How do they hack-check Matt?

The short answer is...

They plug your cart into your slot on your side of the "box" and plug this little rectangular box into the other side of the box in the other player's slot and turn your DS on and some other option pops up on the very first start up screen of the DS (kind of like how a new option pops up on the very last screen on Platinum or whatever when you are downloading pokes to PBR).

I talked to the guy the whole time he was doing mine and Siddarth's and he said that it's "a computer program from GameFreak that contains tons and tons of information on the Stats, moves, abilities, items, etc..." and that "if I wanted to I could open up all of your boxes and look at the IVs EVs what moves they've learned in the past see you Secret ID number...etc..."

He also said, and I agreed, it would be very useful if GameFreak would release that little box for sale for hardcore gamers because it basically contained every bit of "on-line pokedex information you can find out there" and it would "easily let you see your pokemon's IVs and EVs so you wouldn't have to guess anymore, or rely on some guy's online calculator. You could know for sure because you'd be using a product directly from the game creator."

I would buy that little black box if they would sell it.

Big congratulations to both OmegaDonut and imperfectluck! I'm glad that we could show that Smogon really is the best competitive Pokemon site out there! You two are great =)

(p.s. I'll see you in San Diego)

Congrats to OmegaDonut for winning! Congrats to all of the other smogoners who made the top 16 as well. Unfortunate that I could not be there to witness it, but still awesome to see smogon do so well. Good luck to everyone in San Diego!

Yay! Omegadonut won!! Congrats man! And to all of the other smogoners who made it too! Hopefully you guys dominate at worlds too so we can show everyone that smogon is the best!

Congratulations OmegaDonut. Interesting that how a flat tire enroute to Nashville did not stop this from possibly happening.

Time for yet another congratulations post. Congratulations to OmegaDonut for winning, as well as the other Smogoners who made Worlds. Now is the time to set our differences aside and beat down the Japanese. We'll need our A-game for this.

So, basically, it's an enhanced version of a legality checker. As such, there should be no problem using legal hacks (if you're extremely careful about it)

And, of course, I can't forget this: Congrats OmegaDonut!

Congrats OmegaDonut!

If imperfectluck and OmegaDonut make it to the finals in World that would be awesome and pretty funny.

Congrats Omega on the win! I hope someone recorded the matches for us that weren't around to see them.

This was exactly what I was wondering, if it was created by Gamefreak themselves or by TCPi. Every time I tried asking Marriland when he was running it he became super defensive and wouldn't let up any info, most likely because he thought I was trying probe for info to circumvent it.

I'm not surprised it originated from Gamefreak considering both the software and hardware would most likely be too difficult for a company without knowledgable DS programmers to develop reasonably. I just find it odd that Gamefreak has the capability of developing this but they don't implement it in the games themselves. I can understand if it was just recently developed, but they could at least have it run on PBR Wi-fi. Perhaps they care more about the integrity of these tournaments than just general gameplay. In other words they don't want to have people hack up a team, make sure it passes the check, and then go to a tourney. If this is the case then there is virtually no chance they would release the device to the general public, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Yet it seems they are willing to bend their "Zero-tolerance" policy stated on the rules in the case of No Harm, No Foul situations. This was proven when Alakapimp was caught with 512 EVs and let go.

Neo, it's a shame we didn't get a chance to meet yesterday. It seems you weren't the only top 16 to go home early. Jesse from Phoenix in the purple division told me he was going to leave as well and take the forfeits today.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure legal hacks were allowed:

The guy who knocked out my brother in London round 3 (Luigi) used pokémon that he later found out were legal hacks made on pokésav, if I remember correctly. He was't aware of it at the time though. And he got disqualified from the top 16 because he had 2 lum berries on his teamsheet, which imo was extremely unfair. The guys at the door should've pointed out beforehand when they were supposedly checking the sheets. He was under the impression that you were allowed to have 2 identical items on the teamsheet as long as you didn't use both at once. And even then they should've let my brother through. However, Luigi's disqualification gave Shoe a valuable free pass to the semis, which wasn't all that bad. However it's really annoying to know that had I not purposefully held back behind Shoe (thinking I'd be put against him), Shoe would've fought Sadman in the quarters and I'd be in the semis vs. Biggenz, whose team I knew very well from playing on NetBattle. But then again he also knew mine, so it'd be a toss-up from there.

Yeah. I doubt they would be able to tell if you used legal hacks as you can hack some really good stuff. and they could not be able to prove it.

Wow, I really thought IPL would take it again.

Great show from the Smogoners though and congrats to everyone :)

I know, I should have been more thorough meeting people and asking for their online names. Its always cool meeting people way back from the era of Azure Heights/AGNP.

I actually met Jesse at the Phoenix regional, kinda ironic both of us who got 3rd at Phoenix made it to top 16 and then dropped out, haha.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised by this, I guess since it didn't have an effect on gameplay they let it slide but it was still surprising. Glad alaka didn't get DQ'd though.

omegadonut, you have guts using the same team that you did in Nashville. congrats on pulling through anyways and winning it. IPL, you were right, his team did cause problems. haha

At worlds, you will have a big struggle to say the least.

Congratutlations OmegaDonut !
Allowing intentional draws isn't a particularly unusual practise. I know the Pokemon TCG allowed intentional draws many years ago. I'm not sure if they still do or if it extends to the video games tournaments.
Intentional draws regularly spoiled tournaments in some TCG like Magic, so it should not be allowed imo.
I don't know if they still allow intentional draws because I didn't play it since 2003, through.

Yeah, they stopped Intentional Draws a while ago in the Pokemon TCG at any rate, too much collusion and cheating was going on with regards to prizes and rankings. Glad they did that.

And grats to OmegaDonut, nice to see a smogoner represent!
