The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

I think Woodson was the better overall player than Revis. *cough* Revis is currently the best shutdown corner in the NFL, no denying that, but defending your designated receiver on a passing down is not the only thing a CB does. It's like how most people pay no attention to an RB's blocking ability, how well a QB is at avoiding sacks, and so on. They're part of the overall package, even if they're rarely acknowledged, and Woodson was more complete than Revis in that regard. And postseason stuff isn't accounted for in yearly awards...

I never said it did, I just said it exposed Woodson as to why Revis really deserved it. Revis completely locked up his receiver, while Woodson got burned. Even if T.O. had no QB, id like to see Woodson shut down T.O. and Moss twice a year, and lock up Moss so bad that they had to line Moss up in the slot just so he could avoid Revis

That's interesting, I'll have to check that article out. It didn't seem like he was thrown to that often, but I could be mistaken. If that is true it's an even further testament to his skill, as he forced some of the best receivers in the game into mediocre performances.

EDIT: After reading the article, I find it very interesting that he was thrown to so often, as good as he is. But then again, if you think about it, he's always matched against the opponent's best receiver. Despite the matchup, QBs still want to throw to their top guy, so I guess they're compelled to throw his way eventually. What I also noticed was that the four other players listed in that article (Rodgers-Cromartie, Taylor, Joseph, and McFadden) were also among the better corners in the league. Perhaps this means that QBs are ultimately driven to throw to their top receiver most often, regardless of how good their cover is. After all, they have become the "top receiver" for a reason. When you look at it, it breaks down to a classic struggle of the offense vs the defense to see who comes out on top. It's too bad we can't focus more on these 1v1 matchups during the course of a game. Maybe the league should make stats like these more available, so deeper comparisons can be made between players.

Well the article seemed convinced that Rex Ryan's scheming helped, but I am not so sure of that. It might be just more like you said - you throw to your best guy, especially if 1v1, even if the 1v1 is against an equally great defensive player. Also yeah, I absolutely wish things like this were focused on over "_____ IS THE GREATEST QB/WR/RB EVAR!!!"

waterbomb, people throw to ike taylor a lot because QBs know he won't catch a damn thing

lol

Well really that's only this year for some reason. In the past he's been (and still is) considered the Steelers' best corner. And (lol) the fact that he still is with the season he's having tells you alot about the OTHER corners on the team.

Well I'm 2-0 so far this weekend, and my prediction that the "Cards would run out of juice" and "Colts would play well despite the week off" proved accurate. I hope tomorrow goes just as well.

We all saw what disciplined Ravens football could do against the Patriots.

This week we saw the traditional undisciplined Ravens football. Ohh well. I didn't expect them to be able to go through the playoffs without one of these games.

Also, I hope Reed and Mason don't retire. Hopefully Reed will be done with injuries. Mason can still play, and hopefully we will draft a young wide receiver that Mason can be a mentor to.

Always next year...

Vikings manhandled the Cowboys waaay hard.

Chargers and Jets next, my two favorite teams in the league. I'm hoping Chargers win, though.

Well the Cowboys losing made me 2-1 so far this weekend but I don't care because I hate them. Better luck next year ladies!

Chargers better win I got 10 bucks on them.
