Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Change completely?! I better get the rest in! ...Or at least, one of them in. Pet Mod Name: The Light of Alola (UltraBurstMons) Pet Mod Concept: This metagame aims to create new Ultra Bursts for Pokémon other than Necrozma. After all, it doesn't deserve to be the only one worthy of the light of the Pokémon world.... Explanation: Ultra Bursting requires a special Z-Crystal that can only be held by a certain Pokémon. Each Ultra form has 74 more stat points than it's regular form, and a possible change to it's typing and ability. In addition, they gain access to a unique Z-move. Miscellaneous: This is an OU meta, so all Pokémon that are useable in Scarlet/Violet are allowed, but Terastalization is banned.
UPDATE:
Oh...and one more, with gleaming! Pet Mod Name: FREEDOM CHAOS-✯ Pet Mod Concept: Tired of having your ideas screwed over by the votes? That is not a problem anymore in this pet mod, where freedom is finally at your fingertips...almost. Hang on tight...this might get chaotic. Explanation: In each slate, you can either submit one new Fakemon to the metagame, make an adjustment to one Fakemon, or ban a Fakemon from the metagame: Unlike other Pet Mods, this does not run on a voting scheme, so your entry will be added if it's post survives when the votes closed. The only way your entry is going to get rejected is if it is TOO broken or imbalanced. Your only limitation for making new fakemon are the six golden rules:
A: It must be a Fakemon that is your own original idea, but convergent variants or evolutions of existing Pokémon are allowed. (For example, Catnap and Charizard are not allowed, but Pokémon based off them or are convergent variants of them are allowed)
B: You have a BST limit of 550, so no overtuned stats, and focusing too much on one stat means the others will struggle horribly
C: Custom elements must be easily codeable
D: New types are forbidden
E: No swearing or rude words (Memes are allowed, but remember rule A!)
F: Remember the other entries! Miscellaneous: This is a micrometa, so only the new Pokémon can take part in it.
The following is subject to change betwen now and signups. Please read the OP carefully then!
Welcome to Micrometa Mafia, the (in)famous spin on Clean Slate and Pet Mods as a whole! The situation is familiar: create a micrometa, a metagame with a pool of about 40-50 Pokemon, using the mechanics of Gen 9 National Dex OU. Make sure there are ample options for teambuilding and create a fun and balanced metagame! However, there will be some factions among you who are tasked to team up and veer the meta towards unhealthy levels of offense, defense, or whatever gimmick is on their minds. Can you bring down the factions and restore order to Pet Mods?
Setup:
Signups
Before the first slate, players will sign up in the thread, similar to the process of a tournament or other forum Mafia games
We will be taking 30 players, with any other signups reserved for substitutes.
Each player MUST JOIN THE DISCORD! (Coming soon...)
Cards:
Before the game begins, each player will be shared a Google Sheet with two cards: a player card and a Pokemon card.
Player Cards
The Player Card shows your faction, alias, Identifier, Energy count. Your faction is your team for the entire game. Players with no faction will not know who they are teamed with, while players with a faction will know the other members of their faction.
With the faction comes a faction goal, which will be a principle that will guide your submissions.
The card also contains your alias, the name under which all your submissions will be listed, and any kill or ability will be targeted at that alias.
The identifier is the passcode you will include with your submission to make sure no one submits for anyone else.
Energy is a new feature of Micrometa Mafia. Energy is used to determine eliminations, and can be earned through winning slates or using certain abilities. Your Player Card will keep track of your Energy count.
Pokemon Cards
Pokemon Cards show the Pokemon's ability and how many uses the ability has left.
Some terms that you might find on your card:
Vote: Votes added to your submission
Vote Power: The value of your vote
Passive: This ability does not need to be activated to be used
Until Success: This ability can be activated until it takes affect. Afterwords, it can no longer be used.
Do not share any part of your card(s) with anyone.
Process:
Slates will be divided into two phases: a Day phase and a Night phase.
Days
During this part of a slate, players will make submission and take ability actions. All of these will be done through the Google Form linked in the thread and Discord. This phase will last 24 hours.
Submissions
Players must make adjustments to an existing Pokemon to add to the metagame
Keep in mind this is, as the name suggests, a micrometa, meaning no Pokemon exist except the ones added in by players
Submissions must follow these rules:
You may only use elements usable in legitimate competitive play (no Pokestars, glitch Pokemon/moves, Stellar/Typless, etc.). If you are not sure if something can be used, please ask a GM
You may use any of the existing 1,025 Pokemon
You may change the typing any way you want
You may change the abilities any way you want (must have 1-3 abilities)
If your submission is invalid or does not follow your faction's goal, you will be notified and you must submit again.
If you fail to submit for a round, your vote will not count for the slate, regardless of any abilities.
NEW! Wild Pokemon
You have the chance to earn extra abilities by catching Wild Pokemon!
Caterpie
Ability: Run Away - Does nothing. (Uses: 3)
Your submission be Flying-type.
At the beginning of each slate, a Pokemon will be presented with a restriction.
In order to catch this Pokemon, your submission must follow that restriction. Additionally, you must bid an amount of Energy on the Google Form.
Whichever players follow the restriction and bid the most amount of energy acquire the Pokemon. This will not be announced. Anyone who did not gain the Wild Pokemon will keep the energy they bid.
You may have a maximum of 3 Wild Pokemon throughout the game.
Abilities
If you wish to use your Pokemon's ability, please state so in the Google Form under the appropriate question. Use the format "Pokemon@Alias"
If your ability targets a user, target the alias of the user you wish to affect (ex. "Incineroar@Florian")
If your Pokemon has a passive ability, there is no need to enter anything in the form for your ability.
You may only use one ability per day.
Nights
Night phases consist of voting and night actions. Voting will be open for 12 hours, and night actions will be open for 12 more after that.
Voting
Vote for a user's submission by posting their alias in the thread.
You may change your vote an hour after posting your previous vote. Simply post another vote, do not delete or change your old votes! If you do so your vote change will be ignored.
After 24 hours, whoever has the most votes will receive 3 Energy and have their submission added to the metagame
In the case of ties, abilities will be ignored.
If it is still tied after abilities are ignored, all tied players will win
The runner-up(s) for the Night (all players with the second highest amount of votes) will receive 2 Energy.
Night Actions
After voting is completed and energy is awarded, users may take Night Actions, which include
Kill: Spend 3 Energy to choose an alias and eliminate that player from the game.
Protect: Spend 2 Energy to block a kill targeted at you.
End Game
The factionless players win when all faction members are eliminated
A faction wins when there are two factions left and they outnumber the other remaining faction.
If two players from different factions are the only ones remaining, a special tiebreaking situation will be arranged.
General Rules:
No flaming/toxicity. Even if you're right and they're stupid, keep it professional.
No screenshots of private messages between players or hosts.
If you are not active (no submission, activity in Discord, voting) during the first slate, you will be subbed out immediately.
If you wish to privately message another user, please invite at least one GM into the chat.
If you wish to leave the game, do not hesitate to let a GM know. Do not break purposefully break a rule to get purposefully disqualified.
Baiting anyone into breaking any game or forum rules will be punished as severely as if you had broken the rule yourself.
Pretending to break any game or forum rules will be punished as severely as if you had broken the rule yourself. (e.g. pretending to copy/paste a fake Role)
And of course, please follow all Smogon guidelines for using the forum and Discord!
Anything written in red is grounds for immediate termination from the game.
Pet Mod Name: Type Stacking Pet Mod Concept: Incuding Pokémon of the same Type into your Team gives the whole Team a boost, depending on the Stacked Types. Explanation: The slates are going to be subdivided in three groups:
First group, the Slates for the Type-Stacking effect: each slate 3 types are selected by the council, contributors will have to submit the effect that they want to be applied to the Team when 2 or more Pokémon of one of the selected types are present in it; the Type-Stack effects will be of two types:
one incremental, that scales on the number of Pokémon of the same type are included, if more than 2 (for example, the Atk of the active Pokémon is boosted by 10% for each Fire-Type Pokémon in the team)
one passive, that may or may not scale on the number of Pokémon of the same type included in the team (for example, one scalable could be that using a Ground-type move sets 1 level of Spikes on opponent's side for each Ground-type Pokémon past 2; one not scalable could be that, if there are more than 2 Ice-Types in the team, every time an Ice type takes the field, Haze is used on the opponent)
Second group, the Slates for Moves and Abilities that are influenced by Type Stacks: after the Type Stack effects are decided, contributors can submit Moves or Abilities to have their effects enhanced by the Type Stacks, or to gain a secondary effect from the Type Stacks (for example, Drought/Sunny Day could summon Harsh Sunlight for one additional turn for each Fire-type in the team past 2, while Iron Fist could give a 10% boost to "Punch" moves for each Fighting-type in the Team).
Third group (optional), the Slates for form changes: this slate will probably be only 1 or just a few, and for its duration contributors can submit form-changes that may interact with the Type Stacks (for example, RKS System could give Silvally the effect of the Stacked Type's ROM, while Multi-Attack could gain a secondary effect for each type).
To activate the Type Stacks' bonuses, the 2 (or more) Pokémon must share at least one of their types, for example:
a Team composed of would get
3 Stacks for the Water type
2 Stacks for the Fairy type
2 Stacks for the Ice type
just 1 Stack for Grass, Dark and Electric type (so no bonus is gained from these types)
The team is obviously totally random, but the main reason why this could be interesting (imho) is that Type Stacks counterbalance coverage, making some partial-Monotype gameplay emerge. Obviously, the bonuses derived from Type Stacks should have enough value to give the player a difficult choice between taking advantage from them or using different types to cover weaknesses. Miscellaneous: The idea for this Pet Mod was originally posted by woo in the Workshop Thread, I asked if we could work on it together, and I'm submitting it now after getting the original creator's approval.
The inspiration is taken from Elemental Resonance, a game mechanic of Genshin Impact, where using characters of the same element in the party gives a different boost to stats and DMG for each element.
Set in Stone
Premise: all pokemon can only use specific sets. Basically like random battles except you can actually make a team. To be even more clear, you can use any pokemon, but every team with, lets say a Mewtwo, will run the same Mewtwo set.
Pet Mod Name: Breeding Variants Pet Mod Concept: Variants of Pokémon based on breeding. Explanation: Alongside returning Variants from V1, V2 and V3, we take slates to create new variants of Pokémon based on the donor of the same Egg Group, regardless of gender or genderless (with the help of Ditto Goo), although Undiscovered Pokémon(*) are not allowed. The following are donated by a Pokémon of same Egg Group;
One of the donor’s type to replace the base’s types; if the base is single type, then simply add one of donor’s types as the secondary type.
Five moves from the donor’s movepool, based on latest availability.
One of the donor’s Abilities; the base can only have one of it’s Abilities replaced, not added upon.
Form-changing Abilities like Zen Mode and Ice Face can be donated, and stat changes are based on the differences between the base form and the other form.
Palafin and Wishiwashi must be used carefully as donors because of the massive stat boosts they provide from the only Ability. This also applies to Minior to a lesser extent.
Stat changes by Zen Mode depends on the donor; regular Darmanitan grants the bulky, higher Special Attack, Psychic-granting Zen Mode, while Galarian Darmanitan grants the faster, higher Physical Attack, Fire-granting Zen Mode.
Averaged base stat (HP, Atk, Def, SpA, SpD, Speed) of both the base and donor’s. Only the donor’s base form counts for this.
A new suffix to indicate the donor.
Optionally, a dex entry.
(*) Baby Pokémon are considered as the same Egg Group as their evolved form(s).
Miscellaneous: Based on NatDex OU and it’s banlist this time, with only Mega Evolution allowed as super mechanic; this means no Z-Moves, no Dynamax + Gigantamax, no Terastalization. Ditto cannot be a base nor a donor; Slaking cannot be a base; Smeargle cannot be a donor; Pokémon that is classed within UU or higher in NatDex (with regular or alternative form like Megas in higher tier having higher priority) cannot be the base Pokémon. Power level preferably closer to OU Gen 5 to 7.
Pet Mod Name: Branched Potential v3 Pet Mod Concept: I'm taking over from last gen; here's the old forum thread Explanation: Same as above, no notable changes barring council which is in the hide tag and voting moving to M4A's style (example here). Oh and Tera is legal at the start obviously.
Teams gain a Trainer slot, where teams can select a single Trainer to provide a single universal effect to the team, as a universal Ability the entire team gains access to. This will be a gen 9 ou meta without tera.
Explanation: Each slate will either feature a themed slate/a free for all, and the community will submit abilities for each trainer/any trainer.
Rules:
Trainers Abilities may not be designed to effect a specific Pokemon.
Trainer Abilities should be one singular effect.
Trainer Abilities should be thematically relevant to the trainer.
Two-Step Mons v3
The pet mod where it takes double the time to make a new Mon finally returns to generation 9!
In this pet mod, Pokémon creation takes two steps: one is the creation of a custom element, and the second one is the creation of the Pokémon proper. Here are some guidelines for how the steps work and how the mod is organized:
Step One - Moves and Abilities:
- Each slate will provide parameters that the move or ability must adhere to. These will be outlined in the post for that slate.
- Try not to give your new moves or abilities too many effects. Try to limit it to one or two things, unless there is a precedent in an existing move or ability.
- Depending on how powerful the custom element is, the pokemon we create around it may need to be more or less powerful. Just try to avoid making a move or ability that accomplishes too much for too little effort ( i.e. sets Stealth Rock just for switching in ).
Step Two - New Pokemon:
- The slate will simply be one pokemon for each move or ability that was decided on in the previous slate.
- You can create a fakemon based around the new move or ability; you can also take an existing pokemon and modify it as much as you want.
- If the pokemon is receiving a custom move, try to make sure it would use that move on a majority of its sets. If it receives a custom ability, that must be by far its best ability.
- No custom elements aside from those that the pokemon is based around.
Pet Mod Concept:
- In VGC - TCG, people will modify and design old and new Pokémon that fit the spirit of TCG.
Explanation:
- "TCG" stands for the Pokémon Trading Card Game and features many unusual ideas, such as the concept of Technical Machine, Tag Team, Trainer Pokémon, Dark & Light Pokémon, Pokémon ex, V Star, Delta, etc. For some of these concepts, we will work for a while before moving on to another.
- If you want to look at the bigger picture, we will essentially create a customized, regional dex from the ground up--one in which people can have fun and go "wild" with their ideas. By "customized", I'm referring to anything between modifying existing Pokémon (stats, movepool, etc., within reason, of course) or coming up with new Pokémon, items, moves, and so on. Again, you are literally Game Freak working on a new regional project, with the main focus on adhering to the spirit of TCG.
Miscellaneous:
- This project will assume a non restricted format, meaning, no main legendaries, like Groudon. Previous generational features generally won't be included, such as Dynamax or Z-Moves. Depending on people's wishes, certain moves might not be included or severly limited. This could even lead to removing Dual Wingbeat from Dragonite, for instance, as it could be considered a tutor move that does not exist in this project's region. That said, moves like Hidden Power and Return/Frustration are not available.
- Moreover, this project encourages team work; you don't necessarily have to work alone.
- You do not need good knowledge of VGC or TCG. I'm here to guide you, after all.
Pet Mod Name: Super Smash OMs Pet Mod Concept: A metagame based on several individual Pokémon that represent different OMs collide into a singular metagame. Explanation: The metagame will be built from Pokémon who carry the specific mechanics of the mod they are ported from, e.g a Rotom-W ported from Sketchmons will have access to any one move.
If a Pokémon, Ability or Move is banned from the mod, you cannot sub it here.
Each mod can add up to five reps - we are currently looking at a 30 mon ideal lineup.
The current mods that will be considered are:
- Almost Any Ability
- Alphabet Cup
- Camomons*
- Convergence
- STABmons
- Sketchmons
- Flipped
- Pokébilities
- Revelationmons
- Tier Shift**
*If codeable
**Stats stay as they are upon winning, even if mon moves up or down a tier afterwards.
Can a fully playable and competitive tier come from this idea? History says no, but these metas are fun as hell to build and play so people will have a ball regardless. Miscellaneous: No council tbh, as we always say the fun is alot more interesting than the full on metagame itself. The mods chosen are the easiest to code on an individual level - STABmons Raichu-Alola is a Raichu-Alola with all non banned Electric and Psychic moves in its movepool.
This idea is kinda complicated to code, but it does look somewhat interesting to test out and council is willling to give it its best effort as long as there's support for the project. Approved!

MMM2 was one of the most stressful, infuriating, rage-inducing experiences I have ever experience in all of my years playing petmods and this is following in its steps. Approved!

A very interesting concept, the idea of keeping multiple Pokémon of the same type in a team has been somewhat shown in some mods, so it would be interesting to see a mod explore this concept through. Approved!
That's all for now, there has been quite a number of approvals this time around, mostly to keep the community busy after Solopl ends. We hope you all have fun with these new mods! Until next time.
None of my entries got in again, I saw this coming...but how will the submission process change completely?
After all, this was the next approvals round woo mentioned....
None of my entries got in again, I saw this coming...but how will the submission process change completely?
After all, this was the next approvals round woo mentioned....
We have a new rule change for submitting Pet Mods! From now on, you no longer need 15 posts in the Pet Mods subforum to submit a Pet Mod! However, we will expect a couple things from you before approving your Pet Mod:
Are you a active and positive contributor to Smogon?
Do you have enough experience and know-how to manage a competitive-focused Pet Mod (i.e. competitive knowledge, clerical skills like managing slates/resources)?
Is your idea clear and does it give plenty of room for community contribution?
Additionally, if you submit multiple ideas, only one can be approved per approval period (about 3 months). This is to encourage people to focus in on one idea that they are confident in and want to push to its fullest potential, plus running multiple mods at once is very difficult, even for experienced leaders.
That's all for now! Be sure to work on your ideas in the Workshop and then submit them here once they're ready!
this is the submissions thread, not the workshop thread. if you want feedback on a mod idea, post it here. also consider reading the thread OP before posting in the future, since this was all listed there.
Pet Mod Name: Combo Moves Pet Mod Mascot: Piplup Pet Mod Concept: We create Contest Combinations for regular battles, comparable to a generational gimmick. If a Pokemon runs a specific combination of moves, an additional 'contest combination' move is added to its moveset! Explanation: Would aim to get ~30-40 Combo Moves created, over 8-10 weeks with slates of 3 Combo Moves a week. Would like to get a Combo Move of every type, and the slates will have specific prompts to fuel diversity within the Combo Moves we have. I'm not sure yet if I want Combo Moves to drain the parent move's PP too. Probably, I do want it too, while having their own PP counter as well. That way, a Combo Move could also only have a PP of 1.
Pet Mod Name: Bizzaro World Pet Mod Mascot: Unown ? and ! Pet Mod Concept: A complete overhaul of effectively nearly everything that Pokemon has provided to us. Obviously some fundamental ideas will still be kept (or modified slightly), but basically every vanilla move, ability, item, Pokemon, even types will be changed, as well as status conditions and such. We can also create anything that might need to fill some gaps. Explanation: Aiming to make this a multi-stage community project where we will have different phases for editing a specific aspect of Pokemon, likely over the course of a month. The meta will be balanced around Nat Dex Ubers at the moment, but I aim for Ubers UU.
Pet Mod Name: Public Domain Pet Mod Mascot (if I ever actually get to publish this):
Pet Mod Concept: The barest baseline of a Pet Mod, where people can sub Fakemon and Pokemon, but if they win after the votes are tallied, Anyone can edit them to their liking in the next slate. Slates are separated by new creations and editing old creations. Doing both wouldn't actually be necessary, and slates will most likely be themed after fun concepts Explanation: a funny little thing I thought of a while ago, with the main point of it being around.. an OU-based metagame where changes can be administered if necessary by users. Miscellaneous: I could not for the life of me think of a mascot for something like public domain so I just chose mew.
the concept was a funny thing I thought of a while ago and i couldn't gain the courage to submit it until now
(additional rule of fun: you cannot change an eligible Public Domain submission completely from its original purpose. You can change anything else, from its typing to abilities to stats and such, but never its intended role.
For example, if Toxapex were to win a slate, in the next slate you would be able to make it a Rock / Flying type with Neuroforce, but if it were to ever stray away from playing similarly to a Toxapex, it will not be allowed.)
^^ (this rule of fun won't apply if a regular Pokemon were to be completely changed in the first slate and win via vote, so you infact could make Toxapex a speedy Rock / Flying type mixed attacker with Neuroforce, but if it wins, it cannot change back to something similar to regular Toxapex.)
Trading Post (or BlindsItems if i can ignore copyright infringement)
- Gen 9 OU
- All vanilla items are removed
- Blindsided-style submission process, where users that sign up beforehand can add 1 item to the meta.
There are three types of items you can add.
1. Readding a vanilla item exactly as-is. (ex: Heavy-Duty Boots)
2. Readding a vanilla item but with changes that makes it distinct from the original (ex: Heavy-Duty Boots, but the user is no longer immune to Stealth Rock)
3. Creating a brand-new item.
Illegal Submissions
Items can be vetoed if they are deemed too broken, or too difficult/impossible to code.
If that occurs, I will notify you that your submission will be vetoed, and that you have 1 mulligan to either submit the same item with changes made, or submit a completely new concept.
Duplicate Submissions
If multiple players submit the same item, their submissions will bonk and both will be given a mulligan to submit a new item.
(ex: 2 players submit unchanged Heavy Duty Boots, or both players submit modified Heavy Duty Boots)
If a player submits a modified item (aka #2), and another player submits the same item but vanilla (#1), only the player who submitted #1 will be forced to resubmit.
(ex: player 1 submits HDB unchanged, but player 2 submits HDB without Stealth Rock immunity, player 1 will be forced to resubmit, while player 2's submission will go through normally.)
Rules
- The submission phase will be 1 week long (or shorter if all players have successfully submitted before the deadline), and will be done through a google form.
- You may not discuss your submission with any other player before the results are revealed.
- You cannot submit an item that would somehow create a custom type, ability, move, field effect, or grant a pokemon a new form that does not exist in vanilla.
- I will require a coding assistant to help me during the submission process to help verify if subs are able to be coded.
There aren't a lot of item-centric mods in pet mods history, I think for good reason. Most people would rather want to create new pokemon across slates, rather than than new items. This is why item mods in the past like Noble Items, Item Factory, and Dollhouse unfortunately fell out of favor soon after they started. I think the best way for an item mod to start strong and potentially stay strong is through a frontloaded submission process like Blindsided or Slate 0 Iron Fist, which is what this mod would employ. There might be multiple slates depending on how many items we get per slate.
Questions
- Should items that allow alternate forms to exist (such as the Ogerpon Masks) be saved from the initial removal?
And now we're approaching the end of the fifth month, so....here goes nothing.
I have been contributing to Smogon since last year, and I have made a wide variety of ideas that no other person would even dare of thinking of. Over time, I have learnt what makes a competitive Pokémon, by adapting for the rule: What is the metagame that I am contributing this idea to missing? I am also quite resourceful when it comes to managing projects in the past, as you can see by my two solomods getting updates at a monthly basis.
So, straight from the Pet Mods Workshop, we have... Pet Mod Name: Virtual Paradise: Living In Harmony Pet Mod Concept: Imagine a land where Pokémon, Digimon, and Tamagotchi could all co-exist in living harmony. This mod aims to add Digimon and Tamagotchi to the existing Scarlet and Violet metagame, to see how they would perform together! Explanation: Every odd numbered slate is a free slate with a specific goal, where people can submit up to three Digimon or Tamagotchi that fit the slate rules as if they were competitive Pokémon. The three with the most votes make it in! Then, every even numbered slate, EITHER....
2-3 of the Digimon/Tamagotchi have already been selected by me, and you must submit what you think they can do to the metagame! (For example, if the three chosen were Agumon, Gabumon, and Patamon, you could submit one for Agumon, one for Gabumon, and one for Patamon) During even numbered slates, you can also nominate up to two Pokémon to join the metagame as well with any change you wish. For voting, each Digimon/Tamagotchi will get a separate vote, with the one with the most votes being the chosen spread!
OR, is a free slate, except your entries must fulfil a special condition listed out by me. Miscellaneous: Terastalization is banned. This is a micrometa, and I'd like a metagame with an equal amount of viable Pokémon, Digimon, and Tamagotchi. An important lesson to learn here is to make sure that your contributions don't outclass existing Pokémon! Don't forget: All of my old ideas are also in consideration too!
Pet Mod Name: [Gen 3] Shadow Colosseum Pet Mod Concept: A Gen 3 Orre Colosseum (which is just Gen 3 VGC) metagame where the mechanics and moves of Shadow Pokemon from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness are added to the game. Explanation: I've been in a bit of a Shadow Pokemon mood right now and I was thinking to myself that XD greatly expanded the mechanics of Shadow Pokemon but they aren't usable in Link Battles (for obvious reasons given the plot, but still), so naturally one would wonder how their mechanics would fare in a real PvP setting. However, there are a lot of pretty nutty things about Shadow Pokemon (namely that Shadow moves are super effective against all non-Shadows and also Hyper Mode from Colosseum being one of the most insane mechanics ever), so they would have to be tweaked a bit, along with deciding what Pokemon could even be Shadows in the first place. This would be decided in a Slate 0 similar to how TeraMax's first slate decided the mechanics of Tera and Dynamax there. After that, there would be slates to adapt every Shadow move from XD into the game, as well as potentially adding new Shadow moves.
Shadow Pokemon Mechanics Submission (wouldn't really have a template, you'd just describe how your mechanic works)
- Any Pokemon can become a Shadow Pokemon using a button a la Terastallization. Only 1 Pokemon can become a Shadow Pokemon per team.
- Attacks used by Shadow Pokemon have 1.1x power but they also take 1.1x more damage from attacks.
- Any Pokemon can use Shadow-typed moves, but Shadow Pokemon have STAB on them, on top of the 1.1x universal power boost.
- Shadow moves hit all Pokemon neutrally, except for being resisted by other Shadow Pokemon.
- The universal power boost Shadow Pokemon gain is increased to 1.3x when the Pokemon is confused. When confused, all moves used by Shadow Pokemon deal recoil damage equal 1/4 of the damage they deal.
Type: Shadow Effect: Summons Shadow Sky for 5 turns, a weather that damages all non-Shadow Pokemon for 1/8 of their max HP at the end of every turn. Weather Ball becomes 100 BP and Shadow-type. Priority: 0 Flags (ex: Contact, Sound): N/A Potential Pokémon With This Move:
Miscellaneous:
- Probably wouldn't start immediately after being approved cuz I gotta learn the Orre Colosseum meta first or find a council that already knows it. (i am not letting futureproofing happen again)
- There would be additional slates depending on what specific changes to the Shadow Pokemon mechanic wins. For example, there would be Pokemon slates if Shadow Pokemon were made into alternate forms for certain Pokemon like in the old mod Return to Orre. Either way, there would also be a slate for Shadow Lugia itself, but it'd only be legal in a restricted metagame.
- There could also be additional slates for abilities and non-Shadow moves that interact with Shadow Pokemon.
Pet Mod Name: Clauses Clans Pet Mod Concept: Involves around making two new custom Clauses, then a tag team tourney plays to determine a Clause replacing one of the two. Take place in a region with randomly picked Pokémon, new regional forms and perhaps new evolutions. Explanation:
This Pet Mod takes inspiration of @Beaf Cultist’s Hide and Seaking, more specifically the special Clause slates where players make new clauses, and then the Seakers find them out until only one clause remain. Clause Clans will do the concept very differently.
You are most likely familiar with the term “clause” within the Smogon community, and this Pet Mod revolve around two custom clauses made in the first slate. These custom clauses can be almost anything as long as it is impactful (i.e. doesn’t signficiantly impact too little Pokémon), interesting, competitive and respectful of Global Smogon rules. The Regional Dex will be revealed before starting the first slate, allowing the participants to determine what would work and not work for the Regional Dex.
For the Regional Dex, the Pokémon are randomly picked through this random Pokémon generator (as in like a randomizer, not the other kind of generation), with Legendary, Mythical, Ultra Beast, and Paradox Pokémon disabled, and then randomly genetated Pokémon from the first two groups until we get at least two Legendary groups and two Mythical Pokémon. Then, Regional Forms out of a few more randomly picked Pokémon are created to fill the gaps between types. Individiual Ultra Beasts and Paradox Pokémon may be randomly added later on depending on the poll’s most voted answer.
The Regional Dex will be revealed to the Grand Masters (Council), so they can determine the additional Pokémon with regional forms alongside the original, then released to the public in it's finalized state before the first slate, to discourage clauses that just boost low tier Pokémon and more on creativity. Then once the first slate is completed, we determine the theorical “Tier List” with the public not unlike the official Smogon tiers, taking those clauses in mind. We go from Ubers, Top, High, Middle, Low, Bottom and Unranked, with Pokémon being adjusted individually so they have a niche within each tiers except Ubers, which plays more like traditional Ubers formats. Unranked is not an actual tier, but rather a dishonorable designation; think of the unofficial “Untiered” or Pokémon that received blunt “Do Not Use” reviews.
New evolutions are given to a few Unranked Pokémon in their only or first stage evolution and lower than average BST as a last resort in order for them to shine, all without rising the original’s BST too much and potentially messing up with one’s memory muscle. For Untiered Pokémon already reaching a second stage evolution (i.e. Beedrill, Wigglytuff), those instead have more drastic adjustments while staying mostly true to their base stat distribution. The Pokémon receiving new evolutions can still benefit clauses, but as stated before, clauses that only benefit Untiered Pokémon is not recommanded.
Then, people can participate in a single-elimination Bo3 tournament with “clans”, with one member being picked to represent each clan. Each round of a tournament picks a random Tier, including Ubers, but excluding Unranked, and no tier are picked twice in a single tournament. Pokémon from lower tiers can be used for the selected tiers, but not higher ones, just like the Smogon tiers. The 1st place player of the tournament consults with their clanmates privately (either Discord or Smogon DMs) to determine their new custom clause that replaces one of the current two custom clauses.
In events of the representating player not available or will not be for any disclosed reason, any of their teammate can substitute. If no teammates subs the absent player on time, the team is disqualified for the tournament. This is to prevent the tournament from dragging on. Additionally, in an event that either of the finalists’ team got disqualified, a “battle for third” take place to allow both lost semi-finalists for a redemption and to prevent an easy victory for the finalist.
New adjustments are made based on feedbacks, and the cycle repeats, allowing for an ever evolving metagame. Miscellaneous:
Q: “Wouldn’t that be too similar to Trainer Classes?” A: The difference between Trainer Classes and the custom clauses is that the latter affects both sides and are constantly active, while most Trainer Classes only affect the player and comes in a wide variety, but only one is used per battle.
Q: “What would you describe as unhealthy and / or uncompetitive?” A: Any clause that would shift the tide of the battle too drastically or make a well-liked mechanic useless (i.e. Knock Off on switch-in, as it invalidate items), would cause the battle to lose it’s pace (i.e. Regenerator on top of Pokémon’s Ability), or adds even more impactful RNG would be considered as either unhealthy or uncompetitive. Overtly complex clauses, as well as those very difficult to code, are discouraged from being submitted as well.
Q: “What happens if Smeargle’s in the Pet Mod?” A: Due to fundamental issues Smeargle represents through it’s move Sketch, it’ll be permanently be placed in Bottom so it won’t receive special treatments. It will also likely to be exempt from any custom clause if it would proved too troublesome by that clause (i.e. all have Prankster and banning Sleep isn’t enough) or can cause loophole abuses.
Q: “Is <generational gimmick> in this Pet Mod?” A: None of them is in the Pet Mod initially, but can be implemented through custom clauses, and only to specific Pokémon to prevent already high-tier Pokémon from spiraling out of control. Making the custom clause only bringing a generational gimmick to all Pokémon would not be interesting, and making “Mega Evolution for all” would end up becoming a nightmarish chore for coding, and we rather not take risk ripping off Mix-and-Megas.
That said, if a clause that involve Mega Evolving only certain species, provide access to ONLY Gigantamaxing or signature Z-Moves, or activate them through a different, universal method, then a few more may be added to help out some high BST Untiered Pokémon.
Q: “Can my clause be based on <insert Other Metagame here>?” A: I prefer if it affects only specific species or type to avoid overlapping too much with that OM. As an aside, we try not to overlap too much with Super Smash OMs in terms of Pokémon benefitted or hindered by the clauses.
Q: “What’s the process behind regional forms and new evolutions?” A: The regional forms are decided by the Grand Masters to fill in the gaps of severely underrepresentated types, especially if a type has a few Pokémon that are quickbanned to Ubers. Which Pokémon are picked up for regional forms are either random or hand-picked.
The new evolutions are already explained earlier, but we try to maintain the original Pokémon’s identity for the new evolution with additional lore / details to justify what moves, Ability/ies or even type it have over the original. It can also be a way to “diverge” from other Pokémon that would outperform the original in many ways, including their intended role.
Q: “Should we expect Ultra Beast and / or Paradox Pokémon in this Pet Mod?” A: Not in the first tournament because of their absurd power level compared to even non-Ubers Legendary Pokémon, but a poll will be made in the meanwhile to either allow a few of them (randomly picked of course), or all of either of the group. Past Paradox and Future Paradox Pokémon are considered as seperate groups.
Q: “Why some Pokémon’s name being underlined in the spreadsheet?” A: There are Pokémon that aren’t in the result, but added nonetheless due to being an important counterpart to a Pokémon. This also applies to Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon, but not necessarily Ultra Beasts nor Paradox Pokémon.
PSA (July 22th 2025): This submission shall no longer be directly approved as a Pet Mod as I now decided that it’ll work better as a Solomod. If you don’t mind, see you at the Solomod threads!
Before getting to the newly approved mods, I wanna note that since this round of approvals is very late and also very small, we will have another round of approvals in July as a makeup, so don't worry too much if your ideas weren't approved in this round, as you'll have another chance very very soon. The round of approvals after that will still be the standard ~3 months after this one.
Ideas that encourage new kinds of teambuilding like Trainer Support for example are always interesting to me, so this should be no different. Approved.
Like Trainer Support and Type Stacking, I like the idea of creating new ways to build teams through mod mechanics and basing it off of the already existing Combo move idea from Contests makes it simple and interesting. Approved.

People tend to love Blindsided-like mods and doing this with Items, a historically hard element to work with in Pet Mods, sounds very interesting, curious to see how this turns out. Approved.

"I'm not gonna waste time tooting my own horn here, the other mods liked it and people liked the concept [when I posted it in the Workshop and Discord], so yeah. Approved."
That's all for now, but like I said, the next approvals are very soon, so keep the ideas rolling in! See you soon!
With Virtual Paradises being rejected (But who knows, maybe it might get another chance in a future approval wave) and Stars Beyond having way too many Pokémon at the end to be balanced...I present to you all a NEW idea. Pet Mod Name: VGCRRR - Video Game Championships Reduce Reuse Rotate Pet Mod Concept: The Video Game Championships, but for Rotation Battles! In this micrometa, people will modify and design old and new Pokémon that, when put together, will create a functional metagame based around Rotation Battles. Explanation: Ahhhhhh, Rotation Battles...people always thought that they were more of a generational gimmick than an actual new feature, even if the concept of rotating three Pokémon around is downright awesome. I mean, after Generation 5, in the last generation it appeared in, in one game, it only appears in an area where you have to win in as little turns as possible, while in another it is used, outside of battle facilities, a grand total of ONCE. Some people even forget that they exist nowadays simply because the Pokémon Company didn't put them in future generations. In fact, I don't even think they are coded into Pokémon Showdown! But, with this Micrometa, that changes. Hopefully, with the community's help, we can create a functional Rotation Battle format together! Miscellaneous: This micrometa will be based off OU, and will have no past generational gimmicks, just like how Rotation Battles debuted in Generation 5. I will be needing someone who can record the winners, and a coder to program in all of the winning Pokémon and moves, as well as, maybe, even Rotation Battles themselves, if this gets approved!
Pet Mod Name: [Gen 3] Hoenn Echoes Spreadsheet (thank you to Gekokeso for letting me steal)
Pet Mod Concept: A mod based on Generation 3 Ubers which aims to breathe some life into the tier by reducing RNG elements, increasing Pokemon diversity, and balancing the tier around the Pokemon that are already strong.
Explanation: This mod will aim to make Gen 3 Ubers a more enjoyable tier to play, as in its current state it is a victim of copious amounts of RNG elements. I have already made some changes to attempt to reduce that, which can be found in the above spreadsheet. While the current tier has some room for experimentation (and there are a lot of Pokemon that you definitely CAN bring if you really want to), it often feels very restricted in what you can realistically use while still actually trying to win the game. Plus, adding some things from newer generations (i.e. new items such as Assault Vest, abilities like Solar Power, Pokemon like Scolipede, or even original additions) would provide an interesting spin to the tier. The primary goal of this mod is to keep the core gameplay experience of Gen 3 Ubers, but to give it a twist.
Slates are intended to be mostly guided, but open-ended. Since the purpose of the mod is to keep the balance of the tier intact, the tier's council will give a "guide" for a slate, for example. buffing/adding Rain Users, and then users would submit their ideas that would fit into that framework. New additions should not be metagame defining, and to ensure this, when making a submission, users will need to list how their submission can be properly handled by the tools already present in the tier. Example, Slate is Rain
Name: Kingdra Type: Water/Dragon Abilities: Swift Swim Stats: 75/95/95/105/95/85, BST: 550 Moveset Additions/Subtractions: Dragon Pulse Reasoning: Kingdra as it stands is completely unable to function, as it is walled entirely by the Latis barring an Ice Beam freeze. Giving it access to Dragon STAB and a slight Sp.Atk increase will allow it to apply pressure to the Latis and make it able to make progress. Checks/Counters: Kingdra is completely shut down by Rayquaza as a sweeper thanks to Air Lock, fails to make good progress vs Blissey with Sun support, and struggles to do much meaningful damage to Kyogre.
Miscellaneous:
- I have Zero experience with coding and will absolutely need help on that front
- I already have a council assembled of myself, Xrn, and qsns, and if somebody else feels like they would like to contribute and has either ample ADV Ubers or old gen pet mods experience (or both!) then feel free to ask
- Assume vanilla Gen 3 mechanics are kept unless explicitly stated otherwise
With that out of the way, here are the new mods!
Ideas that encourage new kinds of teambuilding like Trainer Support for example are always interesting to me, so this should be no different. Approved.
Thank you for your approval, I've been very busy these months with university and work, but I'll open the thread in first days of July.
I also need someone to be part of the council, so if anyone wants to join, just lemme know (here, in DM or you can find me on the Pet Mod Discord server and in various other servers around).
Concept: You are an evil scientist and you are tasked with creating an invasive species in an environment that is most suitable for it. This meta will only start with the tier sovereign once it is made, and new pokemon will be added explicitly with it in mind
Explanation: The Tier Sovereign will be created via a few shorter slates. While not fully decided, my current idea for a 3 slate creation period is as such: Stats, Name, and Flavoring | Type and Abilities | Fully fleshed out movepool and (potential) Customs. This will be done to help split the creation process to get a few different perspectives in it, as I find a “winner takes all” mentality to decide the most central factor of a metagame is kinda boring. Like if a new CAP was decided by one person.
Once the tier sovereign is created, the power level will be decided already based on the previous factors, and future mons will strive to stay below that power level / viability. Additionally for fun, future mons will somehow be related / branch off the original lore of the tier sovereign idea. This part will be optional in order to not deter people who just casually sub and don’t wanna write lore and rather focus on the pokemon itself.
Idea of Rules / Restrictions regarding submissions after the tier sovereign:
No customs past the tier sovereign will be allowed as it generally creates a higher power level, this is subject to change depending on my ability to do stuff. Additionally there is plenty of moves to be explored from base games that also allow for a more interesting metagame to be developed
Tier additions will be existing Pokemon, as it is easier and more understandable this way. Everything else though can be customized but during submissions, the Pokemon submitted will be the base case and will be assumed to take from the base values of that Pokemon. (Ie. Moves abilities and stats)
New tier additions cannot infringe on any viability / usage the tier sovereign has. This is especially important due to the entire conceptuality of the tier riding off of one mon consistently and always being a consideration for your team and
At some point, good enough reasoning / replay proof will be required in order to avoid incidents where the sovereign could lose viability, by a person who submits pokemon just to submit rather than to contribute to meta diversity
Stronger coverage moves against the tier sovereign will be mitigated to avoid 8 removal phasing movepools, and to require smarter move usage. This is a rule that is subject to opinion so this would be put up to council if this issue ever occurs in submissions and can be an explicit veto reason. Essentially don’t add another spikes user when 2-3 already exist. TRs were a mistake and only god (me) can rectify this.
Submissions must have full movepools, as working with mons with only viable moves tend to reduce the functionality of them and make them less enjoyable to utilize in your average team. Be creative !
My overall Meta View:
As most micrometas are, the amount of pokemon is subject to change, but the current projection is around 10-15 submission slates with 3 winners each, leading to around 31-46 Pokemon in the metagame.
If a certain Pokemon is shown to be broken, or isn’t good enough, changes will be decided based on both council and player voices to get a proper adjustment to where it can fit back into the metagame. While changes will be done to increase viability, it will be less common than dealing with actual problematic mons to the tier structuring, as less viable mons that are harder to use is an inevitability and simply cannot be avoided.
The power level is subject to change but the tier sovereign should be at a rough OU level while others should be UU or below level
TLDR: Submissions overall should either strive to work for or against the tier sovereign, with checks/counters to the sovereign being somewhat limited, to preserve fundamentals and allow for a unique competitive environment to develop.
Notes:
I will attempt to code this myself, may need help for the first few slates to get it down.
If anyone is interested in helping this meta develop, I do need people for a council who can be active once this tier starts to be able to help guide it through its creation
As this is quite a new concept it will definitely be experimental at times, so unhealthy meta developments will occur basically no matter what one does. I will attempt to handle these to the best of my ability.
I do hope this gets accepted as it’s an interesting concept of a mod that intentionally breaks balance rather than unintentionally, which these mods tend to be somewhat well received. It’s also my first mod idea I’m actually submitting.
Concept: A crossover between various existing Gen 9 Pet Mods & Solomods!
In this Pet Mod, users submit existing Pokémon from other Mods in the forum. You could, for an example, submit Garbodor from TeraMax, Cardantis from Paleomons or Iron Meta from Fusion Evolution. This also applies to items for Mods that create those, such as Dollhouse and Trading Post. The goal is to create a wacky metagame that showcases the creativity and variety within our creations, celebrating another great generation of Mods and letting us look back at all we've achieved as a community during Gen 9.
Some considerations:
- Gen 9 OU Clauses. Only Pokémon from Mods based on Gen 9 formats are allowed. This Mod also will not apply any chanegs to the type chart or to existing field effects. If a Mod uses Hail for its move or abilities, it will be converted to Snow for the purposes of Super Smash Mods.
- For a Pokémon to be submitted, it must have something in the Mod that changes it from its vanilla counterpart. (You cannot sub Landorus-Therian to this Mod if it is coming from a Mod that doesn't apply any changes to Landorus-Therian)
- A Pokémon's ability and moves will function the same way they do in their respective Mods. Submisisons must highlight these changes, as well as any custom moves or ablities. (For an example,Worry Seed will be an attacking move if used by a Pokémon from GlaceMons, because that is a change made to the move in that mod. Pokémon from other mods will have the usual Worry Seed. This applies for any move or ability altered by a Mod)
- Pokémon from any Mod can use new items. The exception to this are items that activate Mega Evolution, Terastal or Dynamax - those are limited to Pokémon from the same Mod as the item. (a Pokémon from Fusion Evolution can't use Vaporemons' Tera Shard or TeraMax's Wishing Piece)
- The same species of Pokémon can be submitted so long as it has different origin mods. (For an example, you may submit Kabutops from Paleomons and Kabutops from GlaceMons. They will be counted as separate forms)
- Custom Field Effects and Custom Types are not allowed.
- Mods that rely on changes to the core gameplay, such as Jollymod, are not allowed.
- April Fools Mods, such as Fusion Evolution Dondozo, are not allowed.
- If a Pokémon can Mega Evolve or Terastalize in its origin Mod, it will be granted access to the mechanic here. Pokémon from TeraMax will also be able to access Dynamax and Gigantamax the same way they can in their Mod. Similar to moves, these mechanics will depend on their origin Mod - Terastal will work differently for TeraMax mons and TeraForming mons, for an example.
- Each slate people will be able to nominate up to 5 Pokémon from other Mods, along with 2 items.
- Pokémon will be as faithful as they can to their origin Mod at the time they are being submitted. If their origin Mod makes changes to the Pokémon after its been implemented in Smash, it is up to Smash's council to decide whether or not it is necessary to also apply the changes to Smash.
- Initial goal of 10 slates with about 5 winners per slate for a total of around 50 Pokémon.
Once more, with reeling...again! Pet Mod Name: Like a Muse to Flame (Resubmission) Pet Mod Concept: Remember when certain Pokémon were originally revealed, people started to assume the movepools for them, their abilities already having been revealed? Remember that one time Corviknight was playable in Showdown before Pokémon Sword and Shield's release, before it's full movepool or it's stats were even shown? Now, in this Pet Mod...your assumptions can become reality to create Smogon's next superstars! Explanation: For each slate, the sprites of three Fakemon (Made by me) (And sometimes, their pre-evolutions or even some alternative forms) will be shown...and that's it. No name, no typing, nothing. It's up to you to pick up to three of the designs, and create a name and typing for each of them, as well as their abilities, movepools, and roles in the metagame. After a while, voting will commence for each of the three designs: The ones with the most votes for each design will win and become the Pokémon's real design! Miscellaneous: This will be a micrometa, so only the new Pokémon will take part in it.
We finally feel that you're ready to try your hand at running a Pet Mod and of the many ideas you've shared over the past year or so, this early idea was our favorite. In most mods, we usually make the Fakemon then someone makes a sprite for it, so inversing that formula makes for a really neat and novel concept that can hopefully engage our community's many creative minds. Approved.
Seems like a pretty fun concept, makes for a simple method of making an ever-evolving metagame in a similar but much more direct vein as Natural Selection, interested to see how this goes. Approved.
We've been lacking in big past gen mods for awhile now and I'm extremely interested to see how this strong-looking council runs a Pet Mod, plus we also don't have many Pet Mods with this high of a power level out-the-gate, which will be fun to see develop. Approved.

With likely about a year left of Gen 9, now seems like the perfect time to bring back the beloved Smash Mods concept, as perfectly exemplified by the massive list of available Pet Mods and Solomods to pull mons from, should be a fun time as always. Approved.
