Smogon's Top Video Games List - Stage 2 (Current topic - REDEMPTIONS)

I just remembered that "Mother 2 (Earthbound)" and "EarthBound" are separately on the list. They are the same game.

Goddammit, why does almost every Final Fantasy have a great quality that makes me want to vote yes for it? >_<

EDIT: Except Tactics Advance. Fuck FFTA.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the legitimately undeserving ones will be eliminated during the rating period even if they get through the first wave of voting.

Also depressed at the number of abstains on Frogger. Kids these days, don't know their roots...

i'm surprised it's not getting a bunch of "yes" just because it's frogger. most people don't vote on what they actually played but instead what they heard was good or what they want to bandwagon. i thought for sure frogger would be one of those games. guess not, but i still hope it stays on the list.

In fairness Oblivion was a watered down cash in after Morrowind and Fallout 3 was Oblivion painted grey. If we're being picky then I'm actually happy to see Morrowind make the cut and not the rest because that was the game where the core ideas first came together. The sequels were just incremental upgrades and refinements ala GSC vs RBY, or Ms Pacman vs Pacman.

The "core ideas" first came from Arena and Daggerfall (except for core ideas that were stolen from Quest For Glory, which should be added to the list), two very lackluster games due to an insane scope (taking multiple real time days to get from location to location). Every Elder Scrolls game since has gotten progressively smaller, and Oblivion's awful leveling system and vanilla landscape notwithstanding this has only been a good thing. Skyrim was the first game I felt like they actually sorta achieved the goal they had been working towards, it's a vast world but that only matters when every city and character is interesting.

Still not too choked up about either Skyrim or Fallout 3 being eliminated, but honestly guns and VATS made Fallout 3 a huge improvement over Oblivion.

Arena and Daggerfall were more experimental and resembled proof of concept more than anything. They had huge flaws and weren't very playable but to a small diehard following. Morrowind was the first time they started to realise exactly what they wanted and it began to resemble a really polished finished piece of work. You can't really begin to look at Oblivion, Fallout 3 or Skyrim without seeing Morrowind underneath. The same can't be said of Morrowind and Daggerfall or Arena which were almost in their own universe.

I'd call Morrowind the proof of concept. Bigger is not better. Smaller means more detail. Skyrim was the first game to overcome the inherent flaws in their concept, and even then only somewhat. FYI I would rate GSC above RBY, and any incremental upgrade is still an upgrade. We mocked the G4 list over the illusion of influence, when we come to the rubric step I'll be very much arguing against an influence value.

Group 6 has concluded voting, and the following games have been eliminated:

FIFA 10
FIFA 12
FIFA Street 4
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Final Fantasy VIII
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Fortune Street
Forza 4
Frogger

Group 7 is now underway. Voting will end Sunday, July 1st at 11:59 PM PST.

I'm going to laugh at the end of this stage when we've eliminated so many games that there's less than 100 left.

Voted yes on everything except Guild Wars(played all the games on the list for atleast 3hours).

SO MANY AMAZING GAMES WHAT THE HELL.

i'm not looking forward to seeing what games are removed from this list. it has too many good ones.

Frogger was close, but the vote was tied 16-16. It may have a chance to be brought back.

@TehValkrys actually we're on pace to only remove about 200 of the 500 games, bringing the total to a still large 300 after this first wave.

I'm considering the following games to be given a redemption and a second chance at the list:

One of the Call of Duty games (which one is the best?)
Frogger

However, I must hear compelling arguments in favor of this. This will be a good chance to test the discussion method for later.

EDIT: I'm not sure what's happening, but every game but Guild Wars in this round is receiving an abnormal amount of NO votes. I have a feeling someone is trolling, and I don't like it. If I discover that someone is intentionally screwing with the results, I will have to adopt other methods of achieving them that will give me more power of authority. I'd like to avoid doing that, so let's hope it's not the case.

I nominate Fallout 3 for reconsideration. Frogger is a classic that is historically significant enough that it deserves to make it.

Personally I think Cod2 is the best. I can't remember if it was on the list or not but it was the one I found most enjoyable. It was very simple but still gave players replay value and set the standard for future cod games. Most people would say Cod4 is the best, but if you ask me most people just bandwagon it because they hear others say it's the best. MW2 was the last cod game I bought so I can't give any insight on BO and MW3.

A little fun fact is that Cod4 sales increased after MW2's release. MW2 made cod what it is today. Before MW2 Cod was just a game you picked up if you enjoyed FPS games. Now it seems like everyone plays it.

Also Frogger should be on the list. I'm pretty sure people have been trolling from the start but do your best to look out for anything suspicious with the votes. If the people here know even basic knowledge of gaming (specifically for the current list) they should know a lot of these games deserve a yes.

Incorrect. Modern Warfare had sold 13 million copies by the time Modern Warfare 2 was released, which is an extremely big number in terms of video games. It introduced the setting and storytelling mechanics that CoD is now famous for, and established the customizable multiplayer that MW2 would build upon.

Well, obviously it boosted the sales, but if you genuinely believe MW2 made CoD4 a success you have been living under a rock. And, if you believe MW2 is what made the CoD franchise what it is today, you are just being infinitely silly.

Still don't know how you can eliminate COD2 which was one of THE defining MP FPS's apart from CS 1.6. And MW too Christ...
