The image of his past. Hodaka would rather not look at it, but it's important to remember your past. Remember your past, learn your mistakes, make a better future.
Used to like react to 90% of all posts. He's not around to do that nowadays though.

Note: when making subs, you should always remember to sub for the situation. This is only a general guideline, and are not the only things you should sub for.
- Bide
- Counter, Mirror Coat, Metal Burst*
- Torment
- Encore
- Disable
- Imprison
- Pain Split
Situational:
- Substitute
- Taunt
- Endure
- Skill Swap
*Note: even if you don't want to waste two subs on two moves with similar effects it's generally a good call to still have one sub to cover one move if you have the subs to spare.

Hodaka compiled this from his time here. He doesn't refer to his notes, but beginners are free to use them!
COMBOS
- keep into account combo and consecutive move costs
- combos have negative priority, unless combined priority is +1 in which case it doubles the priority, capping out at +6.
- moves have combo classes, be sure to check them
- and combo types
- again, specify move or type, as well as say it is damaging, for combinations.
SUBSTITUTIONS
- ‘non-damaging move’ is an invalid substitute clause
- ‘OR’ in substitutions count as two substitutions
- ‘Damaging [type] move’ is a perfectly legal clause
- ‘AND you are faster’ is also perfectly legal
- ‘AND you are faster by Speed Clause’ is also legal
- meanwhile else is not legal, this ain’t coding (sadly)
- ‘DAMAGING [type] move’ please, otherwise it’s illegal
- ‘weather-causing move’ is not a legal clause
- however, ‘IF weather is Sunny/Rainy etc.’ is a valid clause.
- take note of priority, don’t try and dig a combination
- don’t try to Dig Earthquake
-Chance ATTACK clauses are checked at the start of the round (a bit like priority +1[infinite zeros])
- CHANCE clauses are checked at the start of your action
- a mixture of both is checked at the start of your action
- both are ignored if you specify a timing
- a sub cannot resolve unless all clauses return true
MOVES
- some moves can have two or more variations, be sure to say which one you are using!
- a lot of moves (e.g. Dragon Rage and Torment) are different from the main games, so be sure you know what they do!
- Endure can’t be used back-to-back, so don’t try it
- Double Team is basically evasiveness, except that it becomes useless against spread moves and always hit moves.
- Imprison only works on moves you already know.
- it also requires exactly 3 moves to imprison
- Torment also prevents usage of same-move combinations
- Pain Split has a dynamic energy cost
- Metal Burst only works if you moved after the opponent (it ain’t negative priority)
- Moves with perfect accuracy like Magical Leaf cannot penetrate the evasive stage of D/E moves like Dig
- Endure makes you sluggish after you have used it
ABILITIES
- seriously gotta tell myself to Use Multiscale properly. I ought to bring Dragonite to some battles and try
- Regenerator exists
- Trace exists, so please remember to specify what to trace at he start of the round
- No Guard breaks all laws by allowing you to hit mons in the evasive stage of D/E moves.
FIELD
- Psychic Terrain prevents priority
- Take note of weather, they can affect the entire battle (autocorrect wanted it to be Weathering [with You], yes please take note of that XD)
FORMATS
- teaming up to take down one mon is the way to go in Doubles and Triples, unless you have spread moves!
OTHER
- you cannot edit after the opponent has ordered, don’t be a jerk and do that
- switch phases can only be started if you are ordering first. Meanwhile, if you used U-Turn, Volt Switch, or Flip Turn (etc.), you Switch at the start of your order (you need to order first)
- you also need to order first if you used a phasing move
-TMan87 loves ordering second on a critical round, see if you can abuse that “If I feel like I can lock down an opponent's options ordering first (against either weakened foes or ones with a limited movepool), I'm going for that. I will agree, though, that if you can pressure your opponent into having to cover their bases in a critical round, only for you to exploit something that wasn't covered by the subs, you have the upper hand.” ~TMan87 (I cant easily summarize this) basically abuse ordering if the round is critical. Unfortunately I’ll have a hard time figuring out when a round turns critical...
- you have limited recoveries
- remember your type charts!
In summary:
When making subs, check opponent moves, field effects, and abilities on both sides. If necessary, look up move effects and do damage calculations.
