The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

The problem I have is that the Saints are good at everything that burns the Vikings:

They have an outstanding punt/kick returner, and the Vikings are NOTORIOUS for having horrible special teams coverage. Reggie Bush has destroyed the Vikings before, and I expect him to do it again.
The Saints have a very explosive offense, which is the kind of offense that the Vikings struggle most against. The Vikings love to give up big plays, and big plays are what the Saints do best. I'm expecting at least one long pass and one long run, but there could be more.
The Saints' defense is incredibly opportunistic. The Vikings often turn the ball over in pressure situations (such as important games like the NFC Championship game), which could very well lead to a pick 6 by the guy that the Vikings should still have on their team, Darren Sharper.

That being said, if the Vikes want to have any chance at all, they need to put a lot of pressure on Brees. If the defense can play like they did against the Cowboys, then they might have a small chance to win. The offense also needs to be mistake-free, because the Saints will jump on every chance that they get.

If the Vikings can get the kinda pressure the cowboys got against the Saints... I don't see how they could lose besides shooting themselves in the foot on offense. The vikings have always had a nice run defense, and if drew brees has too much pressure to pass it.. yeah.

I'm just gonna do predictions week by week now for simplicity:

-AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME-

Indianapolis Colts vs New York Jets

I think alot of people are underestimating how good the Colts can be when they get serious. Though they rested starters in their last couple of games, they were already cruising several games before that. Peyton Manning won MVP honors for the 4th time for a reason, and I think we'll see why in this game. The Jets have a great running game and will try their best to establish it, but that won't be enough to win. Miami did the same thing and Manning still managed to beat them. Also Reggie Wayne vs Darrelle Revis should be an amazing matchup, as Revis' skills are truly going to be tested against the best QB in the league. I agree with others who have said this will not be a blowout though. Colts win 24-13.

-NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME-

New Orleans Saints vs Minnesota Vikings

The fact that alot of the Saints' top defenders were injured during their rough streak has been greatly overlooked in my opinion. With the return of Ellis, the Saints got back their best run stopper. Sharper is also back to 100%, which is a great sign. I think what ultimately will kill the Vikings is the fact that this has become the Brett Favre show and the focus of the offense has been shifted away from Adrian Peterson. Though he still had 26 carries against the Cowboys, most of those came later when they were simply trying to run out the clock. I think in this game Favre is going to try to do everything, and end up messing up big time. Key injuries in the Minnesota secondary will give Brees fantastic matchups for his receivers, and will allow the Saints to get a lead early. With the Vikings coming from behind most of the game, AP will be all but forgotten, and the aging Favre will try to carry the team. This is where the Vikings will get in trouble, and the game will slip away. I actually think this will be more one sided than most people are predicting, with the final score being Saints 41, Vikings 17.

so here are the two scenarios this week in the afc

indy wins: caldwell looks like a genius. not only did resting his players give them slightly more rest, it game them enough rest to ease their way into the superbowl

jets win: caldwell is quite possibly the worst coach ever. not only did he let his team lose thr 14-0 on purpose, but he still didn't make it into the superbowl and the team that they let into the playoffs by losing on purpose beat them and made it to the superbowl instead

either one seems like a pretty good storyline for what happens

Nawwleans and New York are my picks for the super bowl.

On another note, Vikings are the super bowl victors by 6%, according to nfl.com.

i say the vikings shut down the saints like they got shutdown the last 3 games of the season, while they did have an amazing game last weekend, i think favre and rice cant be stopped.

Saints-Colts, the predestined game...so of course you know either one or both are not going to make it. It seems a lot more common we get the "match we do not want" than the "match we want" in sports generally!

Also, the Cardinals outplayed the Steelers at every turn, but due to the efforts of a single man...

Ed Hochuli? :chaos:

So yeah, countdown to DM killing himself if/when the Bills hire Chan Gailey. I mean really, Chan Gailey? They couldn't hire a random guy off the street or put in somebody's cousin? Yeah, I know, not playoff-related but whatever...

He cant be blamed for letting the Jets win that game. They had no reason to try for undefeated, and chose to rest their already banged up starters. Plus, there was still no guarentee that they wouldve won that game even with the starters in.

I would lol, but I'm too busy loading my gun.

Ed Hochuli? :chaos:

You're just mad the Steelers beat you to 6 :D

Also I'ma laugh if Chan Gailey becomes a superstar.

Wonder who the Bears will take in the first round of the draft...how about...oh wait nevermind...well maybe in the second...oh nevermind too...lolbears

Ok, I think I'm calm enough for my predictions now:

Jets @ Colts - Ok, call me crazy, call be biased, but the Jets should be the favored team here. The Colts do have a phenominal offense, I won't take away from that ... but they are going up against the Number One ranked team in both overall and passing Defence. The Jets have proven that if they get a lead, they can't be stopped. Likewise, they are phenominal at 1st Quarter Defence, 4th Quarter Offense and, most importantly, Fourth Quarter Defence, whereas the Colts usually rely on coming from behind to win in the Fourth Quarter. The only way I see the Jets losing is if the Colts have a lead of two or more touchdowns going into the fourth. Jets win, 24-17.

Vikings @ Saints
Now, normally, I would pick the Vikings for this game - they have the depth and the ability to dominate the game. However, after last week, I have to go with the Saints, as they are clearly capable of getting a big lead in the 1st and 2nd Quarters, and the Vikings can't come back in time to deal with such a lead, feeling the need to rely more on Brett Favre and less on Adrian Peterson. The Saints will get a big enough lead in the first, maintain it in the second, and keep it for the rest of the game. Saints win 38-24.

I'm hoping for the Jets to win it all, so that there's a little bit of Ravens (Scott, Leonard, Ryan) winning the superbowl and because they remind me a lot of my own team.

Colts won as expected...still would have been nice to see the Jets squeek in XD.

Well, win Saints and make my prediction 2-0 for the week!

Le sigh ...

Well, it was more of a transitional year for the Jets anyway. Getting to a Championship Game with a Rookie Head Coach and a Rookie QB is a damn good achievement, especially when two of our best players were out for the season.

Next year, baby!

This game is amazing... Looks like the Saints got it now, which I'm thankful for. As a Bears fan, I hate the Vikings and Favre.
