Project OM Mashup Megathread

POKEAAABILITIES
What is PokeAAAbilities?

PokeAAAbilities is a mashup of Pokebilities and Almost Any Ability, meaning that Pokemon have access to all of their native abilities, plus an ability of their choice, all at the same time!

The following Pokemon are not useable because they have banned native abilities:
Arena Trap: Diglett, Dugtrio, Trapinch
Moody: Glalie, Octillery, Remoraid, Snorunt
Shadow Tag: Gothita, Gothitelle, Gothorita, Wobbuffet, Wynaut
Wonder Guard: Shedinja

Ninetales-Alola and Vulpix-Alola, while not outright banned, unfortunately have a banned combination of abilities (Snow Warning + Snow Cloak), and are not useable in this tier.

Q. Can you give a Pokemon a second copy of an ability it already has?
A. No. The game will assume you just forgot to give it an ability.

Q. How does 2 Ability Clause work?
A. 2 Ability Clause only applies to the chosen abilities (like in Almost Any Ability). For example, a team with Alakazam, Suicune, and Bisharp does not violate 2 Ability Clause, because although all three Pokemon have Inner Focus, it is not their chosen ability. Note that a special variant of 2 Ability Clause, dubbed 'Regenerator Clause', prevents more than 2 Pokemon on the same team from having Regenerator as either a base or chosen ability. The reasoning for this is explained here.

Q. How do Impostor, Mummy, Neutralizing Gas, Trace, and Wandering Spirit work?
A. Good question, and it depends on if they're the base ability or the chosen ability:
Ability:When used as the Base AbilityWhen used as the Chosen Ability
MummyChanges a random ability, does not work on pivot movesChanges random ability to Mummy
TraceCopies random abilityCopies random ability
Wandering SpiritSwaps random abilitySwaps chosen ability
ImpostorFailsWorks as normal, copies all abilities of target*
Neutralizing GasNegates all abilitiesAllows user's abilities to activate first*
*Impostor and Neutralizing Gas are restricted, so only Ditto and Weezing may choose to run those abilities in their chosen slot.

Q. Why so many complex bans?
A. Much like the Other Metagame Shared Power, combining abilities on the same Pokemon can give us some terrifying results. Every one of these complex bans was selected because they dealt with their respective problems in the most efficient way. For example, neither Primordial Sea or Swift Swim are broken abilities by themselves (Rain teams are definitely viable here, but not overwhelming). However, Primordial Sea Kingdra is a nightmarish win condition that invalidates every other form of speed control and warps the entire metagame around itself. Hence, by banning the combination of Primordial Sea + Swift Swim, Pokemon that use either ability and aren't broken aren't affected, while the actual abusers of the strategy are nerfed properly.

Q. Why is ________ banned?
A. Some of these bans can seem confusing or nonsensical at first, but trust me, there's a good reason for all of them. I've compiled a list of ban reasonings that can be found below:
:blacephalon: Blacephalon: Already banned in AAA, but now it gets Beast Boost.
:buzzwole: Buzzwole: Already banned in AAA, but now it gets Beast Boost.
:clefable: Clefable: The combination of Unaware and Magic Guard makes it nigh-impossible to break through. Combine this with Dauntless Shield to become the best physical wall, utility Pokemon, setup sweeper, and offensive juggernaut in the tier.
:conkeldurr: Conkeldurr: Banned in Pokebilities, but here it can run Triage for priority or Toxic Boost for even more absurd power.
:dracozolt: Dracozolt: Banned in Pokebilities, but here it can run various power-boosting abilities as well as No Guard to solve its accuracy issues.
:dragapult: Dragapult: Already banned in AAA, only further buffed by the addition of Clear Body and Infiltrator.
:gengar: Gengar: Already banned in AAA, banned here for the same reasons.
:kartana: Kartana: Do I really need to explain this one?
:mienshao: Mienshao: Reasoning explained here
:noivern: Noivern: Does the exact same thing that it did in AAA, but in a format where Silvally-Electric/Steel can't run Assault Vest.
:obstagoon: Obstagoon: Reasoning explained here
:pangoro: Pangoro: Reasoning explained here
:perrserker: Perrserker: Reasoning explained here in a fantastic post by Don Vascus
:porygon-z: Porygon-Z: Already banned in Pokebilities. We didn't even bother testing this thing in PokeAAA, very clearly busted.
:rillaboom: Rillaboom: Choice Band Tough Claws Rillaboom was the best and most common wallbreaker and revenge killer in the meta. Grassy Glides from this monster would commonly OHKO neutral offensive Pokemon and easily picked off threats who resisted it after some chip. Rillaboom was frankly oppressive, and could even blow through its checks like Corviknight with Superpower and Knock Off after chip.
:tapu bulu: Tapu Bulu: Reasoning explained here
:tapu lele: Tapu Lele: Reasoning explained here
:weavile: Weavile: Already banned in AAA, and did the exact same (oppressive) thing here

Prankster: While at first seeming fairly innocuous, Prankster makes defensive Pokemon like Toxapex, Quagsire, and Blissey into unbreakable monsters. Unlike AAA, where Prankster comes at the opportunity cost of a different ability, these Pokemon have access to Prankster and their already fantastic base abilities at the same time, allowing them to negate their awful speed stats and gain an advantage over any Pokemon that can't solidly 2HKO them.

Regenerator Clause: Before Regenerator Clause was implemented, several teams were made that featured 3-4 Pokemon with Regenerator as a base ability (usually a combination of Slowbro, Toxapex, Tangrowth, Amoonguss, or Tornadus-T) plus two more Pokemon with Regenerator as a chosen ability. These cores were literally unbreakable and could easily lead into an endless battle if two of them fought.

Unburden: There were two devastating types of Unburden sweepers prior to the ban: Terrain and Power Herb. Terrain sweepers (who used the Terrain Seeds) were very easy to fit on teams as a win condition thanks to the lack of opportunity cost to run Terrain Surge abilities. Pokemon like Nihilego and Celesteela could use Power Herb + Meteor Beam to immediately gain +1 SpAtk and +2 Speed while simultaneously firing off a powerful 120 base power move in the process. If Meteor Beam KO'd a Pokemon, Nihilego/Celesteela would get to +2/+2 in a single move.

Big thanks to Instruct for helping us simplify the tournament code!
Effective immediately, Clefable, Conkeldurr, and Prankster have been banned, and Pokemon may no longer use Regenerator and Multiscale/Shadow Shield together.
  • :clefable: Clefable is an overwhelmingly centralizing defensive and utility Pokemon that has been the subject of noticeable community backlash. Simultaneous access to Unaware and Magic Guard prevent Clefable from being broken by setup sweepers and passive damage, which are two of its best checks in most formats. For an additional ability, Clefable has numerous excellent options, with the most prominent being Dauntless Shield and Regenerator, both of which make it even harder to take down. Very few Pokemon are able to deal with Clefable; Setup Sweepers with Mold Breaker are generally the best option, but those can simply be switched out on and dealt with by teammates.
  • :conkeldurr: Conkeldurr hits stupidly hard. Guts, Sheer Force, and Iron Fist are all excellent base abilities that greatly increase Conkeldurr's power (Thunder Punch and Ice Punch become 117 base power coverage moves), and on top of that it gets to choose another ability. The two most dangerous abilities are by far Toxic Boost and Triage. Toxic Boost Conkeldurr hits an effective 936 attack once it has been poisoned by a Toxic Orb, and from there it can OHKO or 2HKO every pokemon in the metagame. Triage is quite dangerous as well, as Conkeldurr can easily sweep teams with a +3 priority 90 base power Guts-boosted Drain Punch.
+1 252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Corviknight: 357-420 (89.2 - 105%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
+1 252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Thunder Punch (117 base power) vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 300-354 (76.1 - 89.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Thunder Punch vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 195-230 (49.4 - 58.3%) -- 68% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • :sableye: Prankster enables several overwhelming defensive Pokemon such as Toxapex, Quagsire, and Amoonguss. In most AAA formats, Prankster comes at the opportunity cost of not running other key defensive abilities like Unaware and Regenerator, an opportunity cost not present in this format due to Pokebilities. Prankster severely limits counterplay to its users, as their normal weakness of speed has been removed. Standard counterplay like 2HKOing these mons with a faster wallbreaker is not possible with Prankster recovery moves, and having priority utility moves also lets these Pokemon be more disruptive to the opposing team.
  • :lunala: The combination of Regenerator and Shadow Shield is incredibly overwhelming, and makes defensive Pokemon with Regenerator (Toxapex, Reuniclus, Slowbro, etc.) incredibly hard to take down. All of these Pokemon become nigh-unkillable with the combination, and with Heavy Duty Boots or Magic Guard to ignore chip and hazard damage, they become even more unkillable.

Additionally, here is a list of things the council will be looking into in the future:
  • Toxapex: While the Prankster ban may keep it under control, Toxapex still has plenty of excellent options available (Mold Breaker, Volt Absorb, Magic Bounce, etc.) that let it wall a significant portion of the metagame.
  • Regenerator Cores: While 2 Ability Clause prevents you from giving Regenerator to more than 2 Pokemon per team, it does not apply to Pokemon who natively have Regenerator. As a result of this, many teams have been seen running upwards of 4 Regenerator Pokemon, who can easily shrug off damage while forming both potent defensive and offensive cores. Depending on how things go, we may end up limiting the number of Regenerator mons useable on a team.
  • Tapu Lele: This mon hits stupidly hard. Psychic and Moonblast blow through anything lacking a 4x resistance, and Focus Blast rounds out its coverage nicely. However, it's limited by its poor bulk and reliance on prediction to deal damage.
  • Reuniclus: Magic Guard and Regenerator is a potent ability combination, allowing Reuniclus to make use of abilities like Sheer Force and Psychic Surge (as well as being the primary user of the now-banned Shadow Shield).

4/21/21: Perrserker, Pangoro, Tapu Lele, Zamazenta-Crowned, Hypnosis, Sing and Sleep Powder banned; Keldeo and Zeraora unbanned; Regenerator limited to 2 Pokemon per team

6/29/21: Rillaboom and Blacephalon banned

4/30/22: Massive overhaul following the Tournament Code fix and the LCOTM announcement. Changes include new sample teams, removal of outdated samples, VR update, and several bans listed below.
Bans: Magnet Pull, Noivern, Weavile, Regenerator + Emergency Exit / Wimp Out.

Thanks everyone for reading, and we hope you enjoy PokeAAAbilities!

STAB'n Mega Announcement
:ss/terrakion:

Terrakion has been restricted from holding mega stones in [Gen 8]STABmons Mix and Mega via council voting!
Players (Council)WMARAggrometaileDerpyBoiTranquilityZephyr Dragon Lord
VoteNo restrictRestrictRestrictRestrictNo restrict

Reasoning:
Terrakion is one of the premier breakers as well as cleaners of SnM, having access to near perfect coverage, great attack stat, Swords Dance and good speed tier. A few switchins like Tapu Fini, Toxapex, Swampert and Slowbro either fear taking moves after an attack boost, or can be chipped over the course of the game so that Terrakion can secure 2HKO, if not OHKO on them. Recently, the Lopunnite No Retreat sets have also popped up, giving Terrakion the ability to be immune to intimidate and also threaten some of its "checks" like Diancite Tapu Lele, Urshifu Rapid Strike and Runerigus, and allows it to blow a hole into the opposing team. Its resistance to rock and good speed tier allows it to be pivoted into a good number of mons and threaten back with a KO or by just setting up with Swords Dance or No Retreat. The flexibility with sets makes it almost impossible to cover for Terrakion. The main drawback of Terrakion is its weakness to PixiSpeed, which is laughably easy to answer by just stacking up 2 Diamond Storm Defense boost, but those mons literally cannot switchin, meaning teams would have to sacrifice a mon every time Terrakion comes in. Moreover, every team runs counterplay to Extreme Speed. The ongoing SnM SSNL also showcased a few battles where Terrakion seemed unhealthy. The council has decided to restrict it due to its power, very limited counterplay and restrictions it places on teambuilding.

Tagging CringeMeta to update the tour code and urkerab to implement this on ROM.

Playing Pokebilities AAA and I made this fun set
Trevenant @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Cheek Pouch
EVs: 244 HP / 12 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Curse
- Leech Seed
- Toxic
I guess desolate land would work too

Berserk seems to be failing to work in pokebilities AAA when moltres-galar picks another ability, I played some games and encountered this problem multiple times. I forgot to save those replays when playing, but if I happen to encounter this problem again hopefully I'll remember to save the replay and add it here

I've also been using a lot of Moltres-Galar, and Berserk seems to be working properly for me too. Maybe it's specific to the ability you gave it?

Thanks for the tests! I personally gave moltres-g serene grace and i think the malfunctioning games had enemies using sheer force. However I haven't encountered this problem in a long time (lol moltres-g never went below 50% in my games after i sent the last post) and yeah maybe it was just a random bug. The bisharp one concerns me a lot more now. Thanks for the help and testing!

I might be completely wrong about this (I don't know mechanics), but I think that sheer force boosted moves are intended to interact this way with berserk, iirc it also does this with emergency exit/wimp out and eject button, maybe other things idk

You are correct
Sheer Force ignores activating abilities Wimp Out, Pickpocket, Emergency Exit, Color Change and Berserk while hitting the opponent with a Sheer Force affected move.

Tier: Pokebilities Mix and Mega

Core: :rillaboom:+:magnezone:

Core type: Offensive

Description: Rillaboom is one of the strongest offensive Pokemon in Poke MnM currently, with its powerful STAB priority move in Grassy Glide coming off of 205 Attack. The main counter to Rillaboom is Steel-type pokemon such as Skarmory, which Magnezone can trap and kill, and in turn Rillaboom threatens Pokemon like Blissey who are able to switch into Magnezone.Lucarionite Magnezone is also a powerful wallbreaker even if it doesn't trap a Steel-type Pokemon. Analytic and Adaptability make sure that every Pokemon switching in take large amounts of damage.

Let's talk about Alakazam in Pokebilities AAA
:alakazam:

:ss/alakazam:
Alakazam @ Life Orb
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Expanding Force
- Nasty Plot
- Focus Blast/Dazzling Gleam
- Psyshock/Dazzling Gleam/Shadow Ball

I think everyone who plays Pokebilities AAA has seen this thing and fears it. The classic life orb set has no real counters, with options to defeat any pokémon who think they're safe. Shadow ball beats opposing Alakazam, and Dhelmise on the switch, Focus Blast can beat specially defensive steels trying to tank expanding force and dark types, Dazzling Gleam can reliably check dark types (instead of missing them), and psyshock can be used to break through Blissey and Chansey.

However, all of these checks can be defeated even if Alakazam isn't carrying the correct move: Blissey and Chansey must have a way to stop Alakazam such as thunder wave or unaware to avoid being nasty plotted on, then getting 2HKOd, dark types are often slower, and can be beaten with either dazzing gleam or focus blast, or by wearing them down. (Especially as the common dark types in the tier, such as Zarude and Krookodile, don't run/don't get recovery).

:ss/alakazam:
Alakazam @ Focus Sash
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Expanding Force
- Nasty Plot
- Focus Blast/Dazzling Gleam
- Psyshock/Dazzling Gleam/Shadow Ball/Counter

Due to Alakazam's incredible speed tier and use of psychic surge, it's then very difficult to revenge kill. A fast scarfer or grassy glider can come in and chase Alakazam out, but that's where Alakazam's next set comes in: Focus Sash. At the cost of a bit amount of power, Alakazam can survive any one hit with focus sash. This is especially brutal as there's no way to know which set you're facing beforehand, as they almost always run identical movesets and magic guard stops the sash from being broken by hazards or passive damage. With this sash on, Alakazam can either abuse it to safely set up nasty plot against a team without an answer to +2 Alakazam, or can bluff life orb, take out a pokémon with expanding force, then pick up a second KO against the revenge killer.

:ss/alakazam:
Alakazam @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid/Modest Nature
- Expanding Force
- Dazzling Gleam/Focus Blast
- Psyshock/Focus Blast
- Trick/Dazzling Gleam

The final set Alakazam runs is choice scarf. This completely shuts down most revenge killing options, allowing Alakazam to function excellently against offence, and running trick allows it to still be useful against stall, as it can trick away its scarf. This set sacrifices flexibility for the ability to beat opposing scarfers with ease, and pick up easy late game sweeps. Focus blast or dazzling gleam can defeat its checks with good prediction, then expanding force can sweep the rest. Even Blissey can still be 2HKOd with a bit of chip and/or hazard support, which leaves little hope for other non-resists. It's also quite easy to bluff life orb with this set, as Alakazam naturally outspeeds so much, so an when an offensive scarfer comes in to try and pick up momentum, you can surprise them by just finishing them off. For example, scarf Heatran is almost always 2HKOd by expanding force after rocks (assuming you don't nail it with focus blast on the switch).

Of course, Alakazam is frail, struggling to take physical hits from even fully defensive pokémon, meaning it requires a lot of support to hit the field safely. This support is not too hard to come by with excellent pivots such as teleport Slowbro, flip turn Swampert, U-turn Landorus-T, and more: and once this thing hits the field, you have to predict perfectly or something is going down (or something goes down anyway, because sometimes you can't outpredict the sheer power of expanding force). Minor moveset changes allow it to dominate pokémon who should otherwise check it, and scouting is hard when it blows by so much so easily. It even has defensive use against the broken triage users of the tier, able to switch into Kommo-o and Togekiss and scare them out instantly, or prevent Talonflame from spamming brave bird (before switching to a flare blitz resist). The fact Talonflame almost always runs Jolly is a testament to the power of Alakazam, as there are no other notable targets for a jolly flare blitz.

I was curious if and how Mimikyu might work in PokeAAAbilities, so I tested it out a bit, and it seems like chosen abilities work as expected while its Disguise is intact, but not after it's busted. Is the Busted form hard-coded to have its ability nullified, or does the additional ability just not carry over to the form change? I just thought it was an interesting interaction.

Added! Mudkip goat...

I thought we cannot give the same ability to two pokemons in the same team who don't naturally get them but I tried giving them and it shows it's valid, is this a bug or it's allowed?

seems like a weird bug, if you can replicate it and get the replay send it as a bug report here

Huh, I was able to replicate it when I posted about it, but it looks like I can't anymore, so if it was a bug it seems like it's already been fixed and now chosen abilities work correctly on Mimikyu both before and after the Disguise is busted. Thank you for pointing me to the right place to report that, though!

Eggs

some days, you just can't get rid of an egg
Hi everyone, Eggs here with one last big PokeAAAbilities update!

Alakazam, Zapdos-Galar, and Quick Claw have been banned, while Serene Grace, Triage, and Quick Draw have been restricted! Tapu Bulu and Pangoro have been Unbanned

:alakazam: Alakazam: Arguably the strongest wallbreaker in the meta, thanks to its great Speed tier, monstrous Special Attack, and excellent coverage moves, Alakazam has been dominating the tier during its time on the LCOTM ladder. A great post by Discordual says most of what the Council wanted to say, although we should also note that Alakazam could viably run No Guard and Sheer Force to wildly increase the power and reliability of its coverage moves, at the cost of losing out on Expanding Force. Frankly, Alakazam has become too much, and is now banned due to its lack of reliable counters.

:zapdos-galar: Zapdos-Galar: 'Gapdos', as we normally refer to it, is arguably the second best wallbreaker in the meta. It runs mostly the same sets as AAA Gapdos, but with the noted benefit of having Defiant to punish Defog and Intimidate users. Unlike in AAA, Gapdos can't be checked by Corviknight, as Corv's Mirror Armor will reflect the defense drop from Thunderous Kick, giving Gapdos +2 attack upon use. Fighting / Flying is a fantastic offensive typing with very few resistances present in the tier (Aegislash and Zapdos were the only defensive checks available). Gapdos could be checked via Dauntless Shield Slowbro and Toxapex, as they resist Fighting and have Regenerator so Gapdos can't wear it down, but beyond those Pokemon not much could check it. Gapdos's absurd power and lack of reliable checks to it has warranted it a ban.

:slowbro-galar: Quick Claw and Quick Draw: RNG is uncompetitive, and Quick Claw + Quick Draw is among the most effective ways to abuse it. Thanks to the unique mechanics of PokeAAAbilities, this combination has a much lower opportunity cost to it, and Pokemon are still able to run other abilities while using Quick Draw. Most notably, Jirachi could utilize this 44% chance to go first alongside a 60% chance to flinch with Iron Head. The post in which Quick Claw and Quick Draw were banned in STAAABmons explains a bit more into the problems with these mechanics and RNG in general.

:togekiss: Serene Grace: Unlike in other AAA formats, Serene Grace can be used alongside other abilities. The biggest reason to not run Serene Grace in these formats is simply because you would have to run it over a better ability, but that's no longer as much of an issue in PokeAAAbilities. Quite a few Pokemon have been running around abusing Serene Grace, most noticeably Slowbro-Galar, so we've decided to restrict it due to its uncompetitive nature.

:comfey: Triage: The best source of priority in the metagame. Any Pokemon that gets STAB on a damage-dealing recovery move (and even some that don't) is able to run a viable Triage set thanks to the +3 priority outpacing the many other sources of priority in the tier. Recently, more of these Pokemon have become problematic, such as the recently-banned Tapu Bulu and the up-and-coming Togekiss. Additionally, with Alakazam's ban removing the best anti-priority tech in the meta, Triage users will become even more powerful with the decline of Psychic Terrain. Instead of continuing to ban Triage users, the council has decided to restrict the ability.

:tapu bulu: Tapu Bulu and Pangoro :pangoro: These Pokemon were banned primarily for their powerful Triage sets, have been unbanned. The other two infamous Triage abusers, Buzzwole and Conkeldurr, will stay banned due to their other sets being far too powerful for the meta.

The council also voted on Heracross and a full ban on Magnet Pull, but both remain free.

:heracross: Heracross, despite its Power and Speed, suffers from a multitude of issues that prevent it from being banworthy (or even A tier). Being forced to run Flame Orb severely limits its longevity, and using Toxic Orb to abuse Toxic Boost only furthers this problem. Heracross also suffers from major 4 Moveslot Syndrome, as it is forced to pick between its STABs, Facade, Knock Off, Protect, Swords Dance, EQ, etc. and it requires each of those moves to overcome a set of checks. Additionally, Rocky Helmet and Iron Barbs (an often a combination of the two) are incredibly common, meaning when Heracross does get to hit something, it often takes as much as 30% of its health in damage while it does so. Heracross's longevity issues are only exacerbated by the omnipresence of Priority in the meta, even resisted hits of which can often KO after the large amount of chip Heracross has taken.

:magnezone: Magnezone is the only legal user of Magnet Pull (don't bring up Magneton or Meltan, I will cyberbully you), and is the only trapper present in the metagame. Magnezone is already a good Pokemon off the merits of its typing, Sturdy, and Analytic, and has a multitude of sets it can use effectively, even if it doesn't end up trapping any Pokemon. This is particularly relevant because Magnezone is often unable to trap the Steel types of the tier. Ferrothorn resists Electric moves, and thanks to Iron Barbs (and often Rocky Helmet and Rough Skin), can often with a 1v1 with Iron Defense + Body Press Magnezone, unless it's Magic Guard. Skarmory, which is locked to Stamina thanks to Weak Armor, can outspeed and 2HKO with Body Press, and Sturdy means that Skarmory will survive a Thunderbolt from full health and can hit back with a +1 Body Press unless Magnezone is Mold Breaker. Most importantly, Corviknight's most popular set by far is Volt Absorb, requiring Magnezone to run Mold Breaker to succesfully trap it. Mold Breaker Magnezone is an effective trapper, but it loses out on other great abilities like Levitate, Primordial Sea, Magic Guard, and Regenerator to accomplish that, and it can never actually trap all of the Steel types it wants to.

tagging Kris to implement
