The Everything MLB Thread

The mental block that is the "Curse" is alive and well.

And that's all it is; it's just a collective inferiority complex that springs up whenever the object of that complex (winning in big situations) comes into play. (at least that's what I think)

The 04 Red Sox played like they had nothing to lose - that's how they came back from 3-0 down.

This year's team has so much more pressure, especially with their fast start, the expectations that come with their payroll and WS win - and the fact that there is that thought in the back of people's minds "will it be ANOTHER 81 years?"

Slightly off-topic - are there certain sports towns that are toxic for players in terms of atmosphere and pressure from fans and media, and is Boston one of them? (along with Philly, New York, Chicago, and others)

things are looking good for the yanks... red sox got swept by the blue jays and the yankees swept baltimore. just looking at the other teams and the yankee's recent performance is really telling of who will be making it to the playoffs and who will have to fight for the wild card spot.

the only team that really has a bad atmosphere is the Yankees in my opinion...

Bad atmosphere? They are one of the few teams with actual class. They have a dress code, so they don't have people looking like cavemen (y halo thar Red Sox) and they don't have any head cases on the team (Manny "I play when I feel like it" Ramirez").

the red sox need to stop resting people for the playoffs and actually make the playoffs first

maybe you haven't noticed the 7 game lead that the Red Sox have over the Tigers, the nearest team to beating them in the wildcard race. Even if the Sox fall to the yankees (probable), they would have to go on a 7 game losing streak while the tigers won 7 straight just to tie the race, and I doubt that that will happen.

New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago are filled with press and fans that scrutinize your every move. The New York Yankees have one of the classiest organizations and the locker room is not "toxic" its the press and fans however lead many players to jump town and play for a quieter team. Players like Derek Jeter aren't even safe as hes been the target of plenty of scrutiny. Every sports team in the New York City area is under heavy watch by the new outlets and every fan. But then on top of that, because the Yankees are the "class" of the league, they are examined even more by the rest of the nation.

Chicago is very much the same in all respects as New York, but surprisingly they aren't covered as much in the national press so even though you don't hear about things going on there, it is going on.

I think the worst fans of all are Philly fans, New York fans will boo, Philly fans will boo and throw snowballs. They take scrutiny to the next level. You have a short time to do anything good, and even if you do, you're still going to get booed the next year. McNabb took his team to the Super Bowl and is not getting booed every time he steps on the field, Iverson took his team to the Finals, he was getting booed so he jumped ship to Denver. Any sports figure in Philly will tell you its a terrible place to play, right now the Phillies are doing fine, but wait until something happens, and the boos will start to rain down.

Those are the only 3 places that scrutinize, inspect, etc your every move. Here in Los Angeles, Kobe Bryant was accused of rape, no one cared, Kobe Bryant demanded a trade, no one cared and they all said "we still love you." Players aren't in the paper 24/7 talking about player x going to strip club with mistress y. Boston, Seattle, SF Bay Area, Florida, etc all care about their teams and players, but they do not do what the above places do, they might not care that much, or they might not put it into public.

And yeah go Yanks! Lets keep the division streak alive.

I agree with your whole post but i believe that Boston should be added to the list. Although the press might not get on the backs of the players like the case of the Yankee's. But the fan's get on the case of the players. Manny has wanted to leave Boston a number of times due to the people in Boston always on his case and not giving him any privacy.

I think you're taking that a little far, bro. We are a working class town, and there is nothing we hate more than overpaid athletes who don't work hard to earn their retarded amount of money. The only thing we ever boo is lack of hustle. The reason the phillies aren't getting booed right now is because every one of them goes out and busts their asses and earns every cent of their paycheck. Donovan McNabb, on the other hand, seems to be more concerned about breaking a nail than winning a game, so he can leave town for all we care.

And the only reason Iverson ever got booed is when he skipped out on practice with some lame excuse, which is something he did way, way too often. Other than that, we loved the guy, cause he busted his ass on the court.

And now, for the reason i'm posting: I would like to warmly extend my middle finger to all you Mets fans out there, and say rofl and lol @ you. Thank you so much for the embarrassing, massive, laughable, humiliating, despairing, and downright AMAZIN' collapse. We sure do appreciate it.

Love, Philly

I'm finding the mets collapse hirlarious. I personally don't like any team from New York and typically only route for them if absolutely necessary

i.e. giants over cowboys.

It's good to see that the phillies are in for the first time in a long time. I thought after they started 4-11, they were in deep trouble. Anyways, hopefully it's red sox/phillies in the series, but doubtful.

The Rockies have won 14/15. If that isnt one hell of a stretch run, I dont know what is. Go Rockies! I didnt think they would make it this year, but wow, that was a hell of a game.

300th post. Woohooo. I wasted it on sports trivia.

what an intense game...go rockies!!!

Jeff Francis will represent, wait and see.

That was a sick game. And i only saw it from the 8th inning on. I thought the Rockies were done after that 2 run bomb with no outs. Plus after the Mets collapse, the suicide rate of Metsfans is through the roof. Its fun to to continually bag on them.

Phils over Rockies
Slugfest, both hitters ball parks, both great lineups, Rockies are REALLY hot, but in the end I think the Phils have a better lineup and the NL MVP.

Cubs over D-Backs
I'm not convinced with the D-Backs hitting, they have some good pitching but Soriano can spark the Cubs into winning any game.

Yanks over Indians
Yanks run into some trouble with the best 1-2 punch in the playoffs with CC and Carmona. In a short series such as this that could spell doom, but the Yankees can get production anywhere in the lineup, so lets see what happens.

Sox over Angels
Angels have a pretty bad lineup, Vlad is hurt and no one else on the team can really hit it out of the park, the Sox just outmatch them in most respects.

I'm gonna say phils over rockies, because the phils are just plain better and definitely want it more, and we also have home field advantage which means a hell of alot with fans like us. Either way, whoever wins - be it the fightins or the rox - will go to the world series. Neither the Cubs nor the snakes have a chance against either. The Cubs, are...well...the Cubs, and will find a way to lose. If Carlos Zambrano doesn't fall over dead, then Wrigley will be invaded by aliens or something.

In the AL, Yanks over Indians for obvious reasons, and Sox over the Angels because everyone of the Halos seems to be injured. Yanks will beat the Sox in the CS, though, because New York is New York and Boston is Boston. Baseball is a simple game.

I really like this year's playoff scenario. All but three of these teams are some of the oldest in baseball, so it has a nostalgic feel to it.

xd so 3 sweeps, and the damn yankees are the ones who have to win a game ;/ hopefully they can't win 2 more. they played awful in that game they shouldn't have won

So zerowing is awful at picks I hear

How can you defend booing Donovan McNabb? He took you to several NFC championships and a Super Bowl. Just because he did not 'win the big one' does not give you a right to boo your own player. A team should never boo its players unless absolutely necessary (for instance, J.D. Drew this year might have counted before he picked it up, but A-Rod last season definitely not). I would never boo Dirk Nowitzki, I would never boo Steve Nash, etc. some players earn that right, and Donovan McNabb is certainly one of them.

P.S. Rockies over Diamondbacks 4-1, Sox over Indians 4-1 are my picks for r2, I did not post my awesome r1 picks because of my grandfather's death and being away from my computer before and during the start of the playoffs!

i said rockies and indians in the ws before the playoffs started and im sticking with it

Let's go Red Sox!

I'm wearing my Boston cap now as I can resemble the looks of Kevin Youkilis with the full goatee and all.

Red Sox won 10-3. The Sox played really well. Gagne, luckily, got the last out before lowering the lead. The bases were loaded, the count was full, and it was the top of the ninth, with two outs. A real suspense-builder! And then he pulled through in the end and forced the swing to get that last out. Ramirez and Ortiz played well, too, and I heartily congratulate the Red Sox on their first win in the ALCS.

Rockies - Red Sox WS imo.

How good is my 4-1 Rockies pick looking booyeah

(I will not brag about my Red Sox pick yet since it was only one game, but they demolished CC Sabitha)

the only reason the red sox have gagne is so he can come in with a 10 run lead and make it a save situation so papelbon gets more saves

but i've said red sox and rockies, and neither one looks to lose a game before the ws
