League of Legends: Let's Talk About uhhh??

I read that on Reddit when I woke up this morning (8 PM), and it really surprised me. They seemed to play so tightly -- even if they've played with each other a lot, live communication is still a massive advantage in this setting. There were a few times where Wickd was narrowly too late with his ult, but it happens, so I honestly couldn't tell lol

If they were talking and had no headphones on, playing without game sound is still horrific :( Had to do it in the past and I felt so disoriented and couldn't hear anything coming at me.

Draven so fun my first game with him was a 20-minute surrender with support malphite who steals CS and jungle maokai who literally never ganked

At least I pushed Varus' shit in both times he actually thought he could kill me.

at lan, the headsets were impractical/impossible to use and as the play caller and support i was hoarse by the end of every game. it is NOT pleasant and it is a huge disadvantage

The MLG admins really need to rethink their process, I think. They're so focused on being on time and seeming professional and official that they've lost site of what actually makes things professional and official: having fair matches. I'm not sure saving 5 minutes is a very good trade for people playing without communication or not being able to go to the fucking restroom. No one wants matches to go down like that, including the opposing team in both cases.

That said, I'm kinda impressed by how well this tournament has done at seeding teams considering the format. With no group round and the original seeding not being based on much, the standings we'll end up with here are pretty representative of how strong teams are right now for the most part, IMO. Not over yet, but for reference...

1st: TSM/Dig/CLG
2nd: TSM/Dig/CLG
3rd: Dig/CLG
4th: Dynamic
5th:CLG EU, Fnatic
7th: Orbit, Curse
9th: EG, Curse EU, Goose, SK
13th: LgN, TGF, vVv, 4Not
17th: Redact, MRN, Wolf Pack

There's a few surprises: Orbit and Dynamic finished a little higher than most people expected, while Curse, EG, and maybe CLG.EU finished lower, but for the most part I'm surprised at how "correctly" this turned out. I think Dynamic probably really are as good as their finish and once they get a lot more experience and stop throwing games away they'll likely be finishing that high or better all the time. EG got a rough draw, and the whole bathroom thing didn't help, so that might not be representative; same with CLG.EU and the comms, though I don't think them dropping to TSM and CLG.NA is too surprising. Pretty strong showing from both Fnatic and CLG.EU for the Euro teams(even SK probably exceeded most people's expectations, however much they've dropped). Will be eager to see the next event featuring Fnatic, CLG.EU, and top euro seed M5, who obviously didn't appear in this one, as well as the top NA teams to get a better idea of where everyone shakes out.

That is horrible just to imagine. I feel really bad for CLG.EU now. I read Snoopeh's post on Reddit, and while they did eventually get headsets, I'm sure the damage had already been done to their throats. :X

I was speaking from a "ranked/tournament" standpoint, not a fun one. You can do well with any champion, they just aren't as consistent.

But...these matches at MLG. God it's amazing.

I'm loving these graves ults. Snipe, snipe, snipe!

that was one long as tournament but grats on tsm. but really the best thing about that was phreaks chinstrap :3

Grats TSM for the epic win through the long series (except you regi, for spamming Karthus every game in the finals -____-) but I gotta give a nod to CLG for finally showing out there that they are not as bad as a lot of people are making them out to be. Shame voyboy wasn't there but regardless this just places CLG back on track and becoming scarier than ever.

Kayle/Karthus/Nocturne triad was frightening to watch. Regi's hyperaggressive play becomes immensely scary combined with Kayle's ult, and Karthus and Noct placed tons of global pressure. I do wonder why CLG didnt ban out Kayle or Karthus in one of their games though.

Overall:
It was a good game, both teams played hard

Also Phreak looks scary now.

6 straight games + however many games tsm played before the finals of KARTHUS ONLY REGINALD MARATHON is more than enough of that dude for me .-.

Shouldn't fix what isn't broken, maybe if you played the game for a living you'd understand why he choose to pick a champion he was really good at.

It's more on CLG.NA for not banning it after seeing him play it so many times.

He didn't say anything about nerfing, he just said he was tired of seeing it so much.

I didn't say anything about nerfing either, what's wrong with playing your strongest champion over and over again?

Nobody banned it from him, just because you think it's boring doesn't mean it wasn't the best decision for their team.

He definitely played more than just Karthus.

Meanwhile, for something that isn't a dumb overreaction....

The new free rotation is up on the Korean site, and these are what we have:

Corki
Garen
Jax
Miss Fortune
Rammus
Ryze
Singed
Skarner
Taric
Xerath

I think it's debatable if it was the best decision for their team, but that was some of what was interesting about TSM's games in general. They had the same kind of thing in reverse in most of their matches where until the last BO3 against CLG they left Shen hoping who kind of has a similar presence for most teams (strong in all parts of game limits opponents plays due to global presence). Shen, obviously, is considered to be a stronger character than Karthus by most people, but TSM figured that they could handle it and left it open. In both cases, part of why TSM allowed/was allowed the character was because it enabled counterlanes (Dryus playing Kayle, Kennen and Olaf against Shen, Jiji getting Kassadin and Cassiopeia(though TSM never allowed the hardest counter, Ahri, interestingly)) for the team without the character and because the team in question thought they could handle it. You could argue whether or not it was the right choice both ways, since there's evidence for both choices: TSM cruised to the finals allowing Shen but lost the first BO3 in big part because of Hotshot and Hazzard on Shen and banned him in the final BO3, and CLG obviously ended up losing to Regi's Karthus, though they wound up 3-3 in games against TSM so it was awfully close.

I think Karthus is just genuinely an uninteresting character to watch because of the nature of his abilities (though Regi hit some really nice walls) but it was a great mesh with some of the other things TSM likes to do with protecting the AD and general aggressive play combined with stuff like Kayle and Nocturne.

Also man another free rotation where I own them all this is some BS

TSM was definitely one step ahead of the competition in that regard, CLG.EU/NA were their only true obstacles and both produced fantastic games.

Karthus is just a really safe choice in general, his farming abilities are some of the best in the game. That coupled with his enormous AOE damage output + wall CC + global ultimate makes him a really strong competitive choice.

Coupling Kayle's ult with Kennen & Karthus is what threw it over the wall though, that's just amazing team composition.

AD:

I was most surprised by how many games Graves saw (due in part to Chaox and LiftLift) His smokescreen is actually an incredibly effective AOE cc. Since this was pre-nerfs we'll have to see if the same trend continues.

Jungle:

Nautilus was definitely the most surprising out of the tournament though, watching plays from both Hotshot and Oddone with him was awesome. I can see Nautilus play going up a ton here in the next few weeks. Starting to realize how strong that CC kit is.

Corki
Garen

Miss Fortune
Rammus
Ryze
Singed
Skarner
Taric
Xerath

I don't like that free week.

Ryze > Xerath
Singed > Garen
Jax > Singed
Corki > MF
Skarner > Rammus
Taric all by his lonesome.

Though, I do miss the excitement of free week champions and getting to play something you normally couldn't. Owning all the champions takes away that sort of "thrilling" experience.

Corki - :D
Garen - -.-. Well maybe Walrein will pop out his Doran's Ring Garen for laughs idk. I've seen Mana Potion and Clarity Garens before, and am expecting more trolls around .__.
Jax - Just bought recently D:<
Miss Fortune - Sux
Rammus - Ok
Ryze - ...
Singed - I've never played Singed except on the very first week or so I began playing lol when he was free. And that was back when I stacked Phages and Madred's Razors on everything...
Skarner - Worth trying ofc
Taric - Another support to try out is never bad.
Xerath - Being a lightning mage gives Xerath some cool points so I suppose. He doesn't really feel like an interesting character though.

I suggest learning Singed. He is so much fun to play. Pushing is so fast/fun, team fights you feel invincible and powerful, last hitting is hard for the first few levels but once your poison does enough to last hit with it you can get all of the minions. Just a very enjoyable experience.

this isnt a legend of zelda game lol, you dont need to bold words to emphasize the important parts

but anyways i think what surprised me moreso than graves was how urgot has turned into a 100% pick/ban champion over the last few months, pretty much solely because of how strong the brutalizer -> frozen heart build is (aka a build that still dominates other ADs hard without falling off as hard as the old manamune build). i guess the same thing happened with corki too though; even though neither champion actually got any changes, almost every other AD carry getting nerfed really put them both into the spotlight along with graves/kogmaw

nautilus rising in popularity is really cool too. from the streams i watch sometimes, it seemed like he was getting a lot of use lately in solo queue but im glad hes getting used a lot in organized play too since i find him to be really fun to both play and watch
