Hey there! You may have seen me cite this before, but I decided to get a thread approved to have a place to try and crowdsource more resources I may have missed. So those in the loop with the RBY Community know that over the years, it's had a penchant for hopping around different websites. However, as a result of this, every time the community moved, it would "lose" resources. While oldheads may know where everything is, new players don't. Even then, it's a nightmare to sift through so many forums and tabs...so, as part of some work I've been doing on RBY 2k20 (modernizing old resources, historical documentation), I trawled various websites and forums the community would frequently use, and compiled them into one big spreadsheet. I tend to learn through contribution and amassing resources like this, so it helped me out a lot.

Some of these resources date back all the way to the late 90s! It felt interesting seeing all the threads from forums I lurked back in like, 2008 and stuff. Then there's stuff from before I was even born...or just a baby. Naturally, some of these old resources can (and will) be outdated, and mainly serve as a legacy source of information. On the flip side though, many of these hold up damn well, especially the Strategy Pokedex from Azure Heights. Even outdated resources can be used to bring back old strategies should they become relevant again.

As of September 2020, I've also started tracking RoA Spotlight and Community Choice Usage Stats. For those who don't know, these are special ladders that go up every month, one of which is decided by community vote. Since RBY sometimes crops up, and these are a nightmare to find otherwise, I've started putting them on my spreadsheet. These have some really cool OMs to look at, such as STABmons, or lower tiers. Since RBY OU receives new stats every month, I've left this out. If you want a good place to view RBY OU Usage Stats though, check out Porydex, which puts it into charts and a more readable format.

Let's go over some of the websites I cover here, as they all have some history.
  • Smogon
    • Needs no introduction. Smogon's resources date back all the way to 2005, a bit after it began moving from IRC I believe? I believe every single Smogon RBY Resource to date is covered on here, except maybe some very very old analyses that have since been replaced and lack forum records. However, I've since found a 2007 archive of the strategy dex which I've added to the hub, so you can still find them if need be. Some people play Pre-2011 UU, for instance, so the archive is a half-decent guide for that.
  • Pokemon Perfect
    • You may have seen this mentioned regarding the RBY Counter drama, but let's not get into that. Pokemon Perfect is a pretty big hub of activity for Past Gen metagames, with its own tiering and analysis system. Their tiers are surprisingly well-documented, with extensive contributions from members such as Lutra and Enigami. Their tourneys are pretty cool too, you should check em out!
  • RBY 2k20
    • A website that I've taken ownership of since I made this post! The place aims to be the "definitive RBY site", tiering tradebacks and trying to explore the game in more detail. Similar to Smogon, it also has its own Strategy Pokedex on-site featuring numerous obscure formats, as well as staples like OU. There are also regular tournaments on its PS Server, which can be accessed here. I'm planning on moving the content to a new website soon.
  • Pokemon Online
    • Man, I miss the days when PO was popular. If you're new to the community, well, PO is the second most popular battle simulator, though it's definitely in its twilight years and only goes up to Gen 7 now. It never affiliated itself with Smogon as Showdown did; Shoddy Battle was used up until 2012. I didn't remember there being analyses on PO Forums (similar to PP), but hey, they exist! This place carried on 2k10's tiering, from what I can see, and also was one of the instances of a Partial Trapping Suspect. I also got a blast of nostalgia with RBY 251...that was a cool PO mod.
  • RBY 2k10
    • You can call this the predecessor to 2k20, and you'd be right! This forum was closed down when Pokemon Perfect came to the forefront but had tons of RBY Resources. Unfortunately, there's many that aren't archived on WayBack, but I contacted some of the old staff a while ago to see if they can retrieve them. This was also the home of RBYPlus, another Gen 1 Mod for PO, I believe. Still not managed to get this going, though.
  • GameFAQs
    • Prior to the creation of more popular Pokemon Forums (and the rise of Smogon), GameFAQs was the central hub for RBY. While many, many old posts have been deleted due to some site goings-on, there are some surviving guides. Hipmonlee even managed to get some interesting old stuff relating to this. Would strongly recommend reading some of this, it's super interesting.
  • THE Alternative
    • Apparently, this is one of the first Pokemon Forums to ever have individual analyses for every RBY Pokemon, if not the first. The "THE" was capitalized for significance according to the old owner, GGFan. I couldn't find much outside of a teambuilding guide and analyses, which both give some insight into that decade's optimization: this place is old!
  • Azure Heights Forums
    • I believe that little Koffing icon on the tab for Smogon came from here? May be wrong. Anyway, this can be seen as Smogon's predecessor. It was one of the main competitive hubs for RBY, containing a very in-depth Pokedex for its time. It features accurate accuracy numbers, damage %s for Confusion, and more. It's really stood the test of time and maintains fairly good quality. If you want to learn about mechanics, this place generally hits the mark on everything. They also have an ancient battle simulator called Porygon's Big Show, which still works, albeit having all the old bugs!
There are also a few other sites that didn't have enough resources to put into their own sections, placed into an "Other Resources" category. There are also Google Sheets, YouTube playlists, Imgur tables and more that are placed there, so it's not like any of these are less important!

I'm fully open to adding more resources to the hub, regardless of source! Just let me know here or in DMs!

Woah, Pikacards is still online? That's a blast from the past...

There was a similar site I used to use when I first started out that listed pokemon by BSTs and had a good way to find pokemon that had combinations of moves. It had like a black background and white text, but I cant remember what it was called.

Oh yeah, it was the skill/stat finder! It's in the azureheights links, but apparently its not around any more.

Oh yeah, veekun has a pretty good pokedex too.

Ooooh, I seriously take that place for granted sometimes! Added it into the Other Resources sheet. Went and tacked on Cave of Dragonflies while I was at it, that place had some ancient info on Haze everyone forgot about...

The spreadsheet has received an update today! I decided to check out the past RBY Spotlight Ladder usage stats, as there's quite a few OMs and general history there. However, unlike regular ladders, these rarely receive active support on databases like Porydex, so they can be a nightmare to find. This puts it all into one area for you to find them.

Overall, I took these stats;
Many of these are quite interesting, as a good chunk are OU with various stipulations; namely No Tauros, No Big 4 and No Defense Boosting. There's also UU at various stages, which I believe should include times where Golem and Victreebel have dipped in and out of the tier. I believe there may be some more tiering changes there soon though. Ubers has also been put up multiple times, which should be interesting.

If there's any I missed, lemme know, as there isn't actually a whole archive for the Spotlight Ladders that go up. I would try to find tournament usage, but the forum search feature on here is as inconsistent as my thought process (very bad!) and I need to lay down in a dark room after laying eyes on the low ladder usage stats.

The RBY NU Stats from the September Ladder have been put onto the Index of Stats, so I added them to the Resource Hub. You can access them here along with everything else.

For easy access though, here are the 1630 Usage and Lead Statistics. It's rounded off a bit given my Google Sheets stuff but that's probably for the best. I couldn't put moveset usage into these given it's not the easiest to format, but if you want the 1630 stats for that, go here.

Small update!

I made a spreadsheet for Exeggcute's Explosion against the Pokemon on the NU Pre-Alpha Viability Rankings, as Sevi 7 and a few others were pondering its viability. It's been added to the Resource Hub under "Other Resources".

On average, Exeggcute will deal around 50% to a Pokemon without modifiers, which could make something like Super Fang Raticate work decently with it? Not sure how that would pan out in practice. It may be better to just use Rest or something instead for staying power, since the damage isn't that high. It has its place though, and some Pokemon do take quite a bit of damage.

EDIT: Using my sheet as a base, pacattacc also made a sheet for Gastly's, and Golem for OU and UU. These have been added to the hub accordingly.

With the RBY NU Spotlight Tour ending, I've added the stats graciously provided by ReeceHughes to the Resource Hub. They're in the notes on the Ladder stat pages.

EDIT: I also found some Uber Spotlight Tour Usage Stats from June-September by Kris, and added it appropriately. I believe that the Spotlight Tours don't go back further than this from a brief once-over.

More of a minor update, but for the more visual learners, it could be handy. They were originally for a video project I'm working on so it's easier to find footage, but they're actually great resources in their own right. Game analysis, in itself, is a skill. So, I chucked them on the resource hub under "Other Resources".

I produced a YouTube playlist of some RBY OU game analysis videos, totalling to over 150 videos. The list features a lot of GGFan's videos, as he archives his games pretty well, but there's stuff from Amaranth, Isa and Pokemon Perfect as well. However, players like Ortheore and BKC have also put stuff up, so it's far from one-sided. I have attempted to keep these to high-level games and tournament sets. Overall, there are literal days worth of footage in it.

Outside of this, on a more minor note, I made playlists of RBY Wi-Fi Battles, something that has had a small community for many years. I'd know, I played them up until late-2018ish. One YouTuber, Yus, has been doing these for 7 years. There's Stad1 and Stad0 as well, though these are more minor. There's a massive variety of formats played here, including official formats, it's kind of amazing. However, the skill level varies pretty widely, so I would say they're not amazing from a competitive perspective.

Not sure if I would update these, but if anyone has content they'd like adding, chuck me a message or something.

EDIT: Hipmonlee's prediction guide was also added a while ago!

Added quite a few things here, I surprisingly haven't kept the RBY 2k20 section updated and even missed a few things :psynervous:

Here's a list, some of these are available in French thanks to Oiseau Bleu;
A lot of this is really damn detailed, and we intend to make more articles soon. I'm specifically making an introduction to RBY Balanced Hackmons (since it's remotely playable now) + pre-statusing and Counter mechanics.

The strategy dex is also jam-packed with sample sets for every format available, strongly recommend checking them out!

After a while of work, I finally got round to releasing an article about RBY Balanced Hackmons on RBY 2k20, with a revamped ruleset that can be played on the site's PS Server. This goes over the new pre-status items I added through a mod, as well as the introduction of L255s and (the much less viable) MissingNo.'s unbanning. Naturally, this was added to the resource hub.

RBY UU's usage stats got added to the Index of Stats for this half of December, so they're now linked on the resource hub in the same way I did RBY NU. However, as these are taken during a period where Gen 8 is doing quickdrops twice a month, it's naturally split alongside it. I plan to make cumulative stats myself once the ladder is officially over. I have also added placeholder links for when the second half's stats are up. It's easy to tell what the link will be, it's just H2 instead of H1. So, once those stats go up, they will be automatically linked on the hub.

While these stats won't be accurate once the entire month is over, here are the 1630 Usage and Lead statistics, just like I did last time. I'm cutting off all the Pokemon whose usage is at 0%, so to not bloat the thread. For 1630 Moveset Stats, go here.

HE'S COMING
Because I have no life and like overanalyzing things for no reason, I did a spreadsheet for EB0LA calculating Dugtrio's damage with Earthquake, Body Slam and Slash against the RBY UU Viability Rankings.

This spreadsheet has multiple uses;
  • Seeing when a Pokemon is put into Earthquake range, a common sight in UU play.
  • Seeing what Pokemon are vulnerable to Slash -> Earthquake (eg. opposing Dugtrio), which helps with safer play.
  • Weighing out whether Body Slam or Slash is worth it for your team, considering the damage decrease. It can be better for paralysis scouting, but Slash's damage is also great.
  • Seeing average damage in regards to the pool of viable Pokemon.
This spreadsheet automatically calculates the damage and %, though I used PS Calc to check how accurate it was. It generally is, but either due to PS Calc or Google Sheets, it can be off by a point or two. If you need more scrutiny for a singular matchup, I recommend using PS Calc instead. However, for general analysis, it's great.

Now get on the spotlight ladder and send everything into Dugtrio range. Laugh forever as you do so.

I put out an article on RBY Confusion today for RBY 2k20, based on an old article on 2k10 before it shut down. It details the mechanics, glitches and provides exact numbers on Confusion damage for every Pokemon, with Max Atk and 1 Atk DV + 0 Stat Exp. I believe this is the first time the numbers have "resurfaced" in around 5 years.

The stats for H2 December are out, and as expected, the links updated properly on the resource hub. Here are the Usage and Lead stats with Pokemon of 0% Usage omitted, 1630 as before. I'm not sure how to do cumulative stats from these, but if I ever figure out how, I'll do it for sure.

I should have done this a long time ago, but I'm adding pacattacc's exemplary "BoomDex" to the Resource Hub in the "Other Resources" section. This is one of the best calc sheet resources I have ever seen. While it hasn't been finished for every single format he's set out to do it for, all "standard" formats are done. Honestly, it's unreasonable to ask for more with how much that's been done. The guy's an unsung hero in RBY. I contributed Exeggcute and Haunter to this myself too, though they could probably be improved in scope (LC for Exeggcute, NFE for Haunter).

The BoomDex is a hub sheet linking to calc sheets for various Pokemon's use of Self-Destruct and Explosion. Every single one, for their respective tier. It highlights OHKOs in green as well.

The following formats are considered;
  • Ubers, OU, UU, NU
  • NFE & LC
  • RBY 251
  • MissingNo. Cup (not necessarily the name, but it's essentially whatever format you'd allow Glitch Pokemon in)
If anyone's looking to get into using an Explosion user on one of their teams in RBY, by all means, get stuck into this. It's incredible.

--

I've also added a WayBack Machine link to an older revision of the Smogon Strategy Pokedex. You may be thinking "What? Plague, why would we need that?". Well, it's actually fully intact, and a December 2007 revision. I could scarcely believe this still existed, but it does. It's nice for legacy info, and since some people do play the old UU for fun sometimes, I thought I'd add a link to the Pokemon List for people to view it. All pages are intact. You can even view the old tiers!

Some minor things.
  • I've added a Pastebin with RBY UU tour replays and usage stats to the "Other Resources" section on the Resource Hub. This features all replays from RoA Olympics #3, RoA Olympics #5, Pokemon Perfect UU World Championship 2019 and RBYPL 2020. This also has usage stats for the latter two. I mainly did this for research purposes, but since there's so much high-level gameplay here, it makes sense to slot it in, eh?
  • Someone called Akira did a Tauros Hyper Beam cheatsheet as well, which I've added in the same place. Not sure what their Smogon name is, it got put in RoA though. I've archived it on Imgur in case it gets lost.
In case you don't want to click links, here's the sheet itself, featuring everything on the current OU VR.

I've also updated the OP with a present-day standpoint and removed mentions of some reprehensible users.

With the improvements to its RBY section, as well as more English support, I've added Red Shreder's Overstrat website to "Other Resources". Primarily in French, the site acts as a visual teambuilding resource for all OU tiers. It includes various sample teams, sets, and more, so it can act as a good way to dip your feet into RBY OU.

You can access the site here, and there's a thread for it here. For the English section, which is currently for the strategy dex, go here.
