Time for a new one I reckon. Same rules as always.

Rules / Guidelines for asking & answering questions here:

1. Your answers should contain at least a brief explanation, even if it was the simplest of questions.
2. While answering Yes/No question, please quote the question you're referring to. It gets confusing otherwise.
3. At least do a simple google search before asking the question here.
4. We have a lot of excellent resources on our site. Be sure to check our articles, and not just for DP, before asking here. Our item and move descriptions are also a handy resource. You may be able to answer your own question with those resources faster than it would take for someone to respond to your question in this thread.
5. On a related note of #4. If you answer an extremely simple question such as "What does the Yache Berry do?", instead of just answering the question direct them to the appropriate link (in this case http://www.smogon.com/dp/items/yache_berry) so they will know where to find that type of information in the future without coming to this thread. Likewise, if a member asks for a damage calculation link them to a damage calculator.
6. This isn't the thread for "Look At This Pokemon" or "Should I keep it with these IVs" etc., use this thread (forgive me if I forget to update this link if a new thread is created, I'll try to keep up with it).
7. This is already in the Smogon and Stark forum rules, but I will reiterate again do not discuss ROMs or other illegal things. Also, don't ask for AR codes here. Use google for that.

In addition, here is a handy list of some information to avoid certain questions being asked over and over again. I re-read the ENTIRE previous SQ/SA thread so please read my list before asking a question since it took me a lot of time to compile to figure out what questions were being asked frequently. I'll be very sad if you ignore them =(.

Also, if there are any commonly asked questions (use your judgement here guys) that I missed; just send me a PM and I'll add it in after doing a search through the old thread. Thanks.

Edit: Screw this, if I already answered your question in this FAQ and you choose to ask it anyway; I'm just going to delete your question.
  • If the metaserver for ShoddyBattle is down (this is where only 1 server, usually Official, will appear on the list) click Advanced and a box should appear prompting you to "manually enter server information". If you wish to get to Smogon Shoddy under Host: type in shoddybattle.smogon.com and under Port: type in 50000. If you wish to access the CAP server under Host: type in cap.servegame.com and under Port: type in 8888.
  • If you are having trouble editing your posts, go to "User CP" as in User Control Panel, "Edit Options", and in the "Miscellaneous Options" section, set Message Editor Interface to "Basic Editor" which will allow you to edit in BBCode, then set back to "Enhanced Interface" when you are finished.
  • Looking for a legal Hidden Power legendary IV spread? Either play around with it (it's not hard to figure out the patterns) or look here or here.
  • NP = Now Playing (yes this was asked with frequency in other threads!)
  • CMT = Check My Thread
  • No, you can't have an image in your signature unless you have a badge.
  • No, you can't rate threads unless you have badge either.
  • Migrated Pokemon from previous generations can change their abilities upon evolution when traded to DP.
  • No, we don't know what your SID is. Ask in WiFi forums "Simple Questions / Simple Requests" or something. Or better yet, do it yourself.
  • The Rotom-formes are not currently usable over wifi, only local wireless (link battles). Same goes for Giratina-O & Shaymin-S.
  • On the note of hypnosis accuracy. If Platinum is the host, the accuracy is 60%. If DP is the host, it's 70%
  • For information on interesting and useful applications check out the DP Information / Resource thread and The Best of C&C.
  • The RNG stands for Random Number Generator (although it's not actually "random"). The RNG determines almost every one of the "random" events that take place in game and can be used in breading termed "RNG-abuse". For help RNG-abuse refer to his help thread. For technical information and applications see the In-Game RNG Section.
Go!

can you receive Pokemon not found in the Sinnoh Dex in Platinum before the first gym?
Yup, it just won't show up in the Pokedex until you get the National Dex. As soon as you can trade, you can get any Pokemon. This is also what happens if you restart your game to get an event like Jirachi at the Pokemart.

I'm having trouble playing shoddybattle, I download the program from shoddybattle.com and when it's all finished I start up shoddybattle but, for the different servers it shows that there is no one in them and I even tried entering the specific host and port names but all that does is show a "Connection Timed Out" error message, any help? Just a note that I have tried with bearzly and ColinJF but, they don't help me at all, they won't even answer me when I PM or post in the shoddy battle help thread.

What does the Zoom Lens do, really? Is it a bad Scope Lens or is it a bad Wide Lens?

EDIT: For clarification. Bulbapedia says it boosts the CH ratio, while here it says it boosts accuracy. Were there any tests done or anything so that we know for sure?

The smogon definition is correct, it ups accuacy. Its not nessesarily a bad wide lens, because even though the user must go last it ups accuracy by 20% compared to Wide Len's 10%.

Are any valid legendary IV combinations possible with any ID/SID combination?

Also does sycnchronise change legendary IVs to an IV combination to a combination thats valid for the nature which it has been changed into or would it stay as the IV combination of the nature it was going to be before it was synchronised?

ID/SID has no effect on the Pokemon's IVs. It only affects Shininess

Synchronize has no effect on a Pokemon's IVs, it simply "jumps" the Pokemon to a nearby "frame" with the desired nature and the IVs following it.

What are the two best attacks to use on a CurseLax? Obviously, Rest/Selfdestruct and Curse use up two spots. I was thinking Return/Body Slam and Fire Punch give decent coverage and STAB power. However, I've seen a few CurseLax with Earthquake and Crunch. When considering coverage vs. power which moves are best?

When I used a move with my current pokemon, and I get a choice item tricked on me, and use a different move, will the choice item prevent me from doing so?

if your Pokemon moved first, then you can change your attack because you executed it before obtaining the Choice item

Depends on your team - if you use Return/EQ then you're helpless against Rotom/Gengar but if you use Return/Crunch you're gonna have problems with Tyranitar, Luke and a few others. In choosing your move, make sure the rest of your team can deal with the threats that open up.

When I used a move with my current pokemon, and I get a choice item tricked on me, and use a different move, will the choice item prevent me from doing so?
Yes but only if the Choice item is tricked onto you BEFORE you attack. For example:

Rotom used Trick!
Salamence got Choice Scarf blah
Salamence used Dragon Dance

In that scenario, you'd be stuck using Dragon Dance - however, if it was like this:

Salamence used Dragon Dance!
Rotom used Trick!
Salamence got Choice Specs.

In that scenario you'd be able to change attacks again because Salamence wasn't holding the Choice item when he danced.

Is there some kind of list of speed numbers to aim for? I am trying to EV a my pokemon to outrun certain threats, but am having trouble finding the speed numbers I should be aiming for.

Thanks, Di :)

How do you check your SEXP?
I assume you mean EVs. You can't directly. However, you can determine if all EVs are assigned by speaking to the person in the Slateport market, who will give your Pokemon an effort ribbon if all 510 EVs have been earnt.

If you know your IVs, you can figure out EVs from the stats.

You can send them all the zero using certain berries. If the EV is over 100, the first berry reduces it to 100, then subsequent ones drop it by 10 each time.

Nah, I'm talking about the thing you get in the suspect ladder every time you use a suspect. Thanks though.
