The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

Let's suppose Brady sat the game out. You really think Brain Hoyer would have done any better? Sometimes playing severely injured still gives you a better chance than playing your backup lol.

Also wow @ Pack/Cards. The Packers must've read my post earlier and decided to try to fuck up my predictions!

I'll adjust my predictions slightly to incorporate the new matchups. Not much is going to change though.

game of the year? what an insane game and finish

I have never understood the insistence that the only games that are exciting are games in which both teams relentlessly score...the comeback aspect might have been exciting, but I prefer a game with tons of goal line stands to a shootout. Aaron Rodgers throwing 400 yards in a close loss is not really very new, with him having thrown 384 losing to the Packers the first time (30-23). By the way, this is not even the best Packers shootout of the year http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291220023 Steelers 37 Packers 36 with Rofflesberger throwing for 503 yards, an 83 and 60 yard touchdown (one from each team), ridiculous 10-16 and 7-16 third down efficiencies (compare that to 5-11 and 3-5 today, yawn). Granted, that was a game of the year candidate for sure.

Best two games of the year in terms of sheer excitement were probably:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=290921015 Colts 27 Dolphins 23; Perfect Prefect Percy Manning versus the Wildcat on Monday night
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291115011 Colts 35 Patriots 34 Brady and Moss having incredible nights together and still falling short as Manning wrecked them the entire late game

Other standout games:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291123034 Titans 20 Texans 17 as Vince Young wins the game in ugly fashion (12/22 116 yards 1 TD, but 11 for 73 running!) fueled by Chris Johnson running for 151 yards despite Schaub's typical 300 yard throwing effort, all decided by a field goal to break the tie with just :47 left followed by
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291129010 Titans 20 Cardinals 17 six days later as Vince Young unleashes holy hell passing (387 yards), Chris Johnson runs for 154, and the Cardinals defense is tight enough that the Titans STILL only win as time expires on VY's first touchdown pass of the day. Most incredible of all, 20-17 is the most likely average score, so to pull it off two weeks in a row is pretty awesome.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291115024 Chargers 31 Eagles 23 McNabb throws for 450, Rivers throws up a 131 qb rating and has an actual running game on his side, Sproles makes every return a big one (24.5 average), and the Chargers win a convincing game against a future playoff team as they continue their incredible regular game winning streak
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291101020 Dolphins 30 Jets 25 Sanchez on fire, Thomas Jones running amok, no offense from the Dolphins...and Ted Ginn puts up a 101 yard kickoff return and 100 yard kickoff return 7 minutes apart!
http://espn.go.com/nfl/boxscore?gameId=291018016 Vikings 33 Ravens 31 a shootout not relying on desperate throwing alone, as Flacco posts 28/43 385 2 TD, Favre throws 21/29 278 3 TD, Ray Rice throws up a 10 for 77, AP 22 for 143 and no fumbles, Sidney Rice goes 6 for 176, all this despite 3 sacks by each team and 8 QB hits on Flacco, 5 on Favre, and Percy Harvin returns 4 for 81 only to be destroyed by Lardarius Webb's 7 for 165! Phew, now that is a fucking shootout!

Other great games like Chargers-Cowboys, Saints-Cowboys, every Saints or Colts game against any good team, both Vikings-Packers games, both Cowboys-Giants games, Steelers-Chargers, Cowboys-Chiefs (Miles Austin 10 for 250 lol), Colts-Broncos (21 for 200 to Marshall and still getting smoked lol), Eagles-Giants (6 for 178 from DeSean Jackson!), and mabye even Chargers-Ravens (Rivers has 436 yards of desperate passing, loses to a dominant defense).

Also I know this post was way more than your post deserved as response, I was curious to figure out the best games of the year once I started though.

The Cowboys defense has allowed 12 points per game over the last nine games, including THREE games against the high scoring Eagles (as well as one Saints and Chargers, also really high scoring teams). Dallas losses: by 2 and 7 to Giants, 7 to Broncos, 10 to Packers, 3 to Chargers. Vikings losses: by 19 to Panthers, 6 to Bears (overtime), 13 to Cardinals, 10 to Steelers. That type of disparity favors the defensively dominant team. And...you beat the Packers two times in humiliating fashion! I would very much want that team as my repeat opponent, since I obviously have matchup advantages of some sort going on! You are being rather absurd!

All I'm saying is that the outcome of the Vikings vs Eagles, Vikings vs Packers, and Vikings vs Cardinals scenarios are all pretty much guaranteed to be losses for the Vikings. The outcome of the Vikings vs Cowboys, although will still likely end in a loss for the Vikings, is unsure.

Haha CaptKirby, your list looks too biased. All of the teams you listed are all playoff-bound or was almost playoff bound (except Chiefs.) There were other games like 49ers vs Vikings, Jags vs Colts, Bears vs Vikings, and Eagles vs Broncos to name a few. Also the Browns had some real fun games vs teams like Chiefs and Lions.

I gotta admit though that the Pats vs Colts game was the best game of the year. Pats dominated early, but Colts came back late and I will not forget the late game drama of the fourth down play by the Pats.

well..i was 0-4 for the weekend....lol

for my sake as a texans fan. i need jets to be in superbowl, so they can beat colts in afc championship, so i can say "fucking dumbass bengals and colts laying down for jets to make playoffs..texans could be here instead"

so with that said i cant stand sanchez winning a rookie superbow, so nfc win it is!

Stop being such a pessimist, it is really fucking annoying.
^^^^^^^

It doesnt matter what the Vikings have done in the past -_______-... Theyre at home...... IN A DOME. Farve cant possibly have a absolutely terrible game, theyre gonna be just fine. Saying they wouldve been smakced by the Eagles is also not true... The Eagles lack a solid run game, and with that D line the Vikings could just sit back in pass coverage and take Jackson out of the game. This team really isnt that bad, even if the Cowboys are on. I like that undefeated record the Vikings have at home, even if two most likely shoulda been loses to the 49ers and Ravens

I can't even fathom why anybody would've taken the Eagles to win this past game.

Not everyone is a Cowboys fan. The Eagles are a good enough team to have won that game, but they didn't play well on that particular day. I might've picked them if they had made a better game of it in Week 17, but they didn't so I picked the Cows.

The type of shootout the Packers-Cardinals game was is precisely what the NFL has been trying for by implementing certain rules in recent years to open up the game for offenses. Though many of us prefer seeing defenses making goal line stands in a slugfest, the masses love the high scoring, big play ridden shootouts like we witnessed today. It's what gets the ratings, and being that the NFL is a massive money making entertainment machine, they do what they have to do to keep the viewers happy. Unfortunately sometimes that course takes away from the integrity of the game, but I guess that's how it goes. I'm still going to watch football every season.

My dad and I sat there and complained about all the bullshit penalties being called on both teams, but it seemed like most of them went against the Cards. On the same drive, Dansby got called for a phantom horse collar and Adams got nailed for a ticky-tack PI on 3rd down in the end zone. My dad is vehemently against PI altogether now and thinks guys should just have to fight for it, but I'd like it to be more like it was in the 80s and 90s where PI was still called if it was blatant he wasn't trying for the ball, but allow some fucking contact! This is football!

big cowboys big cardinals big jets if i had done wildcard predictions i would have gotten all of these wrong, jesus what a weekend

Baltimore at Indianapolis
NY Jets at San Diego

Arizona at New Orleans
Dallas at Minnesota

Baltimore at San Diego
Dallas at New Orleans

San Diego - New Orleans
sorry drew bb you know i love you

-AFC Divisional Round-
Ravens vs Colts - Despite all the down time, I think Manning will come out strong and pick apart Ravens secondary
Chargers vs Jets - Revis is amazing, but he can't stop Jackson and Gates at the same time. This game might be closer than expected though.

-NFC Divisional Round-
Cowboys vs Vikings - Red hot Cryboys will run all over Minnesota, and Favre will break down
Cardinals vs Saints - Watch what happens when Brees starts throwing 30+ times per game again. Sharper gets a pick6 off Warner who will have spent all his juice the previous week.

-AFC Championship-
Colts vs Chargers - Not this year San Diego, Colts finally figure out how to beat you in the playoffs.

-NFC Championship-
Saints vs Cowboys - Tough call here. Damn it do I hate predicting the Cowboys to win...

-Super Bowel-
Cowboys vs Colts - This will be a VERY close game, possibly overtime. As much as I hate the Cowboys, I'm pretty confident this is their year.

I went 3-1 with predictions by following the CaptKirby rule: always pick the team you like more if the matches are otherwise pretty even. I do not like the Cardinals, but Favre has always annoyed me, which made me dislike the Packers since I was a kid (I cannot really explain it - maybe because everyone else liked Favre? Maybe because he pretended to be some totally moral dude and I hate guys like that? who knows). I am a Cowboys fan, fuck the Eagles. Jets have a really exciting defense, but an ugly offense, so I like the Bengals more this season with a top tier defense and better offense (and Bengals uniforms are hilarious, Jets are plainly ugly). I found the Ravens more exciting this year than the Patriots because of defense as well.

Next week I am going to go with Colts (always liked Peyton, most exciting team to watch until they rolled over in their pursuit of 16-0), Chargers (you do not argue with a fucking eleven game winning streak, period), Cowboys (horrified by all the hype, the team that gains this status inexorably seems to gain Icarus syndrome, bound to fall that is), and Saints (besides Colts, the most exciting team to watch for most of the season, but this one may turn into another shootout with two exciting offenses and mediocre defenses, so Cardinals have a very legitimate shot). Yup, lots of favorites, but what can I do.

Haha CaptKirby, your list looks too biased. All of the teams you listed are all playoff-bound or was almost playoff bound (except Chiefs.) I agree, I picked teams with good teams because those are what I remembered strongly! I agree that Jags versus Colts was great, and that is literally covered in my "all Colts games" because I really did not want to spam like six more Colts games lol (one Jags versus Colts, two Texans versus Colts, some others I cannot think of off the top of my head). Bears versus Vikings was a terrible sloppy game by both teams - just because a game ends closely does not mean it was GOOD. I do not remember 49ers versus Vikings or Eagles versus Broncos mattering at all, sorry!

No, I definitely agree, this is what the NFL thinks is good for itself and makes the most exciting matches, but no one in this thread should be the casual masses since we are nerdy enough to post about sports on the internet and debate relentlessly about it. That is why I made a list of more exciting matches, shootout or not. I did pick mostly close games (a shootout can be exciting, but you stop caring in the fourth if it is a 30 point gap), and I did pick mostly games with the teams that mattered because those affected playoff races (something that could be realized even at the time, usually), so those are the two biggest biases I implemented. I just wanted to remind people that there were super exciting games this year that did not involve racing to 40 without playing defense. This was not a classic shootout, it was just a sloppy match, and I do not really know how to properly convince people....like Colts-Bengals in (?) 2006 was a classic shotoout, that game was the fucking tits. This game was just two teams fucking up, and the last td in the first half was given to the Packers by the referees, or the shootout may never have even happened.

My dad and I sat there and complained about all the bullshit penalties being called on both teams, but it seemed like most of them went against the Cards. lmao, I actually went through the same thing on that drive after Woodson got the strip on Fitz. It seemed like every penalty was against the Cards to keep the Pack in that game. That horse collar was such a bad call, he didnt even pull on him he just grabbed his jersey so he could wrap his legs up and take him down

That might of been his intention but he did pull Aaron Rodgers back.

Also that BS roughing the passer call, that illegal hands to the face call that never got called, BS no call PI on Larry who just ran over Charles

I mean i know its football, but if you're gonna call some of the stuff you call, might as well call all of it.

Bears versus Vikings was a terrible sloppy game by both teams - just because a game ends closely does not mean it was GOOD.
Because it is sloppy, it is a terrible game? It is fun to watch people make mistakes (especially if its Favre) sometimes if it manages to keep the game close. Jay Cutler had his moments and the overtime game was particularly fun to watch.

3-1 on predictions as well...if only the Eagles pulled their heads out of their asses and beat the Cowboys, would've been 4-0.

Anyways, for this weekend:

AFC:

Jets vs Chargers - Unlike the Bengals, the Chargers do have a great offense, and a good enough defense as well. Jets may have shocked "most" people last weekend, but this is really a no brainer to give to the Chargers to win.

Ravens vs Colts - Despite what others may think, those 2 back-to-back losses mean absolutely nothing, the Colts are far from being in trouble. They should win this, even if Manning has to put together another comeback victory.

NFC:

Saints vs Cardinals - Now unlike the Colts, the Saint's recent losses are a bit more disturbing. Still, hopefully with all the rest they've been given, they should be good to go against the Cardinals.

Cowboys vs Vikings - I honestly really don't care for the Vikings, but anything is better than seeing Cowboys advance. Should be a close one.

Ok, 3-1 last weekend, lets go on to this weeks matchups.

Jets @ Chargers - Ok, I know a lot of people will read that and think, "Oh, the Jets fan predicts a Jets win, lol," but consider this. The Chargers have one of the worst rush offenses in the league, and they will need to rely on their passing game, which the Jets have the number one pass defence in the league. The Jets are going to the AFC Championship game.

Ravens @ Colts - This is a tough one to predict. On the one hand, we have Peyton Manning, arguably one of the greatest QB's ever. On the other hand, we have the Ravens, who have been explosive as of late. In the end, Flacco and the Ravens will be heading to Giants Stadium for the AFC Championship game.

Cardinals @ Saints - The Saints Franchise has imploded as of late, with a loss to Tampa Bay for godsake. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are coming off of one of the greatest games of the year, the highest scoring Playoff game ever, and QB Kurt Warner is still going strong. Looks like Arizona is going back to the NFC Championship game for the second year in a row.

Cowboys @ Vikings - Another hard one to predict. Romo and "America's Team" (citation needed, bub) have been on fire, winning games in a dominant fashion. If they were playing in Arlington, I'd give them the game ... however, they're playing in Minnesota, where the Vikings are undefeated this year. Coming off of the Patriots loss, that doesn't seem like much, but Brett Favre will be in top form for this game, unlike Tom Brady. In the end, the road to the NFC Championship runs through Minnesota.

You are trying to tell me a game in which Cutler ripped up a defense was a good game. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, someone might not get it!

Slyguy, prepare to go 0-4 ;D

Wtf are you trying to imply and are you trying to incite my rage? Seriously, you are too biased. Obviously, your opinions are different than mine, but you just cannot see the merit of that game. How is Jay Cutler ripping out a good Minnesota Defense bad? This year, Jay Cutler was a fool at QB, but is it not nice to see him do good for once? Brett Favre may had a bad game to start with, but he still threw for over 300 yards and managed another last possession touchdown that forced the game to OT. The Vikings were really down coming into the 2nd half, but it was extremely pleasant to see the Vikings come back to force OT. Yes, there was mistakes in the game, but the mistakes kept the drama rolling.

Man, why do I go to a Pokemon forum to discuss sports anyways? Expected some open-mindedness, but psh.. this is a joke

Now now ladies, let's simmer down. The trolls are banned, so I think the remainder of us should be fully capable of remaining civil with each other.

In other news, I've been trying to find some sort of info on the extent of Roethlisberger's arm injury he sustained at the end of the Miami game, but to no avail. Has anyone else heard anything that I haven't? Please share if you have.

Jay Cutler had 27 TD to 26 INT this year (translation: only Delhomme and Russell topped him for bad quaretrbacks managing to play in a lot of games), he averaged 6.61 yards an attempt (lol), completion % fell for the second consecutive year. In the Minnesota game, he was 20 for 35.

It has nothing to do with opinions, you just do not understand football.

WaterBomb, let me know when you want me to take you even 1% seriously (hint: it will be when saying something as farcical as simmer down never crosses your mind again).

HAHA, I do not know football? What a joke! Why is it that you judge me and my knowledge when you do not even know me personally. You seem to can't even acknowledge that some things are right. What is your point by trying to prove Jay Cutler had 27 TD to 26 INT? Useless fact there. I never said Jay Cutler was a good QB. I said this year he was a fool at QB. I understand Jay Cutler sucks this year, but in that Vikings game, he did enough to help the Bears win.

Yes he was 20 for 35, but he still threw 4 TDs and only one interception which ended up with a QB rating of 108.4. Fucking Peyton Manning averages a 99.9 QB rating. Who threw that game-winning touchdown in that game? Cutler. Who fucking threw enough passes to get 28 points? Cutler. Don't even try to tell me that someone like Matt Forte or anyone else kept the offense running in the 2nd half thats not named the special teams
