Lol no really, actually serious I would only ever run either of those two with dark gems. Gems are some of the best items in the game, and my dark gem krookodile I used this year hit so many people by surprise.
The gem gave it 100% OHKOs on stuff like musharna, reuniclus, jellicent, and even gave a good shot at OHKO on stuff like less bulky tornadus/thundurus. With tyranitar it's even better since you're getting even more power off the gem. Also chople berry is overrated and terrible, always has been except on scrafty and hydreigon.

I'm pretty sure speed doesn't matter at all as it cancels all weather effects while a cloud nine pokemon is on the field.
Cloud Nine doesn't get rid of the weather, it just suppresses it. Once the Cloud Nine mon leaves the field, the original weather's effects immediately come back.
Enjoy your Tyranitar getting OHKO'd by Hitmontop simply looking at it I guess...
Cloud Nine question (yes I am too lazy to quote):
Cloud Nine does not actually remove the current weather effect, it simply nullifies the weather while the Cloud Nine Pokemon is on the field (just like Air Lock). You will even see the message "Rain is falling on the field", for example, but Thunder will still have 70% accuracy and Water and Fire-type attacks will have normal power (among other effects). As soon as the Cloud Nine Pokemon is removed from the battlefield, the weather will begin taking effect again.
Does cloud9 stop swift swim from triggering?
cloud 9 negating weather is pretty much like the weathers not there. You see it turn by tun but thats just animations. So basically yes.
I tried out a Prankster Thundurus with Rain Dance to counter weather starters. I didn't have to always rely on sending out Politoed or even using him for the battle, so it was nice to throw off opponents who would predict Politoed as my lead. You can technically apply the same strategy for Sunny Day; for the most part, teams I see only have one way to start up weather.
You could look at the VGC 2011 Analyses and RMTs on this site or on Skarmbliss.com. There are also a bunch of helpful people you can talk to on the IRC channels for both sites. It can also be helpful to watch battle videos from VGCs to get a feel for what sort of teams work well.
As far as practicing, you can use the Skarmbliss VGC Pokemon Online server, but most people there will be playing with the 2012 rules. You could also play GBU Free battles and hope you are matched up against someone who is also trying to practice with 2011 rules.
I'm trying to run some damage calculations... what is the most common item for Kingdra - Life Orb or Haban Berry?
Well it depends. Do you want raw power, or survivabilty. Haban ensures you a non gem boosted dragon pulse/claw(not sure about meteor) will not ohko, though your 1000x faster than these dragons so, You'll usually be the one koing them. I suggest LO,
Amoonguss, Chandelure, Hydreigon, Jellicent, Terrakion, Thundurus, Tornadus, Whimsicott. That's mostly what I saw during the last season. I'm expecting a lot of TerraCott since it's an easy but fairly effective strategy for inexperienced players.
