The UU Feedback Team
All aspects of UnderUsed—the forum, the room, and the discord—are banding together to develop to be the best they can with a combination of transparency and user feedback! The leaders and prominent figures of every aspect of the UU community will be making an effort to listen to you! Don't be afraid, they won't bite.

What does this mean? We're giving community members an avenue to have their comments, concerns, and feedback heard. Feel free to contact any of the prominent community members below by whatever method of private communication you deem best if you have anything you think we can improve on, be it in the PS room, the forums, or the discord! Every real suggestion will be considered, and we will respect everyone who has feedback to give. The relevant parties will make concrete improvements based on the feedback we get whenever they can.

List of community members you should PM suggestions to:
A Cake Wearing A Hat
Hogg
Estarossa
Lilburr

As for actual rules, all the rules that are applicable to the entire Smogon site also apply here. Additionally, take note of the following:

- We do things a little differently around here. Unlike what you're probably used to, tiering decisions are made pretty liberally in UU, so you will probably have strong feelings about it. Expressing your feelings regarding specific suspects in PM or in public is fine, as long as you do so in a calm and respectful manner. There is a posting guide written by Lilburr directly below. Give it a read if you are new or need clarification of what constitutes as a high-quality post meant to contribute to the discussion.

- Do not make individual threads without UU Moderator Approval. Direct all new Project/Tournament requests to moderators Lilburr, Indigo Plateau, Hilomilo, TSR, Estarossa and Adaam

- Stick to UU stuff.

- Don't be an idiot. Respect each other.

Hi, and welcome to UU! We have an excellent community here, and myself and others will often get questions from newer players about how they can contribute, integrate themselves, and make friends within the tier. They've also asked how to improve their posts so that they can get more recognition from the current playerbase, which is great! We love seeing new players thrive, and you couldn't have picked a more friendly community to start with. So, if you're looking to improve on your posts and make them stand out, this is the thread for you.

Dos and Don'ts

Do:
Support your argument with facts.
Damage calculations, replays, and other hard data makes for a great way to support your post and show people that you're more than just talk.
Present yourself in a respectable manner. There's no need to be entirely formal; this forum, despite being a place for serious discussion, is fairly casual. However, that doesn't mean you should treat every post as a joke. Make sure your post is well-written and thought out.
Lurk for a while and see how other members post. Some of our longest-standing community members are still around, and they've learned quite a lot over the years, so their posts tend to be of very high quality. Learn from them and implement what they do into your own posts.

Don't:
Post one-liners or uninformed arguments.
These add nothing to a discussion and will really just end up getting deleted and, if continued, you'll probably get infracted. Your post should have substance, and should be more than just, "Wow, Terrakion is really broken. Ban please." Instead, you should construct an argument with replays, calculations, and informed thoughts about your statement.
Use generic "if" or "what" statements. Speculation is fine in some scenarios, but hypotheticals don't help anybody. Something like "If the council unbans Alolan Ninetales, Grimmsnarl might drop to RU" is not really relevant to current UU and shouldn't be talked about as a result. Instead, give your thoughts on the current metagame and the tier as a whole, and give your opinion on new developments as they happen. There are some exceptions here - for example, talking about Pokemon you expect to improve following a large tier shift is absolutely okay, but that's only because the tier shift has already happened. If you're unsure, don't be hesitant to ask a member of the feedback team!
Attack other users. This one should go without saying, but ad hominem arguments not only weaken what you're saying, but will also result in a swift and severe punishment. It's fine to disagree with somebody, but keep it civil. This is not a recommendation, it is a rule.
Talk about other tiers. Mentioning something about OU, RU etc. in passing is fine, but those tiers are not the same as UU. As such, posts with statements such as "the council should unban Haxorus because it's not good in OU" are not appropriate. Instead, focus on the current UU metagame; if you think Haxorus should be unbanned, give strong arguments that are based in UU, not in OU.

Formatting
Newer posters often ask us about how to format their posts - this includes BBcode, as well as Smogon's specific commands. Here is a short list of the most common ones you'll use:

Code:
:ss/pokemonname:

This one will give you a 3D animated sprite of any given pokemon. For example:
:ss/krookodile:

Specific formes of a Pokemon use a hyphen rather than a space, and you use the full forme name. For example, if you wanted a sprite of Galarian Weezing, you would use
Code:
:ss/weezing-galar:
:ss/weezing-galar:

You can also do this with sprites for older generations if you want! For example, here is Rotom-W's BW sprite.
Code:
:bw/rotom-wash:
:bw/rotom-wash:

The list of generation prefixes is as follows: rb, gs, rs, dp, bw, xy, sm, ss

Finally, some newer generation Pokemon like Mimikyu and Noivern have animated BW-style sprites, but the ":bw/mimikyu" command won't work with them because they didn't exist in those games. You can find their sprites over here and include them via image tags. For example:
Code:
[img]https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/gen5ani/mimikyu.gif[/img]
mimikyu.gif

Minisprites are pretty simple; for the ones used in the Generation 7 and prior games, you can simply do:
Code:
:pokemonname:
and it'll give it to you: :cobalion:

For the higher resolution sprites that exist in the Generation 8 games, you can use the Sprite Converter provided by FullLifeGames, or simply use image tags with the following:
Code:
[IMG]https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-swsh/icon/XXX.png[/IMG]
where "XXX" is the Pokemon's National Dex number. For example, if I wanted to use Cobalion again - which is #638 in the National Dex - I would use:

Code:
[IMG]https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-swsh/icon/638.png[/IMG]
638.png

Spoilers are great for when you want to add a large amount of text or a huge image, in order to help keep your post more concise as at a glance. Smogon's BBcode editor has a button built in for this.
DpygSYZ.png

Alternatively, you can use one of the following (case insensitive):
Code:
[SPOILER="Spoiler Name"]content[/SPOILER]
[HIDE="Spoiler Name"]content[/HIDE]

Oftentimes, when constructing an argument or just responding to someone, you'll want to quote a post so it's clear who you're talking to. This is most easily done by clicking on the little button in the bottom-right corner of someone's post that says "Reply":
LuCd5GV.png

You can choose to cut out part of a quote so that it's easier to focus on what you're responding to; simply remove the text that doesn't pertain to your reply.

Another method is to simply highlight part of someone's post, which will allow you to quote that specific part:

Where your posts should go

It can be difficult to distinguish where any given post should be, particularly when you're new and you're overwhelmed by the sheer amount of threads in the forum. Here's a quick guide to each relevant discussion thread.

Now Playing: Metagame Discussion
This is a general thread where you can talk about the current UU meta and its potential developments. Posts about Pokemon you feel may have a niche in the meta can be redirected here, in addition to currently viable Pokemon that are improving, getting worse, or anything else along those lines. It should be noted, though, that general questions such as "What's Noivern's best set in the current metagame?" should be redirected to our next thread.

SQSA: Simple Questions, Simple Answers
There's no such thing as a silly question. In this thread, you can ask any simple question you want. This includes questions like "where can I find the UU Cores thread?", "what is Lycanroc-D's best set in UU?" and so on. Don't be afraid to ask whatever you want! A notable exception, though, is asking for team advice; this is better saved for the Rate My Team subforum - be sure to read their rules!

SS UU Viability Rankings
This is a comprehensive list of all viable Pokemon in the tier and how they compare to each other; it's also a place where you can discuss the metagame, explain why any given Pokemon has improved or gotten worse lately, and lobby for shifts in the rankings. Posts like "I don't think Slowking is as good as it was before, it should drop to A rank" go here.

Sample Teams / Team Bazaar
If you've built a team and want to show it off but aren't really looking for criticism on it, these are the threads for you! The Sample Teams thread is used for teams that are tested, proven, and overall very good, as it serves to be a resource for newer players looking to get into the tier. The Team Bazaar, on the other hand, is completely unrestricted; you can post any team you want in there! Be sure to have proof to back up your team's success if you want it to be added to the Sample Teams thread, but feel free to post to your heart's content in the Team Bazaar.

If you have any more questions, don't worry; we're here to help you! You can contact a member of the UU Feedback Team or one of the Forum Moderators if you're confused about anything. The UU Feedback Team currently consists of:
Alternatively, you can join the UU Discord server and ask any of our lovely community members for help - there will almost always be someone there to oblige you!

A whopping four six! months after our last circuit thread, the time has come to announce our official 2021 circuit! We are still maintaining the same basic structure organized by season, followed by an end-of-year championship for the top performers in the circuit. However, we are making a couple of changes for the 2021 season:
  • We're shuffling the calendar around a bit. The new unnamed team tournament that's set to take place later this year has put things in an awkward spot, as Smogon Grand Slam and Smogon Classic have also switches places to accommodate it. For this reason, we're changing up the UU Circuit's schedule as follows:
  • UU Open is taking place in March. Normally this would happen in June, but as mentioned, the official tournament schedule has changed a bit.
  • The UU Ladder Tournament is moving to June. Switching slots with UU Open makes the most sense here, since it interferes with less of our current schedule that way.
  • Future changes may occur. This year is a tiny bit messy, so we might see tournaments such as UU Majors taking place a couple of weeks earlier than usual. Nothing too major though, pun intended.

As was discussed in this thread, the winner of our 2021 UU Championships gets an additional prize: they will receive a ribbon
circuit_smogonmeta.png.m.2
on their badgeset!

The official 2021 tour circuit kicked off today on January 18th with the first tournament of the year: UU Masters III.

UNDERUSED OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE - 2021

  • WINTER: UnderUsed Masters III (January)
  • SPRING: Smogon Grand Slam X - UnderUsed Open (March)
  • SUMMER: UnderUsed Ladder Tournament (June), UnderUsed Classic V (July)
  • FALL: UnderUsed Majors VI (September / October)
  • YEAR END: UnderUsed Championships V (December)

No spreadsheet for now, of course, but keep your eyes peeled for that.

Tournament & Project Proposals

How do I submit a tournament proposal?
  • Hosts must PM their proposal to Indigo Plateau , Lilburr, Hilomilo, TSR, Adaam and Estarossa and receive approval before posting. Use the template below to submit your idea.
  • The entire tournament, including sign-ups, all rounds, and results should be posted in the same thread (i.e. no posting each round in a separate thread).
  • Deadlines must be adhered to. Extensions may be granted as necessary, but rounds should be posted on schedule. Post unfinished pairings when extensions to games are given (ex: [player 1 vs player 2] vs player 3). The maximum length of a round is one week, but three or four days is good enough for smaller tournaments.
  • Hosts are expected to be active throughout the duration of their tournament in order to update pairings and make substitutions when necessary.
PM subject: UU Forum Tournament Proposal

PM body:

Pokemon Showdown Chatroom
Click on the Underused Room to join our official discussion room for the Underused tier. A lot of detailed discussion and friendly/competitive matches take place here. It is heavily recommended that all users interested in Underused come here and join in on the discussions.

UU Discord
Our public Discord chat; less popular than our Showdown simulator, but this platform is good for communicating with more experienced UU players and casually talking about UU or other fun things. Note, this is more or less our IRC replacement moving forward.

UnderUsed Usage Statistics
The usage statistics show what's currently being used in Underused and how common it appears. A staple when teambuilding. Also shows playstyles and common movesets.

SS UU C&C Subforum
The Corrections & Contributions hub for 8th Gen UU Analyses to be posted on Smogon can be found here. Insight and knowledge of Pokemon is greatly appreciated for helping with in-progress analyses. Come lend a hand, or write your own!

SS UU NP Thread
One of the main discussion threads regarding the Underused tier as a whole, with a vast degree of fundamental topics at hand. Tier shifts and suspect tests are commonly discussed here. This thread is taken rather seriously, and it is best that you check out our posting guide before making any sort of post.

Council Minutes & Community Surveys
Want to know what discussions the UU Tiering Council has been having? Wanna know what antics they're up to? This is the thread for that. This thread also lists community surveys, where anyone can give their opinion!

SS UU Viability Ranking Thread - run by Hilomilo
This thread's goal is to sort every Pokemon with viability in the SS UU metagame into ranks based on their specific value in the tier. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to post their thoughts regarding the rankings, which will then be discussed by our viability team when putting updates together. In updating the thread, we do our best to refine the rankings to what most accurately represents the metagame. Updates do not occur on a scheduled basis, and will instead happen when the metagame has developed to a point that several accurate changes can be made.

SS UU Sample Teams Thread - run by Estarossa
The purpose of this thread is to archive successful UU teams, intended to help new players get acclimated to the metagame and different playstyles. The subtle differences in each tier can make UU seem overwhelming, even to seasoned veterans of other tiers. Here, you can post your own team for archiving for new UU players to use.

SS UU Team Bazaar - run by A Cake Wearing A Hat
This thread is a more laid-back place to share teams with less rigorous quality control than Sample Teams. Feel free to share what you've been building here! Rejected sample team submissions go here, as well.

UU Old Gens Hub Resource - run by r0ady
This thread contains resources for the UnderUsed tiers of all of the older generations of UU—GSC, ADV, DPP, BW, ORAS, and USUM. This thread will also serve as a place to hold discussion about the older generations of UU. Each post contains Viability Rankings, sample teams, and a list of mechanics of the generation that is different from Gen 8.

UnderUsed Hall of Fame
If you've won an official UU tour, your name will appear here! Making it on this list is no easy task.

SS UU Speedlist - run by Moutemoute
This thread will be a quick-access Speed list of all Pokemon in the UU Metagame (that includes any viable Pokemon!) based on the Speed stats of their sets. If you want to Speed creep something, use this thread as a reference on what you need to creep, you creeper.

SS UU Role Compendium - run by Moutemoute
This thread displays the roles that Pokemon in UU commonly perform, for an easy reference when building on what can do what! Feel free to suggest anything in the thread if something seems to be missing or out of place.

SS UU Cores - run by vivalospride and Lilburr
The purpose of this thread is for the community to post and discuss various cores that work well in the metagame. Cores are sets of two or three Pokemon that generally work well together on a team, covering each other's weaknesses and playing towards each other's strengths.

SS UU Teambuilding Lab - run by vivalospride
Get other people to make teams for you around the things you want!

Global Smogon Rules
The boring part of the forum, but these rules, and knowing who not to provoke, are a safe bet to becoming a positive presence on the subforums.

Tournaments - A current list of ongoing official and unofficial Underused Tournaments - the schedule for official tournaments can be found here, along with the request forms for hosting unofficial subforum tournaments.
Official Tournaments:

SS UU Tournament/Project Proposals & Schedules
This thread is meant to assist users that are interested in hosting a tour or running a project. All proposals need to follow the guidelines listed in this thread in order to be looked at. If you're interested in substantially contributing to the UU sub-forum, this is a good place to start.

Projects - A current list of ongoing Underused projects designed to help you participate. All of these threads are run and maintained by known UU contributors; please contact the appropriate project leader for any questions or concerns. Player Interview (thread varies) - run by Moutemoute
Moutemoute interviews a prominent user from the UU community, and then we get to ask as many questions as they're willing to answer! Ask anything! I'm sure they won't mind.

UU Ladder Factory - run by BigFatMantis and Crushy Stuff
Hit the ladder with some unique Pokemon sets and get points based on how well you climb up, earning your place as Employee of the Month™!

Break This Team - run by Estarossa
Most metagame-defining teams may seem perfect on the surface, but they all have their undeniable flaws, and this project aims to help point out those weak links. Each week, a team will be posted that was built by someone invested in the metagame, and the participants will then try to break this team with a core made of just two Pokémon.

Victim of the Week v2 - run by Monky25
Even the Pokemon that are on the top of a metagame have answers that exploit their flaws, and this thread is dedicated to discovering all of them. Each week, the hosts will post a set of a Pokemon and the participants will have a few days to submit a check or a counter. After all submissions are done, the voting phase will begin and voters will pick what they find to be the best check and counter to the set.

Research Week - run by BigFatMantis and KSt3ve
In this project, participants research suggested Pokemon every week and share their experience. The suggested Pokemon will almost always be underexplored sets or Pokemon in the metagame, in order to help people broaden their palates! Whoever has the highest ladder score at the end of the week will be declared the winner.

Teambuilding Competition v2 - run by Twilight
This will be weekly competition which you can join at any time. Each week, there will be a core, set, theme, or Pokemon posted, and then you will post an importable of a team featuring the given concept! This should look like a condensed RMT; a post will require an import and (brief) description of the teambuilding process to count. After a five days, the submissions will close and then you can cast your vote for the best team. The winner of the week will then get put into the hall of fame with their team on display for anyone to see!

Next Best Thing - run by Bandkrook
This project tasks the most creative of participants with finding underexplored sets for familiar Pokemon, in order to let them function in a new and useful manner. This project is meant to encourage exploration of a Pokemon in the UU Metagame. With this in mind, not every set will become a metagame staple, and that's ok! We're here to discover what each Pokemon can do, so no matter the purpose of the set you make, your contribution is valuable. We're doing this both for research and for fun, so don't be afraid to give it a shot!

What're Their Lasts? - run by Estarossa and avarice
Back in generations 1-4, team preview did not exist, and as such it was vital to be able to discern what the opponents remaining Pokemon were. Even though we are now blessed with team preview, the ability to work out which Pokemon would be the best choice for the last teamslot(s) is a vital question during the teambuilding process. In this project, every week the hosts will post a team that a player has built, but with two of the Pokemon missing. It is your goal to suggest which Pokemon would fit best in these slots. There will be two stages each week, a nominations stage, where you will be able to submit your suggestion, and a voting phase. The person who recieves the most votes will win the week, and be added to our hall of fame, along with their submission!

There may be other lesser known tournaments / mini-projects not on this list that are running on our subforum.

If you have a question about any particular project contact the Original Poster / Project head.

If you have any questions about becoming a Project head for a new project contact Indigo Plateau , Lilburr, Hilomilo, TSR, Adaam and Estarossa!
