plan on making more of these.

I like what you're trying to do, but I think you should give it a nice secondary typing. Maybe grass dragon would be cool? I feel like this would be, outclassed by Venu even with Solar Drain.

yeah like drpumpkinz said briefly, this is not the thread for this. this is a thread meant for simple and easy to answer question about smogon, such as question like "what are badges." Your post is best suited for the pet mods forum. Pet mods are formats where changes to moves, abilities, and Pokemon are added to increase their viability, and you should post your idea there, where you will find other people who are interested in similar things.

If your question is related to base stats, moves or abilities, it'd be a good idea to check out the SWSH research thread or the Past Generations research thread depending on the game.

Here is a short list of very frequently asked questions that you can consult before asking your own question, as the answer you're looking for may already be here.
Q: Can we delete inactive accounts with 0 posts?
A:
We're not deleting inactive accounts because chances are an older user could return and want their account back. The most that'll probably be done is name changes if a user is desperate for the name. But in general a purge is very unlikely in the near future.

Q: What is an alert?
A:
Alerts are notifications that you receive in the dropdown in the top right corner of the forum index. You get an alert if you've posted in a thread and there are new replies, you've been tagged by someone in a post, you're watching a forum and there are new threads, you're watching a thread and there are new replies, if you receive a "Like" on a post, if someone follows you, and if you receive a visitor message on your profile. Furthermore, if you don't want to receive alerts for any or all of these things, you can toggle your preferences in the Control Panel.

Q: What are followers and how do you get them?
A:
Followers are a very minor quirk of the forum system that Smogon uses. Following someone is simply a way of seeing whether or not they are online more easily, as they appear on the index underneath the "Staff Online Now" list. Furthermore, you can use the news feed to see what the people you follow are doing around the forum, from when they change their avatar to what post they just "Liked". You don't gain or lose anything from having a lot of followers or following other people, but it can be a fun way to connect with other users and keep up with your friends on Smogon.

Q: Why do only some staff appear on the "Staff Online Now" list?
A:
The "Staff Online Now" list exclusively shows Super Moderators and Administrators. Furthermore, some staff members have their online visibility private, and they will not show up on the "Staff Online Now" list if that is the case.

Q: What is hyperlinking and how do you do it?
A:
Hyperlinking text or images means that you are assigning a URL to said text or image so that it redirects you to the URL when you click it. To hyperlink something, wrap URL tags around the text or image, like so:
[URL=URL HERE.com]text you want to hyperlink[/URL]
Alternatively, you can highlight the text or image, click the chain icon in the post format toolbar, and paste your link in the text box. This will automatically embed the link the selected content.

Q: How do you tag someone in a post?
A:
You can tag users by putting an "@" before their username, e.g.
@Username123 . In order to link to someone's profile, you can also use the member ID found at the end of the profile URL and place it between the following tags:
[USER=MEMBER ID HERE]Username[/USER]

So to link Quite Quiet's profile, it would look like the following:

[USER=196780]Quite Quiet[/USER]

However, unlike tags, this does not send them a notification.

Q: How do you get a name/ profile details change?
A:
You may post in this thread, and wait for a staff member to go through it.

Q: How do you post an image?
A:
If you have a URL ending in a valid file extension (.png, .jpeg, .gif, etc.), you can paste it within [IMG][/IMG] tags. This will embed an image in your post. Alternatively, you can click the portrait icon in the post toolbar and paste your link there, which automatically embeds your image in a post.

Q: How do you change your avatar?
A:
Click on your username in the top right corner of the index and hover over your current avatar in the dropdown menu. If you click the "Edit" button in the pop-up, you can upload an image from your computer to Smogon. You can also click on your avatar directly if you are viewing your own profile. Furthermore, if you have a Gravatar account, you can simply input your email and activate your Gravatar on Smogon.

Q: How do you private message someone?
A:
On Smogon, "private messages" are just known as conversations, and you can start them with multiple people at once! To do so, hover over the "Inbox" button in the top right corner of the index and click "Start a new conversation". In the new window, type your participants in the first box; if you have more than one person you want to send a private message to, separate their usernames with a comma (,). In the next box, you can choose a title for the conversation. In the last box, just type your message, then click "Start a Conversation" and your PM will be sent.

Q: What is a "CT"?
A:
"CT" is an abbreviation for "custom title", the term the Smogon forum uses to identify the text underneath a member's username and avatar in their postbit. Regular members don't have the ability to edit their CT, but after becoming a badgeholder (a member that's been awarded a badge for their on-site contributions), a member can freely edit their CT. There are some cases in which non-badgeholders have a CT, such as if a member gets a username change and the CT is "formerly [their old username]", or if they have Nitro Boosted the official Smogon Discord server.

Q: How do you post a YouTube video?
A:
To post a video, all you have to do is take the part of a YouTube URL after the "v=" and put it in [media=youtube][/media] tags. For example, to post this video, you should take what's at the end (1yw1Tgj9-VU) and place it between the aforementioned tags, like so: [media=youtube]1yw1Tgj9-VU[/media]. You can also use the media section of the post format toolbar.

Q: How do you use hide tags?
A:
Hide tags, or "spoiler tags", as they're referred to on other boards, are exactly what they sound like: a hidden message. These hidden messages will appear with an orange background a gray text box which will either say "Show Hide" or "Example (open)". The code to create this box is [HIDE][/HIDE] or [HIDE=Example][/HIDE] alternatively. If left without an equal sign, the box's title will simply be Hide. The example area is where to put your hide tag's title; for example, a tag for all Gen 1 Pokemon would be [HIDE=Gen 1][/HIDE].

Q: How do you quote a post?
A:
Clicking on 'Reply' (located on the bottom right of someone's post) will automatically quote the post for you. [quote] Message [/quote] will also quote the post, but it won't tag the user of the post. You can click "Reply" on multiple posts to respond to more than one quote at once. You can also highlight parts of a user's message and click on the "Reply" tag that shows up to only quote specific portions.

Q: What is a VM?
A:
VM is a "Visitor Message" and is the equivalent to posting on somebody's wall for Facebook, or any social media along those lines. This is where easy interactions and communication will occur. Every user has a page for VMs, but privacy settings can be set to turn this ability off. To do exactly this, click on your name in the top right corner of the forum index, then click on "Privacy" and adjust the setting next to "Allow users to post messages on your profile page". Simply clicking on a user's name will pull up this page and where it says "Write a message" is where the post will go when this privacy setting is not activated.

Q: What are badges and what do they do?
A:
Badges are rewarded to users that contribute to the site. Having a badge allows you to have a larger filesize avatar and access to a discussion board for contributors to the community. More information about badges and how to earn them can be found here. A list of all of Smogon's badgeholders can be found here.

Q: What are trophy points?
A:
Trophy points are part of Xenforo, the forum software Smogon uses. There is currently no use for them.

Q: Where can I find damage calculations?
A:
You can find the most recently updated damage calculator here.

Q: Where can I trade Pokemon?
A:
The primary place on Smogon to find others to trade Pokemon with would be the Wi-Fi section, as there's tons of shops there to choose from, and quick/minor trade can be posted in this thread. If you want live interaction with other traders/breeders, you can check out the Wi-Fi room on Pokemon Showdown! Remember, hacking is strictly frowned upon on Smogon and most places promoting otherwise legitimate trade practices. Have some integrity.

Q: How do I see past Smogon bans/suspect tests?
A:
There is a listing of threads that contain past suspect tests in the Blind Voting forum, but there's no currently existing compendium of suspect tests or bans for most tiers in generations prior to Generation 8, but a full list of tiering decisions made this generation can be found here.

If you can't find the answer you're looking for above, then we encourage you to use this thread!

Hey, I was wondering if I could ask if and how I could start up my own metagame with altered Pokemon stats and abilities. Maybe something like what Radical Red has?

I already posted on here but it didn't get resolved so here it goes again.

I have an old account that I don't have access to, I made it when I was a gradeschooler so the stuff I said on there was stupid. I don't want it associated with the name I use online so if I could get it resolved to have the account deleted that would be nice.

I have a username on showdown with the same name and they were made around the same time so hopefully I can get that scrubbed. Thanks.

Not sure if this is the right thread to mention this/come with this idea, but a feature to see what timezone another user is using would be nice to have just to speed up scheduling for tours a tiny bit. Would preferably show up in the about tab as well as on the same line as a users age and location when you open the profile of said user. A start to this idea has already been made, so not sure what would stop this idea.

xf's implementation is kind of useless here; the syntax to add it to about sections on profile pages does exist (though i can't figure out how to incorporate the privacy setting and am not sure if it's even a xenforo feature rather than a relic from a prior forum software, and adding any location-related info without giving ppl the option to opt out is obviously not happening), but the variable is stored as the location not the number. e.g. EST would display as "America/New York" rather than as GMT-5 so it would really not make timezone conversions any easier at all. changing it to display numbers instead would require a pretty involved programming change if it's possible at all, not to mention it would actually introduce different issues because the user setting (rightfully) does not account for DST. i.e. this time of the year EST is actually GMT-4 not -5 unlike what the forum setting would say, whereas e.g. sydney time is GMT+10 in accordance with the forum setting, so people using the display to convert would be off by one hour. and by the time EST is GMT-5 again sydney would have changed to GMT+11 while still displaying as GMT+10, so the same issue would occur again the other way around.

im not against looking into this further per se but idt there's a good way around the above issues personally + it would be low prio either way. if users rly want to indicate their timezone on their profile the best option for now would be to put it in their location field.

Just curious, is it possible to add gradient text in messages?
n it's not
